It all depends on how long the phone has been sitting on the store shelf before you bought it. At my local MetroPCS corporate store the zmax is on backorder and any zmax you get from there will probably have the update that blocks root. If you find a franchise store that has them in stock however you can probably get one that has not been updated and is still rootable. I went to one of the privately owned franchise stores and told them I wanted a zmax but I would not buy it without first checking the build number in about phone section of the system settings.
