Yahoo mail

yeah if you think the yahoo mail app is great and fast, then you obviously haven't set up IMAP correctly. Yahoo mail doesn't just not work on my phone, but it doesn't work on many other ppl's phones as well. Just read the reviews on the app and you'll know what a POS it is. Yahoo has very bad Android programmers...

I really don't care what does, or does not work on other people's phones. If it works on mine, it works. If it doesn't, I delete it.

Same thing with reviews. I actually have a brain, and can decide for my self whether an app is useful for my purposes or not.

And since I don't know any of Yahoo's android programmers, I won't be so bold as to suggest that they are "very bad."

Well, let's clarify:

Yes... let's. ;)

The "it" in my "Unfortunately, it doesn't provide access to the folders I've set up to store mail..." was referring to K-9. I occasionally suffer from vague pronouns. On the bright side, I DO know the difference between your and you're (and their and there, and ...)

K-9 doesn't have specific functionallity I need. For example, moving emails to specific folders, or serching for a particular email. I use this feature quite a bit when I am off-site. I can spend weeks to a month without access to a computer with internet.

As for Yahoo... call me loyal. I've been with them with them from early on - mid 90s.

K-9 may not have advanced search features but I can definitely search for emails. I can't do it once I'm actually in the email account screen but from the main screen you can hit the menu key and search is right there.

As for accessing folders, from within the email account screen, I can again hit menu and then select 'Folder List' and all the folders I setup in Yahoo are there.

*Edit to add: You can indeed move emails to folders also. When viewing an email hit Menu > More > Move > then choose the folder.

I stand corrected. Thanks for the info. I reckon it helps to hit the Menu button on all the screens. Thanks!

I've been using the Yahoo Mail app and really like it. It seems that just today, though, I've stopped getting notified in my status bar when I get mail. I've turned audible notifications off, but I liked being able to see who I had mail from before deciding if I wanted to go check it. Any idea why it may be doing this? I've nto found a setting that seems to control how often it checks for mail.

And now that I've gotten home, I got all my notifications. Very strage. Any reason I wouldn't get them over 3G?

Even with perfect signal reception Yahoo mail client (1.3.0) gets stuck quite often in "checking for mail". The only way to fix this is to end the task and re-open. It then works well ....until the next time. Other mail apps (gmail, hotmail, xfinity/comcast) do not have this problem.
Is there a way to get rid of the problem (other than ending the task and re-opening)?
Note: problem happens in both 3G and wifi.

Yep same here... yahoo mail client is a total POS... on both of my Captivates. Using K-9 now and it's a much better mail client for yahoo. However, the Gmail app is the best for me.

I've found that removing it and reinstalling it helps for a bit, but not long. It's actually got me ready to switch to gmail.

Switching email is not enough because it's practically impossible to get EVERYBODY to start using your new email service. And (unlike other email services) yahoo mail does NOT allow forwarding unless you are a paying subscriber. So this problem needs to be fixed. Right now, I placed a shortcut next to the mail icon that allows me to terminate the app, which fixes the problem ...until the next time

I agree. I don't WANT to switch accounts....I've had my Yahoo account for years. Fortunately SBC Yahoo is my ISP, so I do have the option to foreward which makes things much easier if I do go that route.

One thing I have been doing lately is letting the Yahoo mail ap run to notify me when I get mail, but rather than actually using it to check mail I'll just get on the browser and use the Yahoo mobile mail site (which of course is littered with ads for thier mobile ap....I just had to laugh).

As for the problem being fixed, I wouldn't count on it happening any time soon. When I started asking these same things a whle back the responses I got were basically "yeah, it's been that way forever".

I've tried the Yahoo Mail app on my Captivate and Nexus One and it's a POS on both. If you can live without push e-mail, the fastest way to use Yahoo mail is via the Webapp. Otherwise, if you have an AT&T internet connection the K9 app works well, if not, you can only get the messages over 3G. Not good if you connect to wireless at home...

I installed Advanced Task Cleaner and I set it up to Auto Kill the Yahoo Mail app (if running) when the display is turned off (and obviously I am done reading/sending email). Result: no more endless "checking for mail".
Obviously this doesn't fix the problem but it masks it perfectly.

I'm not understanding the distinction with K9 bewteen 3G and wifi. I tried K9 and can't remember what my issue was. I THINK I got it set up correctly (I remember having issues), but IIRC since it's a pop client it would mark all my e-mail read on the server. I don't like my mail client messing with my "read" flags.

If you do this, though, do you still get notified of new messges in your task bar? Thats one of the things I really like about the mail client.

Right now I'm still debating whether I want to switch to Gmail (running a trial run on that now), or stick to using the yahoo client to notifiy me of new mail and just checking it via the browser.

It doesn't happen overnight, but it can happen. People change addresses all the time... most people are used to it. You just send out the word, then just check into the old account once a day to see who's still sending mail to you at it... then once a week... once a month... once every few months.

I haven't used my Yahoo email address as my primary in 8 years, but it's still working... and I hop in every few months just to double-check.

I recognize it's a painful thing to go through. It's like moving to a new mailing address. That's why when I switched email accounts I got my own domain on top of that, so I'd never have to go through the process again. That is why I also recommended that in-addition. For a few bucks a year, it's totally worth it. Think of it as "email address insurance", all for the cost of a couple cups of coffee or soda.

Just as a bit of additional information about this for those who may be interested. Google will register your domain and integrate the address into Gmail for you for like $8-9 a year. My wife had to do that for her business and absolutely loves it. She has her own domain name and personalized email address and she can check it through Gmail. Further combined with Android's integration with Gmail, and I can't recommend it enough.

That's not a bad deal and certainly convenient. However, it does defeat one of the purposes of my suggestion: freeing your domain from the same company providing you email.

If anything happens to the company with your email or your relationship with them, having the domain registrar separate makes it very easy to reroute your emails elsewhere.

No you set it up for IMAP so you don't have the issues that you have with POP e-mail. It stays in sync with your phone. The problem is that with IMAP, it won't work unless you are using an AT&T ISP or over 3G. If you have another ISP you use over wifi and you're connected to that wireless network, IMAP doesn't work anymore.
