Wow! Really Apple!

Because of Apple's whining I've already lost my phone searching abilities after the software update. What make's them think they are the king of technology?

Sprint already had an OTA and ATT has announced an OTA - that dumbs down the Google search in order to avoid Apple's lawsuits.

I did the AT&T update lasy nite and I DID lose the search function you are talking about. Will it hurt to not do the update for people that don't want to lose this function?

What a bunch of clowns over at Apple. Until they have a monopoly, they won't be satisfied. The thing I love is that the media gives them a pass on anything & everything they do. They simply can do no wrong.

The media was all up & arms about the wages at Walmart, but it was perfectly fine for Apple store employees to get paid LESS than Walmart employees. Unreal.

Lmaooooo.... it's amazing! I mean I like Apple products, and even like the iPhone 4s just as much as any android phone.

But this is honestly going to far. It really looks like Apple is out of ideas and is just trying to BIG Brother Samsung because the little brother is getting bigger and stronger by the day.

I honestly feel like the iPhone 5 is not going to be anything special, and Apple knows it. If Apple were to go with a 4' screen or bigger, their screen resolution and battery life would suffer, and that is a harsh reality when your speaking about technology in 2012. So instead they decide to attack Samsung instead of figuring out what the next step for them is....Bad business Apple, very bad example your setting here.

I own a ton of Apple products and love them. I don't know if I will ever be able to buy another Windows pc again, because of my preference for osx. That said, every product I buy for myself (besides computers) will not be Apple produced.

Android tablets and phones have surpassed Apple's phones and tablets imo. The Apple TV is fine, but from now on I will be buying Samsung smart tv's and moving to their ecosystem, which started with my S3 and Tab 8.9. Apple are no longer the best in these areas.

Apple has lost my respect and now my money and quite frankly, my S3 is the best mobile device I have ever bought. Better than my iphones and ipads. And that is saying a lot.

Finally, I hope a law is passed on this in the US: http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/07/11/patents-congress-idUSL2E8I6EA620120711?feedType=RSS&feedName=rbssConsumerGoodsAndRetailNews
Since universal search has been around much longer than the iphone and should be considered essential, it would prevent banning any Samsung phone.

because of all this stuff apple is doing there is alot of talk of software patent reform going around. i wouldnt be surprised to see alot of changes coming in the near future. you know they have a patent for "sliding your finger to unlock the lockscreen." so dumb and why i refuse to own any apple products. what they are doing is counterproductive to innovation and its dumb

Their patent is very specific to slide your finger In a straight, designated path. This can very easily be avoided and I think what Samsung has done with the S3 is 100x better anyway. Slide to unlock is so outdated looking anyway.

Are these updates updating phones automatically? At&t/HTC hasn't sent that update to diable that feature for Google search on the One X (hoping they don't)

Mine didn't update automatically. I had read about it a couple of days ago. I checked for software updates on my phone and sure enough it started downloading it. Really wish now I didn't go looking for it.

Well, Steve Jobs said he was willing to go thermonuclear war with this and spend every penny of Apple's to fight Android. Obviously, these lawsuits are what he meant by that (what else could he do to spend all of Apple's money to go thermonuclear other than attempting to buy out Android?). So it's no big surprise.

Actually, Verizon really helped Android take off since they didn't have the iPhone for quite some time. (Remember, Verizon used to have some of the worst phone selections before Android, and Android really helped keep Verizon on top along with their superior network). Verizon also helped promote S3 sales by introducing their new, more expensive, plans right when the S3 pre-order was taking place. The only way to avoid losing the subsidy while keeping unlimited data was to order a phone prior to June 23rd. I'm surprised Apple isn't upset with Verizon as well (remember the Island of Misfit Toys commercial? While a slight on AT&T, it still featured the "iPhone" on Apple's choice of exclusivity). And don't forget "There's a Map for that" -- against ATT but from "There's an App for that" for the iPhone. People were *very* upset that their iPhones kept getting disconnected on AT&T in those days and Verizon took advantage of that with Android.

At some point, if Apple continues with the lawsuits, they'll generate more ill-will with the public and with customers than it's worth to win in court.

Agreed. Even Palm's WebOS had a different (and yet similar) way to unlock the screen without breaching the patent (as far as I know). It featured a small circle at the bottom of the screen that you simply dragged in any direction upwards -- not along a straight, designated path.

The Apple logo only has one bite out of it. Hmmm. No need to wonder why. It obviously leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Donnie Osmond was wrong. "One bad apple DOES spoil the whole bunch girl."

I think the so-called iPhone 5 will still have the die-hard apple followers. They will be oooed and aahed by a little bigger screen and a little faster processor and other "little" features. The ad campaign will make it out to be the greatest thing since an indoor toilet. But the fact is, like others have said, they are out of ideas. Samsung IMO are spot on with their ideas. And the fun thing about android phones are we get to make them our own. Apple believes they know what we want and what's best for us. I don't see it changing now.

I love my iPad... But I started looking at android tablets today, I'm not sending any more money to apple if this is the stupid crap they are going to do with it. I even convinced a friend of mine to get rid of his iPhone 4S and buy a Galaxy S3 today! ... Ok... Maybe it was my phone that convinced him to do that and not so much me, but I can take some of the credit can't I? Lol

I ordered mine June 27th and still have my unlimited data.

I like my ipad too but it was a work gift. I would never have spent that kind of money on one myself. The only tablets I'll by with my own money will be android based.

I hate the idea of functionality being taken out of competing phones because of patent issues, but you can't blame Apple for doing everything in its power. The have a responsibility to their shareholders to pursue this. Now I'd agree that reform is definitely needed, but let's be honest and recognize that a lot of what Samsung has done has been a direct copy of Apple. Everything from their version of the "smart cover" for tablets to a near duplication of the Apple retail store has been used by Samsung. That is not to say that don't have some original ideas of their own (they certainly do), but there's no denying they are directly emulating Apple's business model to great success. I'd also agree that Apple is having trouble keeping up, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't try to protect their patents to the best of their ability.

Let's keep a level-headed view of what's going on. The market will straighten itself out, and all of this competition is GOOD for Apple, Google, Samsung, and everyone on board. Let them duke it out, but let's also pursue some reform to get some of the nonsense addressed.

Trust me, you wouldn't want to see 100% domination by Android OR iOS. We don't WANT a winner here folks, we want as much competition as possible. Google pushes Apple as much as Apple pushes Google (and everyone else involved). Be careful what you wish for!

I think there can be competition without lawsuits. I would even go so far to say there would be BETTER competition without lawsuits. They should be competing with a better product instead of suing. I am much more interested in what the products have to offer, us as consumers, rather than who has the best lawyers.

In Apples next law suit? The iPhone 5 with a 4.00" screen, then a day later, the patent for a "4 inch multi touch interface device" will be granted, then the following day all android phones that have a 4.00" screen will be subject to a lawsuit over the screen size.

innovate, Apple, don't litigate!

While this is true, and the competition is good, keeping a level headed view, it's not just a case of samsung copying apple.

I agree that what ideas apple come up with themselves they have every right to protect.

But they are also copying features from android, as much as google are copying features from apple.

Apple have a way of marketing to make consumers think they have just implemented some great new never seen before amazing feature, when in reality that feature has been around a while in some form or other.

Imo, apple might have had a hit with the ipod and iphone, but all the other manufacturers have been inspired to build upon the basic principles and ideas, apple in this case just throws its teddy out the cot because they missed the potential of their own ideas and someone else bettered it.

If you look at who is truly being innovative in the market now, it's definitely not apple. Clearly playing catch up, they think law suits are the answer, they should invest in more market research instead to see what functions people of all ages and jobs want their phone to do.

Don't forget, apple years ago pretty much had the neich in mac PC's being used for graphics development, and they were little known for much else. Just because they had a hit mp3 player and phone they think they can wear big boy pants. Many other electronic's companies have had greater successes and failures and not made anywhere near the fuss apple makes.

Fight it out by all means, apple, Google, Samsung, HTC etc, just fight like gentlemen, not the spoilt little brats some of you are making yourselves look like.

Inspire and be inspired, rise above the bs.

I've been listening in on the technorati debates about this subject. The general consensus is that the patent system sucks because software patents are being granted willy nilly. The patent office is of the mindset to grant all patents and let the legal system figure out if they were worth granting. It shows incredible laziness on the behalf of the Feds (surprise surprise).

I had a fascination with Apple and iOS for about a year when the iPad came out in 2010. I loved the tablet device and went wild for iPod Touches and even a Nano, not to mention a couple hundred bucks I spent in the App Store. Then I got a cheapie Android phone the next year. It was an LG Optimus running only Froyo with limited memory and a slow processor, yet still I could do more with it than I could on my more expensive Apple toys.

This cheesy move on Apple's behalf inspired me to grab a Galaxy Nexus as soon as Google started reselling them in the Play Store and an S3 on my Sprint Family Plan.

It was pretty easy to start boycotting Apple since I pretty much stopped buying anything from them after the iPad 2. Android has gotten up to speed lightning fast. I own 2 Android tablets (a 7" Galaxy Tab and 10.1" Asus Transformer) and have the Nexus 7 on pre-order. All my favorite apps were ported to Android last year and now most new ones come out for Android first or simultaneously with iOS.

These legal wranglings are nothing more than the sour grapes of a company that sees its glory days ending. Now they are talking about debuting the iPhone 5 in August instead of the rumored October sale date. They know the most they can offer is a slightly larger screen (which equals Android 2010/2011 phones), retina display and LTE. That's not innovating; it's keeping pace with existing competitors.

Something good will come of it though. I predict we'll finally see an overhaul of the patent system.
