xScope, a multitouch pinch zoom browser

I temporarily release a version last week but it was not stable. I don't have a G1 phone to actually test it yet. Also the graphics are not right.
1.6, yes. I am currently still focusing making the current version more stable and complete. We will get to there. Thanks.

Just grabbed the new update. I like the choices and changes you've made.

A couple thoughts about the auto-hide task bar feature making the taskbar disappear to the top of the content and require you to scroll up past the top of the page.

First, I think that's a super-cool idea to put controls off to one side of the content like we saw in that mobile FireFox video before. I like that you're playing with that idea--big plus.

Second, when I'm in the middle of a long page (ex a forum thread) and decide I want to navigate away, it's kind of cumbersome to have to scroll all the way to the top to get my url bar back or to open a new tab, etc.

And an unrelated suggestion, maybe long-pressing the home button can open the home screen in a new tab. Like Firefox for desktop does when you middle-click?
 
I have an idea... Maby themes for your browser? I dont like white... lol just personal preference. Because you are so responsive to us, I am going to go try it out now :) Keep it up!

Also, please add the original zoom in/out buttons at the bottom, like the default screen. Maby as an option in settings? Sometimes I like using that too. Make it like dolphin's where you can use both. Although dont make it too much like dolphin, because then it would be bad... haha

The second point you mentioned is indeed a problem. I am thinking a pulldown idea right now (just like the notification bar) as suggested by another user.
The long-pressing home button has its convention (showing up most recent apps). So I guess a popup here for options to 1. New Tab, 2. Go homepage, 3. Show Recent Apps?
From now on, I will stick to one simple principle: No more than two clicks for accessing functions anyway. Less is more.

Love the implementation of the address bar hiding! Some good suggestions above- like long pressing of the home button (the menu button may be a better option) to bring up the home screen. For me, there are a bunch of ways that you could go to get to the root of this issue- which is to get quick and easy access to my bookmarks. Having a 'bookmarks' option available when you click 'menu' is another one. Either way, I am plenty happy with everything at this point.

X: is it feasible to implement horizontal scrolling lock when scrolling up and down? It's the one thing that iPhone's Safari does that i'd love to see. It really makes navigating pages much, much simpler. My guess is it can't be done, but figured i'd ask.

One troubleshooting item for the forum: I previously had trouble logging into a site (Xmarks | Bookmark Sync and Search). I had to clear my cache and passwords and everything to get it to work. It seems like i entered the password wrong the first time, then each time i went back to the password box, i think that my new entry was just being tagged on to the end of my previous incorrect attempts (the length of the **** kept increasing). It didn't matter if i manually tried backspacing or deleting. Nothing worked until i cleared the cache and passwords.

Theme? Yes. I need to learn how to do it. I like it to be an addon kind of stuff so that other people can customize it.
I tried to add the zoom control long time ago(November?) and I couldn't make it work together with the multitouch. I was new to Android back then. But now I have learned so much, I will give it a fresh look later.

I've only used Xscope for a couple of days, but I have to appreciate one feature that hasn't been mentioned so far:

I read a lot of forums. So I browse the list of threads and enter the ones that are interesting (like this one). With Xscope, when I then hit the "Back" arrow to return to the forum list, it returns me right to the area of the thread I just read. As opposed to depositing me back to the very top of the web page, like Dolphin does.

I really like that it takes me right back to where I was. It was super-annoying surfing forums with Dolphin and having to scroll scroll scroll back down to the threads that I was browsing previously.

So for that alone, I really like Xscope.

Edit: apparently that only works in certain forums, but when I use Dolphin it doesn't work in any forums. So it seems to be a combo of the page and this browser. Whatever; I want it where I can have it!

Good to know, and thanks for the quick response!

I just caught wind that MyTouch might be updated to 2.1 sometime late spring, so worst-case scenario... it might STILL be quite awhile, but something to look forward to at least.
 
i have an issue with the browser that i need some help with. It may be in the settings and im just missing it, but when im using the browser and the phone rings i answer the call then when the call is over and the browser comes back up it always opens to the home screen not the screen where i left off. is there a way to have it go back to the same page as before the phone rang? Any help would be appreciated.

I just called myself from another phone and when the call was ended, the browser just came up and still showed what I left. Anyone can confirm this? Thanks

Thanks for your input. I have just implemented the 'pulling down' address bar part. Basically if a user swipes down from very top, the address bar is dragged down. I will finish several other tasks and then upload it.
About the horizontal scrolling, I do see its usefulness (I visited a forum that has its content in second table column). Are you talks about an scroll tab like the Phone App --> Contact where you can just grab it and drag up or down?

Search "Browser" or xscope. I could find it...

After around 4 hours of use today, Here is what I came up with.

Things to update/add

1. original zoom +/- buttons

2. Faster bookmark access

3. Themes

4. update the menu to make the buttons look a little better, atm they are a little pixled

5. Goes along with 4, new browser icon for the app menu

6. I notice that when I tried logging into this site, I couldnt see the letter I type like I can with the default browser (for instance if my password was Droid, and I were typing I would see **O if I was half way through)

Overall very nice. Just keep making it faster and faster and yours will take over dolphin. Keep up the good work :)

2. You just open a new tab and you have bookmarks?? How is that not as fast as any other browser on the market? One click.

The 'swipe down' address bar sounds like a great approach. Looking forward to trying it out.

As for my scrolling request: i'm not talking about adding one of those odd silver tabs that exists for the native contacts app. I'm talking about something a bit different. Hopefully I can explain:

Lets say you visit this site on your phone (i have a Droid). If i want to see the latest post, i'd scroll to the bottom right side of the overall page. Now, if i want to scroll back up for some reason, Safari on the iPhone is very smart about locking in just a y-axis scroll so that the screen doesn't drift left to right as i scroll up. Android browsers (including xScope) seem to have some tolerance built in, so it doesn't drift all crazy on the user, but it doesn't seem as 'locked in' as Safari. As i mentioned earlier, this may be beyond the scope (no pun intended) of what you can do legally or technically. Just an idea for you...

Now that you've implemented perfect swipe down for address bar....I might suggest that you include the tabs with that action as well.

Let the tabs be hidden when you scroll down, but when you swipe down to reveal the address bar, let the tabs be revealed as well!
 
So Mr. X, if I'm at the bottom of a long page (say a message board with 100 threads or a blog with 20 posts) and I want to open a new window or access the url bar, is there a better way to do it than scrolling up to the top of the page?
 
Mr. X have just uploaded an update so that if you are at the bottom (gosh! ), you simply swipe down from VERY TOP.

You mean auto hide tab?
Currently, if there is multiple tabs, you can't hide them. I will implement droiiiid's idea that starting a new tab by long press 'Home' icon.
