Root Yet another thread about rooting.

Ok so ive spent literally months looking around all the rooting threads and guides and im getting more and more tempted to root.
I updated my desire to 2.3 so i need to use this guide:

http://androidforums.com/desire-all...ry-windows-published-4th-november-2011-a.html

is that right?
About the recovery, which one is better and whats the difference? Also i read yesterday that SUroot and rasta and people are using a different recovery. Is that one better?
Edit: 4ext recovery

Also im currently using Go Launcher and i like how ive got things setup with custom icons and themes and stuff. Do people use custom roms and go launcher? Would the status bar and settings menus just change with a different ROM? If i added a custom ROM would that wipe any data/sd card?

Once rooted do i have to install a custom ROM? Is it recommended? Would i get more benefits by doing it? I get the idea that it involves editing the partioning of the sd card and im not too sure on that process yet.

Also do i need a good sd card?
I have a sandisk micro sc hc card 16gb with 2 in the top right corner, meaning class 2? Is this a good sd card?
Edit: Ok so ive worked out this is the slowest sd card? Does this matter?
Lots of questions
Thanks if you can help

Yep

This is My favourite now and I am recommending it.

Also im currently using Go Launcher and i like how ive got things setup with custom icons and themes and stuff so if i root will it delete apps and contacts and all that?

Rooting itself wouldn't, no.

Do people use custom roms and go launcher?

People do all sorts of things. What are you getting at? Yes I use a custom ROM. yes I use go launcher

Would the status bar and settings menus just change with a different ROM?

Depends on the rom.

Once rooted do i have to install a custom ROM? Is it recommended?

Depends what you're rooting for?

Yes, you canbetter manage an increase in memory with custom ROMS. For some it involves partitioning SD cards. We have guides for this in our Rooting FAQs. You should read them, then ask furtehr questions on the things you dont understand.

Its fine for a2sd+. Not for data2sd.

So from the guide:

"2) Find out your PVT version:

a) Boot into HBoot (from off, hold vol-down and press power), make note of HBoot version. If PTV4, follow (b) to (d). If not, go to (e)
b) Download Terminal Emulator from the market and open it
c) Type "Cat/proc/mtd" and press enter. It will return results of either 20000 or 40000
d) If 40,000 - download Amon-Ra 2.0.1 Recovery (see below section (e)) and store it in a easy to find and access place on your PC (ie C:/ )
e) if 20000 or not ptv4, download your choice of recovery below, either will work.
Amon-Ra 2.0.1 or ClockWorkMod 2.5.0.7"

How would 4ext be replaced in this?
And i guess the 4ext download is somewhere on this forum?

So on a strictly visual basis what would be the most that a different ROM would change, given that you are using go launcher anyway.

Depends what you're rooting for?
Better battery, more space, better performance i guess?

Its fine for a2sd+. Not for data2sd.
Would you recommend i buy a faster sd card? I guess data2sd would free up considerably more space on my phone?

Thanks again

Guide / recovery:

Skip 2 and 3. Do 4, and 5. At 5 say yes to recovery. Skip 6, do 7.

Then download 4ext application and replace recovery using the app.

Appearance:
Status bar and notification can have different appearance and functionality..look at Rom threads for screen shots.

Custom Rom:
Yes you probably will want one. A2sd+ is best for newbies imho

By this you mean the market place app on my phone? and follow the steps on this app?

Also just realised i used the trick to force apps onto the sd card, do i need to undo this?

Final question before i go for it, sorry.

Im guessing i just do the reverse of what i did before

"5) In the black window:

Type "cd\android-sdk-windows\tools" and press enter (or platform-tools if you have adb in there)
Then Type "adb shell" and press enter
Then Type "pm setInstallLocation 2" and press enter"

Replacing the 2 for 1? Or am i totally wrong

No - press the touch tab. You will then see the touch versions of the recovery. The top one is the latest.

Choose the option to reboot into recovery after. Should be pretty obvious!

Either im being really stupid or not doing it right, i click install on the one you said. It downloads and installs, says flashing new recovery, then just says sucessful?

Edit: I found it in the menu of the app, was being stupid

Thanks

So at the moment im rooted with the 4ext recovery and ive got more questions:

Do i follow the partitioning guide before i install a custom ROM?
Can i use the partitioning guide and it will work without a custom ROM?

Just downloaded titanium backup, is the free version sufficient?
Also the app says it can move apps to the sd card, is this worth doing?

Edit: Just did nandroid backup from recovery menu, i just did the standard backup is that ok? I noticed an advanced backup option.

Im copying all the SD card contents onto my computer and i think the only nandroid backup files i can see are in a folder called "clockworkmod" is this normal?

Yes.
Yes and yes.

Yes, but paid is better.
No, you'll be using a2sd+. Unless Youve decided not. Do read the root memory faq.

Yes
Yes

"Make sure you have moved all SD Apps back to internal memory first. The "Move to SD" option will be redundant so you must undo this."

How am i meant to do this? Given that there is hardly any space on the internal memory?

Also on the guide it says i should be safe with EXT3 given that hardly any ROMs support EXT4, is this still the case?

Just take a titanium backup. It will be fine. When you move to a2sd+, then move everything back. Although you'll be doing a factory reset anyways

Ok ive hit my first problem, how do i mount as usb mass storage on 4EXT recovery?

And should i partition EXT3 or EXT4?

Also should the phone be in debugging mode for this?
