Root ZTE U960 ROM Discussion

So I have tried to update with 02B06 as explained in this post: http://androidforums.com/4380734-post370.html

It looks like the update process finished at 83/100 and not 100/100. Got some dialog box in chinese, no clue what that meant. Then, rebooted... but now I am stuck:
- can't go into recovery anymore (Switch On + VolUp does not work).
- can't connect to it using adb: device is not listed. Hence, I can't reboot in recovery and either restore a backup, or install the root+gapps update provided.

The phone looks to work (although I used to have 3g on SIM2, now I always get E). So no root, no gapps, and not sure what's the status of the phone. Need to try some other things and find out how to root and reboot in recovery.

In the past, I used to get some freeze when switching on WiFi... now no more freeze, but I miss a lot of stuff :(

After updating to 2B06 in order to connect to the device using adb I had to dial the code *983*87274# and then select the first option.
After doing this I was able to see the device with "adb devices" and I was finally able to enter in the recovery with "abd reboot recovery".
For the 3g if I remember well I also get only 2g on the firt boot, but after the second reboot (or after installing the google app package) 3g come back.

Thanks, this made the trick and I can access the device using adb. Do I guess right saying using the *983*87274# is the same as using the SetMode tool for USB 'activation'? Anyway, I am now able to reboot, but still no recovery using "adb reboot recovery". If I leave the USB cable plugged, once rebooted I get the "MalShenzu" screen, but then no recovery tool started (just the battery charging icon). If I unplug USB just after adb reboots the device, nothing happens.

I suspect that the recovery was not installed properly with the OneClickUpdate tool although I replaced the RF.ZTE file with the one provided by The Solutor.

So I went ahead trying to install the recovery.img (the zip containing the reco.bat command file). But still no success. I run all adb commands manually and see that "adb shell su -c ...." returns "permission denied". So I am now stuck, trying to find out how to get su working to install the recovery properly. I thought that running it through adb would give a popup on the phone but nothing. I am sure I am close, just need to find out.

I have tried to run the OneClick update tool again, but the tool connects to the phone and display something about IMEI (rest is in chinese). I suspect I cannot update it again for some reason.

Finally, if I try to display the version, I get:
Software Version: ZTE-T U960CMCCV1.0.0B06/U960V1.0.2B06
U960SPV1.0.2B03/U960V1.0.2B06

No clue if this is correct or not (why a mix of 0B06, 2B06 and 2B03??)

Yes I think it's the same but in my case SetMode didn't work since the phone was not detected.

Yes probabilly something went wrong with the flashing process and now you dont' have the recovery installed.

Try to do an "adb remount" before the "adb shell"... If this not work it I think that it means that your phone is no rooted... and I don't know how to help you

Finally, if I try to display the version, I get:

It's the same version I see on my phone... so the ROM is installed correctly.

Thanks !

So that's what I suspected...something went wrong during the update process and I end up with no recovery...scary:(
"adb remount": remount failed: Operation not permitted

I'm doing some more research on various forums to see how to get su working there...

At least, I have still a working phone, just that it's not rooted, plenty of useless chinese apps and no google apps :(

Google for DooMLoRD_v1_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su that was mentioned by The Solutor in the first messages of this thread. I think it can be used to root also phone running ROM 2B06

Yes, I thought about that and a couple of others. Unfortunately, this exploit does not work anymore :(

So cannot remount as root to install su and superuser.apk properly.

At the moment, I am stuck without any possibility to at least root once to install the recovery properly.

Thanks for your help so far.

Are you shure you have all the drivers installed ?

Well, I guess so. I was able to start, all went smoothly until 83/100.

Did you try adb reboot recovery or quickboot from the market as suggested in the previous messages ?

"adb reboot recovery": I get the malshenzu screen, but then it's a black screen. No recovery screen.
quickboot: it's the chicken and egg problem... to use it, I must have root access :(

Not sure if that can help, but... in Android Settings/About Phone, there is a "System Updates" function. I have renamed one of the ROM as update.zip and requested to update. The phone reboot and goes into an install screen... obviously it fails due to signature verification failure. Not sure what I can re-install here to help.

I guess the only options I have are:
- find a way to root it.
- reinstall using OneClickUpdate tool properly this time. I just don't understand why the tool says something in chinese about IMEI without the possibility to click the button to update again...

I've found a way to make working phone wake-up via Volume- button, like was in previous FW.

I modified file Android.policy.jar from 2B06 ROM and put it into /system/framework folder.
So here's a Manual:
1) donwload file (link below)
http://narod.ru/disk/49725087001.a82c51895d55be818125b00f83b26d3b/android.policy.jar.html
2) copy the "android.policy.jar" file to /system. Open RootExplorer and find a file.
3) set the PERMISSIONS (long tap on a file):

4) MOVE the file to /system/framework/
5) REBOOT and.... done!
Device will take 1 or 2 minute booting at the first time!

Can you explain how sms w/o sender's number are managed with 2B06 ?
It seams to me that I've received an sms w/o sender's number on sim2 using the stock sms client... but unfortunally I've deleted the sms (It was spam :) ) and I'm not 100% sure that it really was without sender's number...
I don't know how to try to send me an sms without sender's number fo testing...

Edit: The stock sms client it's different from the one present on previous rom: it show a pop when receiving sms and this popup is not fully localized in english but it contains chinese characters...

Auto-reply....
I tested the stock client with sms without sender number and in my test sim1 can receive this kind of message but not sim2 :(

We still need to use handycent for sms notification and the stock client for sending message...

