Wow your mates!

It can be a bit sad showing off your new phone, but nonetheless there are a couple of apps that my friends have seen and thought were pretty cool.

I want to know which apps have impressed people when you've shown them your new phone.

I'd say the two that have impressed people most are

Google Sky Map: Moving the phone around to name all the constellations can be good at night, but even in the day pointing at the ground and saying jupiter is just over there, behind the Earth, does have a certain WOW value.

Metal detector: I don't think this is a metal detector, I think it uses the inbuilt compass to detect ferromagnetic materials (iron, steel, cobalt, nickel, iron oxide). Still if you drag it over the buckle of your belt or near your keys it will almost certainly buzz

I also like

solo lite: which is a little acoustic guitar app. see if you can work out the song that goes with chords when played in the order the appear on the screen.

and

fxcamera: make andy warhol pictures of anybody/anything

Metal detector does use the compass to detect magnetic materials...which is what a metal detector does!

Crank up the sensitivity and it can find things across the room, so I would assume you could use it on the beach.

I think that metal detectors work in a slightly different way. I'm pretty sure that metal detectors can detect gold and this can't detect gold.

In order to detect all metals you need to induce an electric current (probably by having an alternating magnetic field) in the metal you're looking for which will produce a magnetic field. This magnetic field could be detected by the compass. As far as I'm aware the phone cannot produce a sufficient alternating magnetic field to induce a current and large enough magnitude to be detected by the inbuilt compass.

Maybe it's me but I have never bought a phone thinking "wow this will impress my friends." My phone impresses me and that's all that really matters - I did after all buy it for myself.

Yeah, I tried metal detector. Roughly two minutes later I uninstalled it. It started going crazy when I moved it over my dining room table. It's made of solid wood.

Nope, at least not in the center of the table. Oh, and it also went off when I moved it over my hand, arm, and legs. No rings, pins or any foreign metal objects in any of those either. LOL

Now that I think of it, the more I use my Hero the more I feel like it is an extension of my arm. So you might be right, I could be turning into an android. LOL

Most metal detectors work by measuring a phase shift between a sending and receiving antenna which is altered by the conductivity of the target. The higher the conductivity the greater the delay in the returning signal. Pretty cool technology nowdays.

Maybe it was sooooo sensitive that it picked up the Iron, and metals in you? We may be on to something. ... Find a way to use that, and turn our phones into some sort of xray cameras,,, or like ummm.... yeah... lol

I would say Google Skymap and any of the barcode scanning apps(Shopsavvy, Calorie Counter) tend to impress most people that see them. Also, the immediate voice search of google on my homescreen is impressive to some.

Actually not that often, I needed a new set of tires anyway and I figured it was a good time to finish them off.:) Plus we got some great pictures out of it .
