Root worth rooting?!?

I'm new here, coming from the Triumph and before that, the Optimus. I'm just wondering what the pros to rooting the Evo are. Does wifi tethering work on any ROMs and if so, does HDMI work with it as well? Just trying to see if it is worth the hassle as I'm not too savy on all the technical stuff. The Triumph and Optimus were easy considering I could use Gingerbreak for both. Any advice and information is appreciated

tend to answer these types of questions alot so to save some time, heres a quote from one of my older responses...
Welcome to the ALL THINGS ROOT section...
As you may have noticed, we are biased toward rooting...
but seriously... root away... customization is limitless with root permissions...

some of the roms include amazing things like:
-wifi tether
-beats audio
-better camera quality
-speedier data service
-a buttery smooth ui
-Google now
-and much, much, much, much, much, much, much more...

each rom is diff and the only way to know which one is the best is to try all of them... some people like htc sense... i dont... some people like pure google android (aosp)... i do ... some people like extreme customization (aokp)... its all depends on who you are and what you like... try them all...

if you have any trouble during the root process... there are tons of active and experienced users who are willing to help you with anything...

and to answer your specific questions...
hdmi - yes
wifi tether - yes
but not all roms are feature complete so they might not support one or both of those... just look through the rom descriptions

Thanks for the speedy responses and I will check out the threads. If you can point me in the direction of someone who can help with the process in case I make a mess of it, it's appreciated

but really just follow the steps in this guide... pretty easy to complete but if you have any questions, start a new thread (or just use this one) or pm me or another user...

I will probably give the phone a whirl without customizing at first but I'm so addicted to flashing ROMs that I'm sure it won't last long lol

rooting is a big waste of time.

Indeed. It inevitably leads to ROM-Hopping. Over and over...trying this ROM, that ROM...and before you know it, a month has passed. Then you decide to try Jellybean ROMs, and fix this bug, that bug...and another month goes by. Before you know it, you have your phone PERFECT...with the perfect kernel, perfect ROM, and all the settings and themes you like.

Then a week later...you buy a new phone and do it all over again. :p

lol exactly. I've only had my Triumph a couple of months but found I couldn't get things tweaked exactly how I wanted them so I decided to move on lol

Or you crack the screen on your triumph getting out of the car, and then the charger stops working a couple months after that, making the phone useless :P

Then it's time for a new phone.

thats funny, bc i find it annoying :D

That's the beauty of having options. I personally LOVE sweep to wake. I don't like using my power button, so I had switched to using the volume buttons to wake the phone. The problem with that is: 1. you can't sleep the phone with the volume, and 2. if you just want to adjust the volume while listening to music, you end up turning the screen on.

Sweep to Wake alone is worth it to me. I would have likely stayed with the Power Kernel on Mobster HD, but there is no sweep to wake baked in. I've been running Buttered Toast for several weeks now, and I really like it.

It depends on what you want to DO with your phone.

Are you totally satisfied with your phone as is?

If yes, then you don't need to root.

Do you want to test new ROMs? Kernels? Theme status bar? Flash random mods? Delete bloatware?

Rooting is for you then.

I didn't realize this until recently but if you sweep in reverse it will lock the phone and shut the screen off. Just thought I'd post in case you didn't realize that either.

Yea, the feature should really be called "sweep2sleep/wake". ;)

Yes, I'm all over that.

I had troubles using it at first as it would disable screen shots. After talking to Ramjet about it, I learned that the sweep motion just simulates the pressing of the power button. Sweep to wake normally disables the default screenshot of (vol - & pwr) as sweeping simulates power, and you end up on the HOME button at the end of the motion. This is interpreted by the phone as the command for a screenshot.

I discovered a work around though. During the aroma install for Buttered Toast, if you tell it NOT to use sweep to wake, then the screenshots aren't disabled by default. Luckily, even though I didn't enable S2W in the kernel install, Kernel Tuner can turn it on for you. By changing your end points, you can sweep to wake, sweep to sleep, and even take the standard screenshot.

Here's the thread where I hashed all this out:
