Root XtrSENSE vs stock 2.1

Thanks for all the help! Much appreciated. Couple of quick Q's:

1. Is Gscript difficult to use or is it a simple program?

2. I saw someone mention that before using apps2sd, he could only fit 7 apps on internal memory. Currently I can fit many more than that...does xtrSense take up more internal memory or something?

3. Is apps2sd difficult to setup or easy? And did you move all your apps over or just some? Do apps on the sd take longer to load (using stock SD card)?

4. I like knowing that I can do a Nand backup and always be able to go back to my current setup if needed. Can you just tell me the proper steps?

Would it be:

- root with universal 1 click method
- backup
- install xtrSense

Do I need to do a wipe someone in there? Any other missing steps?

Thanks

P.S. - What's Cache2sd?

Gscript is as easy to use as the toggle widgets that come with sense. You select what you want and it will restart the phone with that option running for you.

The Root with Dummies is great, especially since erisuser is there to hold your hand as he did for me when I had some bonehead hiccups.

Once you get through with rooting and flashing your ROM, basically, you'll go back into recovery and flash the various options (apps2SD, JIT, etc.). They'll show up in your flash listing (the same way your ROM shows up). In the case of xtrrom, you have to download the extra files and zip them to the root directory of your SD just like you did the ROM.

Basically they are "on/off" files. If you want to enable JIT, you flash the on file. If you want to turn it off, you flash the off. BIG WARNING THOUGH - if you flash apps2SD on, make sure you back up your SD card first because it's going to wipe it as it partitions the card.

See above post...

With the latest xtr roms you don't even have to flash the files. Gscript handles that for you. You press a button and the phone restarts with the option running. No need to even go to the recovery screen.

Well I rooted and installed XtrSense last night and love it! Thanks everyone for all the help and assistance, I really appreciate it. It's running very smooth.

Just a few Q's:

1. Since I'm using the official Twitter app, there's not really any need for Peep. Is there a way to uninstall it or should I just leave it?

2. Since I'm using apps2sd, is it safe to download and install a lot of apps, or do I run the risk of causing a slowdown? When I used a task killer in the past, I noticed some apps started on boot. Should I be worried about that at all, or is that less of an issue with apps2sd enabled?

3. I shouldn't use a task killer right? And whats this root program called appkiller? Is it good?

4. Now that I have root and a custom ROM, are there any recommended cool apps to get that I previously was unable to get?

Thanks!

Congrats and glad you like it.

1 - I would look at this thread to see what can be removed without causing trouble. http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/53646-unwanted-apps.html

2 - Task killers cause many of the slow down problems that you experience on the phone, so they are pretty worthless. The ram you are trying to free up isn't being used for anything anyway and the system will always try to allocate that ram to apps so that they load faster. The only reason they can be useful is if you have an app that is not performing/written properly. The "task killer" built in can be used for that anyway.

Ok, everyone that has heard this from me a million time can groan and roll your eyes now.

3 - See #2

4 - Do a search for "root" in the market. There are a bunch of apps specifically designed for rooted phones and many of them are quite useful. With a2sd, the biggest thing for me was that I didn't have to look at the app sizes anymore. :)

1. Since I'm using the official Twitter app, there's not really any need for Peep. Is there a way to uninstall it or should I just leave it?

If you are using the HTC widget, I think that you need to leave it. Otherwise, you can use the free market application Root Explorer to find the app install (sorry, I do not know where it is; perhaps somebody will have the exact location and name) and either delete it or (better) rename it from peep.apk (or whatever the name actually is) to peep.bak, so that you can change it back if it ends up causing a problem.

2. Since I'm using apps2sd, is it safe to download and install a lot of apps, or do I run the risk of causing a slowdown? When I used a task killer in the past, I noticed some apps started on boot. Should I be worried about that at all, or is that less of an issue with apps2sd enabled?

Go for it. I had a lot of apps installed on xtrROM, and still do on kaos froyo.

3. I shouldn't use a task killer right? And whats this root program called appkiller? Is it good?

Having a task killer installed, just in case you have an app that is running in the background and won't stop, is not such a bad thing. System Panel is a nice app for that - it lists a bunch of info about your system and the apps that are running, and you can kill recalcitrant apps. Just don't use one of those task killers that kills everything on a schedule or press of a widget - or, at least, I'd suggest you not.

Autokiller, I think you mean, changes the parameters that Android's built-in background task management uses to decide which apps to send to background, etc. It's probably unnecessary.

4. Now that I have root and a custom ROM, are there any recommended cool apps to get that I previously was unable to get?

Well, Root Explorer, Titanium Backup is good as well and worth the full price.

There was an update today:

4.0.6.1 [8/20/2010]
  • updated init.rc to use stock min free memory values and rely on new sysinit framework to change to custom settings
  • added teeter back upon request (use root explorer or adb to remove)
  • used the Launcher.apk from xtrROM for backup home launcher (has xtrROM wallpapers and thems if switch to it
    wink.gif
    )
  • add varialbe capture of new cpu values to log
  • updated the sysint framework for usersettings to move conf values to conf_off if not used or "toggled" off. Alows for clearned on/off
  • updated GScript set_cpu_stock.sh to use new sysint framework for usersetting values
  • changed ROM update-script to remove old GScript db so that old scripts are removed
  • small changes to the update-script to move progress bar approprately through install process
    4.0.6 Change Log
  • developed a new default cpu clock setting process to overclock the kernel at boot and allow the user to change the values. Only need separate app (and added overhead) if you want to go higher with cpu clock settings
  • added default overclock to 710400
  • added a set_cpu_stock.sh script to GScript for if you want to have stock cpu speed or use Market apps
  • added cpu_freq_report

Anyone try it yet? Do you notice much of a performance boost? How's the battery life?

And I'm no expert regarding SetCPU or OC but I noticed that there is a min and a max CPU setting. Does it automatically adjust? Did it previously adjust as well or only stay at the 528MHz?

And just waiting on some confirmations from people regarding no wipe install over 4.0.5

Thanks

So far running pretty well with a no wipe install. I haven't run it long enough yet to tell what the battery life is like.
