Root Wosrt case if I flash?

Girevik

Android Enthusiast
Right now I'm running 2.2 and am waiting on the stock 2.3 upgrade, but am considering a custom ROM. I'm wondering what is the potential worst case senario if I go for it.

Here's my concern. My phone is still under warranty, and I have rooted it. I had an issue not too long ago where the USB on my phone quit working, and needed to send it in for a replacement. My concern was that since it was rooted they would void my warranty, and I could not use Super OneClick to unroot becasue of the port being hosed. I was eventually able to unroot the phone without USB, but it was a pain.

All of that said, I'm worried that I will flash a ROM to my phone, and something unrelated then goes wroing with it and I'm not able to get it flashed back and therefore can't get it replaced. Are my fears justifed at all?

Definitely justified. If you were to flash a custom ROM and then your phone stopped working, they'd be able to tell that you weren't on stock software. Alternatively, I've heard they can also tell if you were to wipe it back to stock with Odin as well. Custom ROMs are definitely the way to go, but you are always taking a risk when using them. I've been doing it for about six months now, and I've never had one problem that a flash back to stock can't fix.

yeah as far as warranty goes, anyone knows that messing with the software of the phone will void your warranty, its mostly a given. but as far as "messing up" you phone, you shouldnt have to worry much. there a detailed step by step both text and video guides on how to do everything, should you not feel comfortable going in blind(which is not recommended, read up on everything first)

I'm not so much worried about messing up my phone myself as I am doing something to to it, then having an unrelated hardware issue and not being able to undo what I did so I could get a replacement.

As long as you can get to download mode you can ALWAYS flash back to stock with ODIN 1 click.

However if you make the jump to 2.3 with out the proper knowledge you CAN HARD BRICK your phone while updating the neccessary bootloaders.
Now you can always send it for JTAG repair but if you just follow the directions you wont have any problems.

Just make sure you have a good usb cable when installing the new bootloaders because you definetly dont want to have a disconnect during that process.

Also stay away from odin 3 button fix when trying to go back to stock from gingerbread because you will mix froyo and gingerbread bootloaders causing a HARD BRICK.

Always use odin 1 click when going back to stock.
