Worth it?

It is nice that VM is coming out with a somewhat powerful Android phone. My question is- Will it be worth forking out the money for the Triumph on such an unreliable network? I find myself having to constantly restart my connection, and at times my phone, to get adequate 3g service (This is in Chicago). I appreciate in advance feedback to my theory. Thanks!

No regrets.

I've already rooted the thing. The speed and performance are impressive. As I've said before, comparable if not faster and more vibrant than my Droid X.

Then again, the OV I just got rid of was always too slow for my multitasking.

The test was Angry Birds. I'm still floored at the performace.

It's really up to you to decide.
Do you use your phone a lot?
If you do, then maybe you want to upgrade. If you don't use your phone a lot, then there's really no point in upgrading, right?

Optimus V? Many have problems with that on VMUSA and that particular phone.

To me the Triumph is WELL worth for the extra onboard storage alone. Everything else is just a bonus.

You can get it down to $269.99 by using that 10% coupon in the USPS moving kit. It's attached to the USPS form that's in there. i.e. not in the "loose" coupons. Plus if anyone has any deal you can get it pricematched... not sure how long BB pricematch is, but it was 14d @ office Depot and IIRC 30d @ Target... but I seem to recall 14d for BB..

If anyone has BB employee friends, I believe that with the employee discount the Triumph comes out to $208. Seems kinda crazy, but it's true.

From time to time, I use my Cricket Zio and rarely, I must use my VM phone. I have noticed a world of difference between VM and Cricket. With VM, I often have issues downloading mail, connecting to the web, etc.

I have never suffered any issues with Cricket. I can often connect where friends can't, it is very fast, it is easy to carry, and the screen is bigger. Sure, it is 55 a month compared to 25 with VM, but sometimes, the extra money is worth it. I am almost convinced to wait until Cricket releases a new phone because they are clearly superior in my experience.

I always seem to be willing to give VM a chance and in EVERY case, they have let me down. To be fair, their dumb phones work well when all you need to do is make a phone call.

my only complaint about the phone so far is battery life... hopefully some extended batteries come out soon

I posted this in another thread, but in case you missed it, this is the next big thing from Cricket:

Did you have the Optimus V before? How is the battery life compared to that?

Yes, still have it, and wife does as well. It's not as good as the Opt V, bottom line. It's also a smaller battery, though. Who knows why they chose to do that... ($$$$) With some tweaks and optimizations, I'm sure it can be improved where I could get 24 hours out of it, but nowhere near that yet.

Worst case would be just to buy a 2nd batt and keep the spare charged and ready to swap... the MT is just so much better in ALL(well I'm a bit suspicious of the GPS but haven't had time to compare in the field) ways than the OV that the batt runtime isn't even a consideration for me...

Are there batteries being sold separately already? Or will that happen later?

I'm pretty sure that they'll end up selling spare batteries. (Ever see a phone w/replaceable batt when they didn't?)

I didn't think to check at BB when I was there as I was hoping that batt runtime would be around what I could get out of the OV so I opted not to browse their accessories for the MT when offered. (Primarily because I know that buying accessories from a retail store like that will mean that they're marked up a few 1000%. e.g. a $3 HDMI cable for $25, etc.)

It's not better in ALL ways... but definitely in some. With some bugs worked out, I'll get over the battery. But battery life is very important to me in my situation, and it never ceases to amaze me why manufacturers put crappy batteries in these things - even the "higher end" phones. If I'm going to buy a 2nd battery, I'd rather pay more for the phone with a better battery in it out of the box.

While I didn't really gawk at the battery much it MIGHT even be a pseudo standard sized batt that maybe some other phones use... Kind of like the Nintendo DS batt is the same as a Nokia cell phone batt IIRC.

...and I still that that it's ALL better than the OV excepting MAYBE the GPS and antenna design(almost forgot about that :D). It's faster, the screen's better, has more storage, WiFi signal strength is better for me, has an upgraded GPU, SoC is fabbed on a smaller process, smoother, more responsive, more screen real estate(physical size AND pixels), etc. what's not to love? (Except for the batt for jnt, but really to get better batt life you're going to have to go feature phone or something... all smartphones have notoriously poor batt life, but like I mentioned if I can't get it setup to go at least 2d on my usage I'll just track down a spare batt or two and pop for a car charger which I've been meaning to do anyways...)

