Help Worst Battery Ever

Newbie
i got the phone the day it came out and totally think it's a great phone. But by using the great functions, the battery wears out so fast. A couple Facebook checks, few photos, couples games of Scramble With Friends and it's dead. I'm talking 2-3 hours. I had the G1 and G2 which both had bad batteries too. Today it lasted about an hour while streaming video.

Is this normal for a smart phone or do htc android 4g phones just kill batteries? Thoughts, suggestions?

I get a good 5-6 hours with heavy use, and easily a full day with light-medium use. So I think the battery life is just fine.

The social network stuff and the zynga games tend to eat the battery up from my experience.

Ok, I will try to limit the use of those apps and see how it does. Thanks for the advice.

I found that when I updated the facebook app it would still work in the background when I wasn't using it, it was literally eating all the power, I un- installed the update and its been fine ever since.
If you go in to setting, power, then battery use, this will tell you what's using up the most power..

If you plan on heavy usage, you might consider adjusting the screen brightness to as low as possible. The screen uses the most battery.

If I am not streaming music or using other heavy bandwidth items, I'll turn off the WiFi and since I'm not one of those idiots who wear those stupid ear pieces (haha), I turn off blue tooth.

Anyone else have any thoughts to help optimize battery use?

It would have to be pure black, not just darker, because with amoled screens the pixel simply doesn't turn on when there's nothing to show, thus saving Battery. There are a few wallpapers on the market you can use to do this

On a normal day I am able to get 9 hours of usage while checking facebook, playing drawsomething, using pandora, and browsing 9gag and other forums. Have brightness set to low and running juce defendwe and also disabling other apps and background usage

I find it laughable that people complain about battery life.....

Show me a lap top thats battery lasts as long as one of these smart phones?????

Hey use your "Phone" as a phone only!!!, for one whole day, then tell me how long it lasts????? Plenty long Right??!!!!

Face it people... you have a full blown high powered processing device in the palm of your hand....with an HD screen, and full wireless Web access.... Hell the battery alone in most devices capable of this kind of power are bigger than the whole device. Oh and as an added bonus!!!
you can make phone calls!!!

So stop whining and enjoy the Awsome peace of technology you hold in the palm of your hand.....OH and keep a charger Handy....LOL
JMO.....

PS: I average 7-9 hours/charge depending on web surfing .... pretty damn good in my book!

I think I hear your phone ringing.

So my phone has been unplugged for 3 hours. I have only sent one text and was connected to WiFi for about 30 minutes. I am 85% battery left. Cell Stand-By and Phone Idle combine for about 30% usage. Why??

Mine has been unplugged for 14 hours and it is still on 73%

Wifi on while at work for 7 hours
Bluetooth on in the car for 3 hours
Data download at lunchtime - not on wifi
Few phone calls and a few texts

Run it with mobile internet off, but the phone turns it back on every hour for 3 minutes to sync and also when out of the house away from the charger, I have black wallpaper and the screen brightness at 40%

Using the same settings, my old Desire would have been on about 40% by now, so I am quite pleased with the battery

Try juice defender. Cuts the WiFi and data connections when the phone is in standby, and turns it on at regular intervals to check emails etc.

I get a full days charge - not as good as my old blackberry but better than my wife's iPhone!

My wife has this phone. The first day she thought the battery life was shocking, but she now gets 2 days use out of it.

This is wifi turned on all the time, checking facebook, playing draw something, & texting/ calling. To me this is fantastic battery.

It sounds like the OP has a duff battery, maybe he should take it back for a replacement?

I have had this phone for a week, and I can tell you it has the best battery life I have seen in smartphones (except for Razor Maxx). With normal use, phone calls, browsing, constant texting and youtube, I get an average of 15 hours daily.

Any tips on how you get this much battery life?

To be honest, I don't know how I get that much of battery life. When I purchased the phone the sales rep told me to expect about 17 hours from light to moderate use, so far she has been correct.

The one thing I will say I did was to use only black or dark backgrounds for my screens, that is including apps like whatsapp that will allow you to change the background to a darker one. I did this because I read somewhere that AMOLED screens will use less power if you use dark backgrounds.

If I find anything else I will be sure to post it here for everyone to see.

Thanks

I use Timeriffic on all of my Android devices. Killer app - allows you to set most options off or on by profiles.

Example: it's set to turn everything off at 2am and back on at 7am and later on weekends.

Really saves battery. Also, turn off all the auto-updating stuff.

AMOLED screens save battery when the colour is black. Black pixels are effectively turned off, so dark colour eg grey, will still use battery.

If you have a widget that refreshes, like weather, twitter, facebook, then these will use battery. Try to keeps widgets like these to a minimum & set their refresh times to as long as you can handle.

The biggest battery drain on phones is the screen. I have my S2 turned down quite low & my wife has her ONE S at 25%.

Timerrific looks interesting.

I have been finding the battery life to be one of the best features of this phone. I get 8 hours of heavy use. Turning the screen brightness down would probably help. If not, you must have a faulty battery.

I used to use Timeriffic and it is a good app, but I wanted something more versatile so I now use Tasker.

Away from the house, the phone switches to a pure black wallpaper, mobile internet is turned off, but Tasker turns it on every hour for three minutes and syncs everything, then turns it back off again and also it reduces the screen brightness to 30% while I am away from the house. It only checks for a BT connection every 5 minutes and connects to the car if it finds it. WiFi is off unless the BT has just disconnected, then it is only on for 5 minutes, to check for a connection.

I like to keep settings turned off until I want them on, rather than when the system or the app want them on, so as to save battery

I have now been disconnected from the charger for 9 hours, using the phone and I am still on 87%

If you want to make your battery last its pretty much the same on all android phones.

Turn off wifi when you aren't using it.
Set your email to sync less often.
Get a battery saver app.
I like auto starts to disable some apps from running after startup.
I like Facebook but that app is too obtrusive. I just use my browser.
Don't over clock if you want to save your battery.

After the first three charges you don't want to let it run all the way dead. That will hurt the life of your battery. It isn't a nicad battery that has a "memory"

Keep it away from heat or that will reduce the life.

Cnet did a review of this phone and played a video over and over on it. It lasted 9 hours, that's darn good.

I think that the phone has a really good battery life.

I use the phone to send lots of message, make 2-3 calls a day, check Facebook maybe 2-3 times a day, check the Sky Sports app a couple of times a day and play games whilst on the train to and from work. I only have to charge my phone every other night.

I had problems when I first got started because I had the settings for WiFi to be on constantly, I now have this set so it only connects when the phone is unlocked, saved me loads of battery life.