So after playing arround a bit with the new rom here is a feedback from my side:

PRO:
- phone works quite stable

- it looks that signal is more stable now. I get 3G on places I didn't get before

- bluetooth is working perfectly. Before there where problems with pairing with my car audio system. After pairing bluetooth app was crashing, starting again, pairing, crashing etc. So finally this seems to be solved and is something specific in baseband update. I tried the new firmware and old 2B03 baseband, immediately bluetooth was crashing again. So 2B06 improves bluetooth connections

CON:
SIM1 is still not working for all simcards. Here I have two o2 simcards (Germany) which are working in SIM2 only (and of course in any other phone I tested) but not in SIM1 (no RUIM card)

So still some development needed. But 2B06 is a step into the right direction. So I'm waiting for the next stage - maybe 2B07? ;-)

I haven't it

I found the links for the whole roms b07, b08 and b10 official roms.

They are on the (ugly for non registered users) 115.com.

You can download from there (easily but slowly) with jdownloader, or register to 115.com (google for tutorials in English)

Thanks a lot. I downloaded the B08 now but struggling into the next problem. I understood quite well now how to work with the oneclick-updater as I also know about the recovery-installation where I can install roms provided as zip-update. But the b08-rom is that typical point where I realize that I don't have a glue of what it's all about :s:

It's a 7z - Archive containing lots of bin-files as well as several mbn.files, boot.img, recovery.img and system.img.ext4.

How to install such kind of roms? Sorry to ask you such things as for you that should be the easy thing but for me this is like Chinese letters :D

I've checked for more. All the possible ways to root the phone don't work with this new version of Android 2.3.5. My only option is to hope of an updated OneClick update tool for a post 02B06 version and ensure this time the upgrade is done with the right recovery. I am really stuck with no more GooglePlay, and obviously no way to add a Google account. I think I am on edge too and not 3G anymore. WTF :(

EDIT: ROOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTEEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDDDDDD !!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah ! And I got back my recovery :)

ok, so not easy to do. I found another forum where Weimerd is and found something about *983*8421# which allows to run adb as root. But it took me a while to succeed. In reality, you need to ensure adb does not run on the PC. Unplug the USB, reboot the phone, and dial the above numbers. Then choose OK to run adbRoot. Now, you can use "adb" as root. Hence, I have used:
1) The zergRush method without running this tool to get busybox, su and Superuser.apk loaded on the phone. I ran all adb commands manually to ensure no problem. Then rebooted the phone and ... dadammmmmmmm... now can get superuser access.
2) Used the u960 recovery method to get back my recovery on the phone.
3) adb reboot recovery.... and now can get it back and restore my old 02B03.

I'll retry to install 02B06 with OneClick again.

How is the WIFI with it ? For some reasons, I cannot connect anymore to my access point. The phone reports my network as EAP but it's WPA2/PSK. I can enter the passkey but retrieval of the IP address timeouts. What looks strange is that I have now a software version including 02B06 in it (see my other post where I have been able to downgrade back to 2B03). So I have a mix of 2B03 and 2B06.

Also, do you confirm only chinese and english languages are available from 06 ?

thanks

The Spreadstrum baseband came in various flavors.

basically there are a lot of .bin files that can be packed in one. And looks like there are two different kinds of packaging

1# .pac meant to be installed by the research download program which is included in my fixed (and now outdated) baseband package.

2# A 10+ MB .bin file, meant to be flashed with the ZTE SWs: the one click updater we have just used, and the old SalesMultiDL_U960 (the one that killed my IMEI some days ago)

The option #2 requires to flash the whole phone (so you need all other files to start flashing) , while the option #1 can be used to flash just the spreadstrum (aka SIM1, aka TD ) baseband.

The problem is that research download doesn't like the bin packaged file.

but

research download will unpack the .pac file in its components when you choose the pac file and does it in your temp folder.

so

you have just to :

#A locate your temp folder and delete all file inside it (usually it is in C:\Documents and Settings\[actual-user]\local settings\Temp)

#B launch research download, open a .pac file you already have (say the b12.pac one)

#C you will see a newly created folder inside the temp one, inside it you will see the baseband spitted in its components ( SC8800G_sc8800g2_sp8803g_le_modem.bin, omadm_fota.bin, fdl1.bin, and so on...) so you can just overwrite them with the ones you downloaded and you want to try), then start the flashing process as usual.

Thats all, is way more difficult to explain than to do it. :)

So I have tried to update with 02B06 as explained in this post: http://androidforums.com/4380734-post370.html

It looks like the update process finished at 83/100 and not 100/100.

I've just had to reflash my phone from B06 to B06.

So I can add some suggestions.

Just launch the SW and connect the phone W/o the battery, you will see an (incomprensible) popup, close it.

Left the SW opened and reconnect the phone, the second time you will be able to start the upgrade process.

If the process hangs at 83 or 89 % just disconnect the phone and connect it a third time. In short do it until you will reach the 100%

Now that I've been able to root 2B06 directly and restore, I'll retry a 2B06 flash.

1) is the Wifi working properly ? I get a strange behavior since the bad 2B06 flash where WPA2 network is seen as EAP network.
2) is b06 only available in english and chinese ?

thanks !

Is just a wrong translation, was already present in the etotalk roms using a language different than english)

You can use
setting.apk and framework-res.apk taken from catty's release, personally I don't recommend them, they work but I had some phone crashes using them
translating the newer version is easy, but is a boring process.

framework-res.apk has more than 800 lines to translate, 800 lines per language, it's an huge work.
