Help Investigate surge in data usage?

Hello,

I have a 5GB monthly Internet data plan with my cellphone network provider. I never use it all: January 1608MB, February 760MB, March 750MB, April 3615MB, May 800MB.

But we're only half of June, and I just got a text message warning that I'm over 4GB 😒

In Settings, it says that 3,47GB were downloaded in the Backround.

FWIW, I use USB Tethering daily to sync a personal information manager between the phone and Windows, and always connect to my modem's wifi hotspot at home before downloading updates from Google Play.

Is there a way to investigate if there's a rogue/virus app lurking?

Thanks for any help.

Motorola About Data Saver

Hello, experts. I don't think it matters that the smartphone I use is a Motorola — my question is a general one. I use my phone as a router when I am on the computer (it's "tethered" to my phone). I found, recently, that though I did do some downloading recently, the amount of data used for this, and shown on my phone, was far in excess of what I would have thought. After all, when I used "proper" Internet Service providers, there was one provider that allowed only 5GB of downloading before extra charges were incurred and, in the two or three years that I was with them, it was only very occasionally (about twice, in total) when I had to pay for an extra allowance, so normally, my demand was about five GB. In those days, I did much more downloading than I need to do now.

So, to discover that (supposedly), I had used over five GB in ten days, using my phone as a router, came as a shock (also, I was quite sceptical).

It was then that I began to think about turning Data Saver on, on my phone, when I was not using the computer. This was yesterday.

So, my question is: does Data Saver save a great deal of data being used needlessly? I mean, if it is only background traffic that it prevents, that cannot be much, can it? If the answer to that is "No, it can't", I shall have aa need to constantly watch how much data has been used, at the end of every day. When I took out this contract (with 3UK), I thought that my allowance of 30 GB would be far, far in excess of my needs. It would seem that it is not, even though I can't understand why.

With thanks in hopes of a helpful reply (or two, or three).

Help Please Help: How to move SIM card from old phone to new phone?

Hi all,

These are the specs of my old phone and as you can see it uses a "Mini-SIM" Card

I need to buy a new phone and all of the new phones use a "Nano-SIM" card.

How can I take my old SIM card to the new phone without destroying the SIM card? Is it possible for the data on the old phone's SIM card to be kept intact?

I know e-SIM cards are available but that may not be an option for me. 😢 😢 😢

Thanks for any help!!!

Slow motion video problem

I accidentally took a few videos in slow motion on my Pixel 8 Pro. I can play them in normal speed by moving the sliders to one end but if I copy the videos to my PC they play in slo-mo which is not enjoyable since the PC video players I've tried can't alter the speed to normal like the built in one on the phone. Besides the action and sound being slow, the video is all blocky.
Is there some way I can alter the original video so that I can save it as if it were recorded in normal speed and so it plays on a PC in normal speed?

Stuck sd tray

The Moto G Play's SD card tray is stuck, and I mean tight. It almost seems glued in there. The phone was not working for a while, not even charging, and I wanted to get the SD out of it. I tried that weird paper clip thing. Then I got some distilled water on a clothy paper towel. After that it was sticky tape. I eventually used a little WD40. Now the phone is charging, up to 54% after hours and hours, with a new charge cord, but the tray is still stuck and the SD is not showing.

Samsung Samsung Galaxy with 2 sims and SD Card?

Is there a Samsung Galaxy with 2 sims and SD Card that's not too expensive?

I was really keen on the A25, then a eventually realised it has either 2 sims OR 1 sim and an SD card, but not all three options.
I have trouble following the specs clearly, as some say 'Nano', some say '2 sims one tray' but I can't work out in clear English what I want.

I'm in Thailand and the price of the A25 is about 6,500 Baht (about US$200 I think)
Is there a new-ish model with 2 sims & an SD card?

Accessing "Use password after restart"

On my Z Fold 4, when I initially start the phone, I could touch the power button (sensing my fingerprint) to get to where I could input my password and start the phone. On my Z Fold 5, even though it is set up similarly, it will not do this (I do have fingerprints set up). I have to swipe the screen to be able to get to input my password. Has the feature as described on the 4 been eliminated in the 5?