I was going to hold on to my Optimus V for a little while longer, but it seems people are very satisfied with this phone. From what I can tell, it seems that this phone doesn't have a locked bootloader. Is there a development group forming somewhere for this phone?

I'd more than willing to contribute to development on this phone. CM7 would be fantastic with the Triumph's specs. I have some questions before I go ahead and make the $300 plunge:

1) Build quality - I'm seeing some mixed reports. Does the phone feel solid or is it overly plastic-y? The OV has good construction to it, does the Triumph feel as good if not better?

2) Size - 4.1" is significantly larger than the OV. I've never had a phone with such a large screen. Does the Triumph still feel fairly portable?

3) Screen angles/brightness - How are the view angles on the Triumph? Does the screen washout in the sun?

4) Call quality - Not so much the network (I already have VM), I'm curious about the actual sound quality coming through the ear piece. Do people have trouble understanding you during calls? Do you have any trouble understanding the person on the other end?

Thanks for any responses in advance. I'm curious of Motorola's policy on releasing source code. For those who used my CM7 port on Ascend, you know that I have experience developing, but admittedly, the Triumph is new territory for me. (It's a much different phone). In any case, I'm hoping to make the Triumph my next phone.

1. It's a totally different animal. Not as hefty or substantial as the OV, but I am loving the width, screen size. I put a cheap case on it from BB, and now its too slippery - without case I think it's sleek, but with that nice textured feel of my old Moto Razor.
2. I think it's still very portable - a dude would have no problems putting this in his back pocket. It's 'bricky' enough to feel like you won't break it. I have been customizing apps, widgets on it for hours with almost not transition...other than smiling at the resolution, of course.
3. Will edit this tomorrow, as I only saw it in twilight - not as bright as the V, but then I rarely needed full brightness on the V - I tend to like a dimmer screen.
4. Call quality is the same, if not better, as far as I can tell. I will edit if I see contrary tomorrow with extended use. Signal DOES seem somewhat lower in my home - will have to track this and update the threads after enough time has lapsed.
Glad you'll be pitching in on devo, I'm sure it will be online shortly. I am not nearly smart enough to work on such things, but am surely willing to use the info you geniuses come up with. :)

Whoa, Isaac you're coming to the Triumph?! That would be great! You did great things with the Ascend, during my time with it, and I know you will do great things with this phone. I'm also looking into getting it as soon as I gather the money.

I got mine yesterday but unfortunately I will be exchanging my first triumph due to the camera not being able to focus other than that the phone runs great. The phone feels sturdy enough, runs smooth and due to the screens size web browsing is much easier. Overall rating 8/10

hopefully we get a good dev community

just noticed your edit - if you can get this phone on it's stock battery to last 2 days (of actual use!), I'll buy you a beer... or somethin'... ;)

my only complaint about the phone so far is battery life... hopefully some extended batteries come out soon

I charged mine to full yesterday at 8:00 AM and haven't plugged it in since.

I'm sitting right now with abot a 20% charge left. It's certainly on par with other smartphones with these specs.

People underestimate battery life when they first get a phone, because they are playing with it all the time, trying all the eatures, downloading apps, and basically putting the max stress on the battery as they can. Treating it like a normal phone, the battery seems on par with most other higher end smartphones.

In general it seems worth it, other than the lack of wifi tether, which I'm confident will be discovered, and the slow USB tethering speeds, but at this point I'm thinking that's a VM thing, not a phone thing.

I don't know if it is just my phone, but the sound quality is awful! I am coming from a HTC Hero and its just plain bad. I also can't use the speaker phone as the other person is getting a MASSIVE amount of feedback from the call (I suspect microphone and speaker placement is the issue). Speaker works fine otherwise. Microphone is bad as well, all the people I have talked to said I am muffled, they can't hear me clearly.

Anybody else have these problems? I hope its just my unit.

Thanks
