Help Worried about possible overcharging / Help!

Hi there guys,

Here's the deal. I use Skype on my Samsung Galaxy S3 overnight and leave my phone on the charge all night as i skype through the night.

I'm worried that leaving it on charge all night might do harm to the battery and in effect reduce my battery life.
Its a brand new phone (got it yesterday) so i dont want to mess it up.

Any advice would be much appreciated. In other words, if you're reading this then you should leave a reply with what you think.

Thanks
Asim

I have had my S3 for quite some time now and i have left mine on charge over night ever since i got it and there is no harm to my battery you dont have to worry about leaving it on charge over night

This has been discussed around here a couple of times and i no other people are going to post agreeing with me

Anytime the phone says to put the phone on the charger it warns you not to use apps while it's charging. I also noticed that the red light (to show it's charging) doesn't come on until the phone screen is off. I wouldn't charge it while using it, but maybe others that know more than me will chime in with a different opinion.

The led red light is a notification for when the screen is off to let you no its charging not only that i have never ever seen where it warns you not to use apps well its charging

Thanks alot :D

Just the answer i was looking for and was really quick aswell, i thought i would need to wait until tomorrow for a response

No, don't worry. I leave it on charge overnight everyday, there's no problem in doing so. When you charge the phone, it's suggested not to use the phone just because by playing with it, the amount of power that goes to the battery is less as it's shared to power the phone as well, so it would take longer to finish charging.

I'm not sure why you're replying to me. I said the same thing about the red light being on when the screen is off to show it's charging. Also, just because you've never seen it yourself, doesn't mean I haven't. It comes up every time I have drained my battery, which I have had to do several times over the past week on my new extended battery. I'll post a pic next time it happens.

Well i have had my s3 since launch and not seen it once i would like to see the screen of it just for future reference and i replying to you because you said the red light doesnt come up until the screen is off which that is whats its supposed to do i misread it so ye

Ok...I have issues trying to explain myself sometimes. I'll post a shot of it when it happens again. I've still used it while charging and never had a problem but maybe other people don't want to take a chance which is why I mentioned. Probably should have added the part about me never having an issue doing it. Sorry, like I said, I have a ridiculous time trying to explain anything :o.

I also charge mine overnight every time it needs charging. I'm not getting up at 3am to unplug the phone ;).

You could use an older slower charger, say a 0.5A one, and it would take twice as long to reach a full charge, (S3 comes with a 1.0A charger, charging 1000 ma/ per hour, taking approx 2 hours 6 minutes to charge a 2100ma/h battery) and therefore stay at "full" for a shorter time, before you wake up and unplug it.

I have a 4200 mAh extended battery from Hyperion, it lasts 3-4 days. Does the bigger battery mean it takes longer to charge? I don't know since I just charge while sleeping.

Its simple math,

With the supplied 1Amp charger, your charging 1000 mah every hour, so it'll take 4 hours 12 minutes (ish)

With a slower charger, say 0.5 Amp, just double the time because your charger sends half the flow in the same hour (500mah not 1000mah) so it will take 8 hours 24 mins (ish) for a 4200mah battery.

Same as what id say to people worried about RAM use mate.. dont worry about it, honestly.
Being my only web browser, my phone is mostly plugged in while i use it but the battery is still great.
Just dont worry and enjoy the phone :)

Good grief. You do not need to do anything special or different. You can use the highest capacity charger you can find. You can leave it plugged in for 6 months straight. You can use the phone all you want while plugged in. You can use apps. You can remote control the world. You can do anything you want. It will charge fine. It will power the device fine. It will stop charging when it's done. It will only use as much power as it needs. Nothing will break. Nothing will melt. Anyone who tells you otherwise has no clue what they are talking about.

I just got my S3 and I've been wondering about this same exact topic. Thank you for confirming what I've already suspected.
