I have been in the same boat as everyone else here with the data connection dropping off and sometimes toggling the data connection on/off works and sometimes it does not, even restarting will not always fix it. Here's what I did over 24hrs ago and I haven't lost my connection yet (knock on wood). It is simple and maybe I just got lucky but I hope it helps someone else, so here is what I did.
Took out my battery for 60 seconds, replaced the battery and restarted phone. Once loaded, I turned on wifi and connected to my home network. I then used the activate button. After the phone restarted after the activation, I turned off wifi and checked my 3G connectivity and it worked fine and has been working fine ever since. Now grant it this may be temporary but of course I'm hoping it is not. Good luck.
