Root XTRrom 3.03 observation

JIT seems to introduce instability, for example, in Pandora.
I wonder if overclocking and no JIT is a faster, more stable solution.

Well, after reading the responses, I reinstalled SETcpu, set it to 528/245, Temp 40c 480/480, and Screen Off 480/245.

I also enabled JIT. My device seemed a little "jerky", and my NFL Mobile refused to load.

With JIT disabled, NFL is back, and device is smoother, but I swear, not as smooth as when SETcpu is removed completely.

While installed, and I wake the phone from sleep, it is unresponsive for a couple of seconds when I try to swipe between screens. This does not happen when removed.

I'm going to run it this way for the night, see what happens.

Question: can I flash 4.0 beta without messing with my SD card? It's not partitioned - it's stock - just the way it came from the box.

the dialer is kinda horrible if i mess up and need to delete, i end up pressing the 3 button. how can this be avoided?

JIT does not work well on all devices; I've seen the "jerky" reports about JIT once in a while.. it may be a good idea to disable it, along with de-installing SetCPU altogether for better performance, unless you're going to overclock.

That's the way I ran 2.1.1 and 3.0.3 early on, but it seems that JIT just adds another bit of snap, for me.

The only reason I have SetCPU running is for the sleep profile, as I keep the main setting at 528/528. Sleep is at 245/245.

I may be crazy but I think this rom runs faster withOUT setCPU installed. Took it off after reading some of Frisco's and others observations, and I think it runs smoother & faster with no OC and setCPU removed from phone. Battery seems soooooo much better without me mucking things up!!

Would be interested in other observations.

I'd advise no JIT and no SetCPU on xtrROMs in general, although the SetCPU running for overclocking on any ROM is one of those "ymmv" things. ;)

Again, I run SetCPU for a sleep profile and that's it, as the main setting is 528/528 (sorry about the repetition on this stuff).

JIT gets such mixed reviews from user to user that I've started a poll just to try to get an idea of how many found it "jerky" or not reliable or just not needed. To be honest, I disabled it this morning and made a call and ran the browser, etc and found no difference.. it may be a matter of perception in some devices with some ROMs (one of those :D).

Well, JIT is NG on my phone after two tries with this ROM, but I gotta say, rooting and this ROM have made me love this phone again.

Thanks, Frisco, for your well thought out reviews of the XtrRoms....this is the only ROM I've tried so far.....it's my default.

Can I flash the 4.0 beta without doing anything to my SD card? I DO NOT use apps2sd....want to wait until I get a bigger card.

Inquiring minds want to know...

Thanks for the nice words, mikey.

With regard to JIT, here is a note on zach's page about that:

"PLEASE NOTE jit has yet to be proven stable with all applications and can cause odd things on your phone."

..and also, further down:

"Pandora radio is not stable with JIT toggled on."

If you move up to another version of the same ROM, most often wiping is not necessary. However, please always read the notes and advice by the developer about that. In this 4 version zach says, "This is a FULL WIPE update."

As for me, I always wipe the three elements: "factory," dalvik and sd:ext, but that's just me because it is often just not a requirement. I do it because I have no problem redoing my settings, plus syncing takes care of contacts and calendar, and in addition to that, Market has the "downloads" history feature (that is very handy).

The only case wherein I've lost the Market "memory" of my downloaded apps is when I moved from one operating system to another, from 2.1 to 2.2 (xtrROM to Kaos).

I'm with Frisco on wiping all data before flashing a different ROM, even just an update of the same ROM. It just seems to ensure that things go smoother.
Before I do that though I make three different backups.
1) A Nand backup so that I can go back if I want to.
2) A full backup using Titanium Backup (I use the paid version which includes batch processing - meaning it's a one 'click' process to back up the entire phone. I don't THINK the unpaid version allows for that). The primary reason for the Titanium backup is because it remembers various settings in addition to backing up the apps. For instance I have two Yahoo email accounts set up in the Mail app. With TB I don't have to do the entire set up again, I can just restore the Mail data (at this point I'd choose data only), and just like magic my email accounts are back. :)
3) I use LauncherPro, it has on option to back up it's own settings. I do that so that I can restore those settings on the next ROM. That keeps me from having to spend a lot of time making Home look like it's supposed to.

I also have AppBrain on my phone, so I've got a sync of that up in the clouds, in the event that the Market doesn't remember what I've downloaded.

I know that sounds like lots of work, but each step only takes a couple of minutes, and I get the warm fuzzy feeling of knowing that I can easily reload apps and data, or go back to a previous state on my phone.

I understand about the wipes.....but I must not be explaining myself.
I initially chose this ROM after reading Frisco's review AND the fact that I did not have to partition my SD card for apps2SD. I guess I'm lazy, but for me, one step at a time!

I rooted and flashed xtrROM at midnight of August 2, and had a great phone by 12:25AM!! No muss, no fuss, fast, snappy and (holy smokes) the phone dialer is...normal!!!

I want to try 4.** of this ROM, so I am assuming I can just wipe, flash and not worry about partitioning for apps2SD, right?

DOn't mean to be a dunce, but....I guess I am!!:p

You're not being a dunce, you're being careful! :)

Correct, if you don't want apps2sd, then you don't need to partition the card.

Thanks......

Careful, yes.....took me a while to root, and only after a weekend where I needed to use my phone for a work crisis....and it was failing horribly!!

Now, with root, this phone is excellent for what I want.

You have to partition if you do want to use apps2SD, right?

Be sure to back up everything on that card prior to running through the partitioning procedure.

I think that needs a little more force behind it.
Your card WILL have ALL the data deleted when you partition it for a2sd.
Back it up, or lose it - those are your choices.

Thanks, but I know how to change the picture I just want the nexus one slide bar lock screen. :-)

Yes; this is what I did. Read the first post in this thread: [THEME] Vanilla Lockscreen NON-Transparent Background [UPDATED: 07/05/2010] - xda-developers

You'll need Metamorph installed to do this. Also, after reboot it will look like it has not worked, so you need another step for XTR. Install the app Root Explorer, and go to /system/app. From there, rename the file HtcLockScreen.apk to something else - HTCLockScreen.bak is fine - and then restart the phone. That should do it.

how can I get the stock keyboard the properly work?

I tried to flash it but it would never change back to the stock keyboard

can anyone help me with this?
