Root z4root [Rooting in general]

I've been thinking about rooting my phone, but not sure if it's safe. If I use this program to do it, will it brick my phone? Another question: my phone updates the LG software automatically via WiFi and just gives me notifications that it's been updated. How do I prevent this after rooting? Thanks.
 
Okay so I have now rooted my phone and it works fine. Did the permanent one. How do I backup my phone (everything!!) before trying custom ROM's?
 
use titanium backup.. and also before installing a custom rom u need to install custom recovery.. once that is done i suggest u do a nandroid backup before proceeding towards a custom rom..
