Root Would you believe a "Semi-Root" ???

Droid X, "rooted" via Pete's. Stable, fast, good battery life - overall, it's excellent. Root is confirmed by Root Check, Titanium, and other apps that require root access. HOWEVER:

Superuser 3.0.5 is installed, but does not appear on app list. Market says it's installed and lets me Open it, and I can see the Permissions - they're correct.

Droid X Bootstrapper IS installed, but is not accessible on the phone. The Market let's me Open it, and then I can do Bootstrap Recover (Success!) and Reboot Recovery - which freezes the phone and requires a battery pull (yes, debugging is ON).

Quickboot semi-works. I ask for "Recovery" and it reboots to the triangle and exclamation point. I press up/down volume and get an abbreviated menu with Boot Now, Update from card, and Wipe options -- no Nandroid option.

So... this is a stable semi-rooted Droid X but lacks the ability to do a Nandroid or get into the correct Recovery mode. What might be going on?

if your using DroidX bootstrapper on GB you have to uncheck "debugging"

Thanks - that helps! With Debugging OFF I was able to access the Recovery menu, but only via the Market (really). Now there's a nandroid backup.

It's still a half-assed root, with Superuser, Bootstrap, etc. invisible on the phone and accessible only via Market. But I have no plans to "improve" matters - this phone is simply too good as it is.

are you running stock Moto GB? If so when your looking at the app list are you sure your looking at "all apps" and not another tab of apps? you know how you can create diff app lists

also did you look for it under applications under settings and it isn't listed there either?

Yes - stock Moto ROM but with LauncherPro+, and I don't seem to have more than one app list. Or do I?

But you are CORRECT! Superuser appears in the apps listed via Settings - thanks.

Get ROM manager free and flash Droid X recovery through it... should clear up your recovery problem.

Thanks - done.
It's still flaky when it comes to rooty things, but in all other respects this Droid is solid. After a full day and a lot of time on the phone, I still have 81% of battery!

I've decided to leave it alone until it breaks.

FYI, I'm pretty sure the Quickboot "recovery" option would simply take you into stock recovery like you are seeing--so, it actually is functioning properly and like it would for most other phones.

Remember, the custom recovery solution (implementing ClockworkMod) is implemented by highjacking the logwrapper functionality--hence the need for the phone to reboot when invoking it.

Read about Koush's implementation details here: My Brain Hurts: Droid X Recovery (and Droid 2 too!)

Hope that helps a little.

Cheers!

Excellent! The bottom line is that this Droid X is stable, fast, flexible, has terrific battery life... and that some root-only apps are not visible.

I can live with that, and learning more would make my brain hurt.
