Help Yet Another Thread about a Battery Issue

TexasPriest

Newbie
Hi, I bought my phone in October of 2012. Since then I have loved the battery life but that changed one week ago here in late January of 2013. To start the day I normally unplug my about 8:30am. And I normally plug it back into the changer about midnight. Nine times out of ten the battery still has on 30%, or greater, charge. Very Good! But for the last week my battery is at 20%, or less, life by 5pm in the afternoon. NOT GOOD! I turned on power saver mode, uninstalled a bunch of apps and turned off everything not being used. Nothing worked so this past week end I reset the phone back to factory specs. I am currently running the phone with only that factory installed apps and T-Mo bloatware. There is a slight improvement in battery life but not much. Today at 5pm there is 25% battery life but I also have not used it as much as I normally do. Because I have a history of GREAT battery life this leads me to believe there is a phone problem or battery problem.

What do you guys think?

Up-date: I posted this message about 5pm and my battery life was at 25%. By 7pm my battery life was at 8% and in that time I sent two text messages and made a 2 min call.

Thank You

How's the coverage in your area? I read if the phone is trying to get a good cell signal that that can have an effect. Do you have data roaming off? Might help by turning that off in case you don't. Other than that I am not sure unless you updated to JB. I know people who updated to JB are having some battery issues.

Coverage is good here in North Dallas. Roaming is off and I up-date to JB a couple of months ago. My battery issue started one week ago. Thank You

Post us some battery stats screenshots after a normal days discharge if you can mate.
Even better, install Gsam battery monitor and screenshot the 1st page and the app page as well, of the same discharge.
Maybe we can find a pattern :)

Lol cool.
U should maybe get in habit of turning off 3g/4g when not usin it (or use something like Juice Defender but i think its best to just do it manualy)
Or if you have weak 4g, you can set the phone to only use 3g (hspa+) if thats stronger n itl save a LOT of power

My whole issue is that battery life was great a week ago and has been great since October. Now even after a factory reset and running in power saver mode, I have much poor battery life. I'm not willing to turn everything off just to make it through the day. Something happened, maybe the battery is damaged. I was just seeing if anyone else had this happen.

I havent heard of it in any forum mate (factory reset detramental to battery)
If the phones un-modded, id take advantage of the warranty tbh.
Good luck man

If a factory reset didn't help, it sounds like it could be a battery issue. I would buy a new battery and see what happens. If anything, you'll have a spare.

T-Mobile suckered me into updating to jelly bean. I had already had 2 unnamed "software updates" since I bought my phone back in September and both of them turned out to be minor updates which had nothing to do with jelly bean. So the 3rd time, I just nonchalantly pressed update because I was under the impression that the jelly bean update was only through Kies (I never intended to update anyway). Next thing I know, I have jelly bean.

Next thing I know after that, my already bad battery life has gotten even worse. Even the most basic usage like playing music drains the battery like crazy. System wake lock (media server) seems like to be the main culprit. I can take my phone off the charger at 8am, leave the house at 9, play music for one hour to school, sit idle for an 80 minute class at 10:30 with data off, and another hour of music back home (maybe checking Facebook or news apps), and my battery is at 60-65% by 1pm. It won't even make it to my 7pm class without a recharge, at that rate. And 2 hours screen time seems like the most I can get out of the whole battery. I can't even use my phone if I wanted to. I used to be able to at LEAST play music for an entire day on ICS if I didn't do anything else. Now on JB, music (which is what I primarily use my phone for) drains it just as fast as the browser does.

Also, how would I disable Google Now? I only know how to get to S-Voice.

Maybe it's something you recently installed, or a simple setting change? It may seem basic but did you check your battery consumption meter and trace it to a single application?