Weird change in my Galaxy S9 lock screen behavior

This bizarre: Today my S9 began not consistently asking me to enter my PIN to unlock the screen. I went through my lock screen settings and changed it to ask me to enter my PIN just five minutes after the screen shuts down, but...

It seems like the phone can be in my pocket for way longer than that, yet the phone still doesn't ask for my PIN.

Note I am not using any settings that would prevent the phone from locking when it senses it's near my body or close to a trusted device in my home.

Is there an app or a system app whose cache I need to delete?

Or some other setting I should be looking at?

Thank you!

Can't get Opera as default browser

Today, on my Samsung Z Fold 5, I can't get email links to open up with Opera, even though when I go go settings (phone settings/apps), all browsers say that Opera is the default browser. This seems to have happened after I added some accounts to Aqua Mail. For now, I got links to stop opening with Chrome by disabling Chrome, but I do not think this is the proper or desired way. Chrome was not disabled on my Z Fold 4 and links opened there Correctly. Possibly dome changes got made in Aqua Mail or in my Google account during the email account additions. Any ideas here??

Would you buy a refurbished S21 FE?

I bought a "renewed" one off Amazon for a dear friend when her phone died, and the first one they sent seemed to have a battery that was nearing the end of its life, so we exchanged it, and the replacement is working just fine.

I know the S21 FE is kinda old, but it's just such a darned good deal on Amazon right now; they're about $200 to $225 dollars for "renewed" ones.

Heck, a brand new, unopened one is under $380.

I'm seriously tempted to get one for myself, 'cause the app I use for my Dexcom G7 CGM will soon lose support for any Android version older than Android 12.

Regarding that Dexcom app, it requires me to give it permission to circumvent battery saving settings so it can constantly monitor my blood glucose in real time. So maybe I should spring for a brand new phone, and not a refurb, in order to maximize battery life?

I dunno. What's your opinion of the S21 FE? Would you buy one in 2024? That $200 to $225 price is pretty hard to resist.

Z Fold 4 failure

This morning when I started to use my Z Fold 4, it failed. I am using it right now, but in cripple mode. When I unfolded the phone (while the cover screen was active), the phone inner screen started to display, but the display and phone shut off. It took a while, but I eventually figured I could start and run the phone as long as I kept it folded. If you unfolded it, the screen flashed on, then off and the phone died. Buttons on the right side of the phone (when the phone is open) do not function. It appears that connectivity on the phone is an issue when the hinge is in certain positions. I am charging up a new Z Fold 5 right now.

Locked vs unlocked phones

I have a Samsung S10 that's been acting weird lately. One day it spontaneously rebooted without me physically touching it. Another time the phone awoke from sleep without me physically touching it. The phone, not me has deleted pictures. An app on the phone downloaded an app without my permission. Fortunately, I was able to uninstall the app.

I can't decide between getting a locked phone or an unlocked phone.

I have some questions.

I know that unlocked phones come without a SIM card because the phones can be used on any carrier. I'm on Verizon & I wish to stick with Verizon. So, the unlocked phone has to be activated by Verizon. After the unlocked phone is activated by Verizon, will it have Verizon WiFi or is that a separate process? I know that Google Fi is an option for the Pixel phones. I assume that it's an option for any Android phone, correct?

If I buy an unlocked phone activated by Verizon, will I be able to get it serviced at Verizon or will I need to get it serviced elsewhere because it isn't a Verizon-branded phone?

Of course, I can buy a Verizon-branded phone & I won't have any problems getting it serviced.

Still searching for the perfect gallery app.

#Piktures did move all my audio files and other photos to one big giant file. No go.

Google Gallery Go app, needs write permission to move any object to an album cover no go.

Other "Gallery apps" keep on either re-arranging everything and I am just tired of searching for a perfect one, that atones and stays in each album organizaiton without having one giant one that really messes up and want to put it in windows file explorer and click on them within a heartbeat. Any sugestions?
