Help Xperia Z1 and no compass

Kardell

Lurker
Hi All,
I have a brand new Z1 from China.
I had Android 4 something. I have user USB cable and PC Companion to flash the latest system 5 something.
To be honest with you I have not tested compass on the previous system, but the device is not even detected in Service Menu.
In all the specs I have checked it is showing that the compass is included and sensor-wise it is not different from Motorola I have both were released roughly in the same time.
I come across a forum discussion where people say that they lost compass after upgrade from Android 4 to 5 possibly due to firmware issue.
https://github.com/cgeo/cgeo/issues/4921

I can see that gyroscope is working fine, but compass is like non existent.
I have noticed that first when I could not use my Google Navigation. I thought that it will work using GPS coordinates, but compass seems to be one of the essential components of this software and there is no backup engine.
Please advise what should I do next as this is weird. I have a Motorola Goto and this phone works flawlessly comparing to surprises I have with Xperia.
Thank you

Have you tried installing a compass app and seeing whether that works?

If you hadn't said you'd updated it via a computer I'd ask whether you are sure it's a real Xperia Z, as there are a lot of fake phones sold in China. But Sony software would not install on a fake phone, so if you used the Sony tools to update it it can't be a fake. However the Xperia has got a compass, so there's something wrong here.

Enter this code in the phone dialler: *#*#7378423#*#*

In the resulting diagnostic menu, select "Service Tests", scroll down to "Compass", and select that. If he compass is functional then the yaw/pich/roll readout at the top of the screen will change as the device is moved.

I can see a man having similar problem with Z3

My Z3 has been running Sony's v6.x Concept firmware for several months so I can't confirm that issue; I certainly didn't notice any problems with navigation/mapping apps on the previous 5.1.1 firmware.

The problem isn't present on my Z3+ (Android 5.0.2) either, fwiw.

I mean more and more I think this is some hardware fault and most likely this has to be returned.
There is very little about this issue on the web.
