Help Yellowish Hue On The Display

Wife and I have both have the HTC Incredible. Noticed yesterday her display has a yellowish hue to it while my is more of a bright white; display settings are identical. On hers where the screen would display a lot of white space, it also appears as if you can see a second layer of icons in the background, very hard to see though.

Anyone seen this type of issue? Anyway to fix it or is it a defect in the display?

Dunno, but I can think of two things that might or might not be relevant: 1) Some Incredibles (Amoled screen) are said to have a pinkish cast. There is also a SLCD version that might look different if they are compared side by side, and 2) There are reports that the Amoled screen can burn in over time if kept at high brightness.

Your ghost icons make me suspect the second possibility.

Thanks for the feedback. It doesn't appear to have a pinkish cast; more yellow. When on a screen that has alot of white space, there appears to be icons in background bleeding through there are only faintly visible.

As for the burn in over time, the Brightness setting has had Auto turned off, with a setting of about 85%. However, when not in use, after about 45 seconds when not in use, the display dims and goes into "idle" mode.

I'd consider 85% rather bright. I keep mine at 40% (less for reading at night). The people who reported burn-in were also presumably using the timeout since it can't be turned off entirely (unless you're plugged in and set it to stay awake). Haven't double checked that though.

If you have burn-in I would expect to see it mainly in areas that undergo little change, like the clock in the notification bar (I mean, I know it changes, but it's pretty intensively used within a small number of pixels), or some of the other notification bar icons. IIRC that's where other people reported it first.

So best to use the Auto Brightness setting?

This is not likely your culprit but I thought I might mention the problem anyway. I recall some forum messages describing the look of your wife's phone after the Froyo update. It seemed they were experiencing a dual layer of icons... each almost exactly over the other. It wasn't a concern of mine at the time so I don't remember the fix. As I said... it's not likely your problem but you might do a search to be certain.

Not sure if the yellowish color is due to a dual layers of icons and the icons are really hard to see.

I had the dual icon thing once while playing with ROMs and forgetting to do a full wipe. I could drag an icon to the trash and there would still be one there. :o The extra ones were not faint though, IIRC. Or at least not much dimmer than the primary ones.

Re: auto brightness, I stopped using it early on, but as I recall it seemed awfully bright on average compared to the 40% I use now.

On mine, the icons aren't even nearly visible, but you can see something is there.

Do they behave like icons, or like blank screen? I think that might be the acid test. i.e., can you press them or drag them and get something to happen? Or can you drop an icon or widget on top of them as if there were nothing there?

P.S. If your screen is burned in I should think you could make a strong case for replacement under the warranty. A screen really should not be doing that in this day and age, especially when used in the prescribed manner.

From the home screen, where there is the "Phone" icon, when I go into Google Voice for example, you can very faintly see the "Phone" icon in the background. Clicking on it does nothing.
