Copied from myself on different thread:

Not sure if this is possible but couldn't someone take the update and "simply" disable the script that locks the bootloader? You would get the update with full kernel and debugging but still have an open bootloader.
Also does a locked bootloader mean that we should not expect any more updates or future android versions?

Same here , and as far the "intuition" that thing moves like lighting . Its a nice phone , but no galaxy note 2 for sure.

But if you are looking for a bigger screen, multitasking , and more support the "intuition" is your phone.

I ran it flawlessly (excluding the bugs everyone has) for 6 days. I returned to stock last night though getting ready for the official update.

Yep now I'm also waiting for the update on full stock and I don't care to much if its locked cause we can still get root pretty easily and if I get root ill be fine, I can live without custom roms because the stock ics is already amazing as it is

And as someone mentioned yesterday, you can "freeze" most of the bloatware WITHOUT root using Disable feature of ICS.

The reason I will wait for our amazing devs to rip the official ICS apart is quite simple. I cannot live with the slow ass charging speed of the stock kernel.

This phone is useless if I can kill a battery while plugged in to a charger.

This will be a stupid question: Can you still get a root access (just root, no custom recovery, no non-stock ROMs) with a locked bootloader?

^ Here's your answer.

+1...I can't stand the slow charge rate of the stock kernel

I've been running tdm's CM9 and I do have to say that I'd rather stick to that with no data than have my bootloader locked. I can live without ICS until devs can get something rolling. I seriously respect those guys for everything they've done with this phone and I know that when ICS offically drops, PG, tdm, neph and all will have something cooking.

locked bootloader =
-hard root or no root
-No more custom kernelz
-custom roms will be difficult or ran off of stock kernel

BUT, it's a lot safer because there's always a stock recovery, so you rarely have the death brick that was so easy with this device before. Imo, there's positive to having a locked bootloader.... And since bootstrapping is common with Moto devices, I don't see why one can't be devised for this phone.

Yes. Motorola devices are all locked bootloaders and they're all rooted. Root access is different than access to alternative boot images, so you can have one without the other.

If a bootloader is locked, there are ways to 'strap' it, to basically bypass the boot image when desired.

So not to be that guy or anything but I looked more closely to the pdf that Verizon posted. First I noticed that the calendar icon was different and immediately realized that the icon shows the day of the week and the day of the month. I noticed that it said sun 1. I checked the calendar on my computer and saw that Jul 1 2012 was the first month where the first day fell on a Sunday. Then their picture of the data usage shows that it is for the period of Jul 1 - Jul 30. This proves that either LG or VZ have had this working since then. I did however notice there was no GPS icon.

EDIT: I guess the sunday July 1 2012 on the lock screen should have given it away as well..

Nah, that just means that's the date they created the document. For all we know, they made this doc off an older build, which is possible... I've seen tech docs made from beta products.

Don't read too much into that date.

Lol. Some of us already knew that anyway. most of us thought July would be the month it would be released because everything seemed to be indicating that it would come out then.

Weird... so even on V6, I can't get the LG tool to update my device, even though it says there's an update available:

No, I have v6 installed, load the tool and it says there's an update, but when I try to update, I get that error. It shouldn't say there's an update for my device if I can't take it.

Yes, provided you're on stock with ZERO system apps removed. If you're not on stock or if you removed system apps, the ota will fail.

If you have stock with all the system apps and take the ota, it will overwrite your boot image (cwm) and remove root access.

Neph/d2a/pg, please correct me if I'm wrong about cwm... That's how it's worked on other droids.

No, CWM will most likely block the update. It did with V6 and I don't suspect much will change with V7. It's possible that it may go thru now that the build.prop has been fixed, but I still doubt it. At least this time thou, you won't be stuck in CWM boot loop hell as long as your on CWM 6.0.1.1 (which you all should have upgraded to by now)

I haven't removed any apps but I did freeze a couple. but freezing an app isnt the same as removing it i assume. all it does it prevent that app from running right?
