Maps weather display

Who has the weather icon/display in Maps? I totally forgot it was supposed to be rolling out (since October) and don't have it on my Pixel 7 (Verizon). A friend just called to see what it was, why it just appeared and could it be hidden (no, it apparently can't be), he has a Nord N30 5g (T-Mobile). Not sure I really even want it because Maps is getting way too cluttered but what's up with the huge delay in updates? So, who has it and who doesn't?

Google drive settings

I hope that this forum is the correct one to post about this. I use a Motorola smartphone, and have Google Drive installed on it. On my Mac computer (which is an old one), I used to have Google Drive installed, until about two years ago, when my Mac could not support or use the update, because the new version was too far ahead of the computer's capabilities. So, I was compelled to uninstall it from my computer.

However (as I found when I opened Google Drive on my phone), my files remain stored in Google Drive. One file in particular, I wanted to download, but could not do so. Nor could it be opened online, so as to read it. When I looked at the settings for Google Drive app. on my phone, I saw a section that was headed: Allowed > Files and Media. When I clicked on the latter, I saw that the phone has permissions for Media only, not for Files. There is nowhere on my phone, that I can see, that would allow me to give permission to download or open Files (stored in Google Drive).

Can someone tell me what to do to restore full use of Google Drive? It would be a tremendous asset

if I could use its full powers, but at the moment, it is a lame duck.

With thanks in hopeful anticipation,
S.

Browsing Phone's Messages On PC?

Hi Folks:

I need to browse messages on my phone, Galaxy A14 5G, and copy text from those that interest me to a text file on my PC.

I want to get the messages on my PC which will make selecting those of interest easier.

I started by backing up my entire phone to the PC, something I try to do occasionally.

I've done a little reading, and apparently the messages are in an SQLite database file.

The directory with the backup contains a directory named MESSAGE. It's content is Message.smem, not an SQLite .db file.

So, anyway, that isn't working.

How do I copy the message SQLite database to my PC, or accomplish my task in another way?

Thanks
Larry

Cabin Fever

I hate the winter season and the cold weather it always brings. Being retired, I have few reasons to venture out. I start to feel like a caged animal. I have the forums, reading, and TV to fill the hours but I need to get out of the house. I look forward to any sort of excuse to leave the house. Grocery shopping is even a desirable chore these days.
Today, the wife and I are meeting another couple at my cabin for brews and BS. It will be a break in the monotonous days that seem endless this time of year.
Do you suffer from cabin fever? Do you have any clever relief suggestions?

Google Sending sms/mms from Mac via Google Messages failing.

Have used Mac since stone age. Android since 8-10 years. "Always" preferred pairing computer and mobile and sending sms/mms from the Mac via the Android. Always worked just fine until 6-8 (?) months ago when each and every sms/mms don't send. The connection between computer and phone seems OK since I get "failed" in the computer and the same in the phone. I have set the options in the phone NOT to send in this new fancy Google format, but as plain sms/mms. To no avail. This drives me bonkers, really. I'm running a business and often need to attach images from the computer to text messages. Now I first have to transfer the images from the Mac to my mobile and then send them.

Have spend umpteen hours/days/weeks trying to find a solution.

I'm usually a pretty laid back fellow and have always learned to adapt to new "techniques", but this idiocy has pushed me over the edge.

Can someone please help? Have I just been daft and missed out something obvious?

Oh, I use Macos 12.7.2 Monterey and Android 13 on a phone RealmeC35. Browsers used to connect to Google Messages - A simple, helpful text messaging app are Firefox and Chrome. All apps, system, etc, are updated.

Help Gboard - how to disable the handwriting option!

Gboard has just introduced a new, infuriating "feature" that allows users with a stylus (like Samsung's S Pen) to use handwriting to input text... and Gboard will translate the handwriting and put it in the text field.

Problem is, I type faster than I write: I use the S Pen exhaustively because I can tap, swipe and scroll with surgical precision my fingers don't have. And Gboard has apparently made the handwriting input the DEFAULT if I'm using the S Pen. I now have to select the keyboard EVERY TIME I tap into the text field or Gboard will assume I want to handwrite.

How in the HECK do I disable this crap?! If I can't disable it, I'll find another keyboard app.

UPDATE:

Apparently there is NO WAY to disable it. If I'm using my S Pen to type, Gboard will assume that I really, really want to handwrite. Every time I tap the S Pen in any text field, that kills the keyboard and starts handwriting mode. The only way to get the keyboard back is to tap the field with my finger. Guess what happens if I use the S Pen to move the cursor? Handwriting mode again! Gboard has so slowed my text entry to a crawl with extra work that I left a blistering review; sent them equally blistering feedback; and uninstalled it. As much as I don't like Samsung Keyboard (and I refuse to use Microsoft SwiftKey), there aren't many options for a quality, feature-rich English keyboard.

windows problem...

Yeah I have seem to replaced my p.w. at somewhere on a sticky note, although I just did updated my outlook password thinking I logged in with that, but apparently it is out of the question, so my problem is how can I get out of it? I already did a msconfig when I could see the desktop and disabled most of the programs that automatically took place instead of finding the problem though, so I am just wondering how too get out of "Forgot your password and do not see your account?" This list is only shows adminstrator's that have prviously signed into this p.c. and does not inlude standered users or domain accounts. Need to be signed in as an admin" in the BSOD...

In windows ten this does occur, very first time ever.

ROMs Errors trying to compile LineageOS 17.1 with updated clang (and other patches)

I'm trying to build LineageOS 17.1 for the Xperia XZ2 Compact. I have gotten it to successfully build stock, but now I'm onto optimizing it (mostly just applying patches from a XZ1 Compact repo). These patches are for the XZ1 Compact, which uses the Snapdragon 835, or the MSM8998. The XZ2 Compact uses a Snapdragon 845, or the SDM845. A few of these patches I run into errors when compiling. I'm mostly focusing on Clang since I know that would help with performance and battery. I'm not really sure what the other patches do.

Patch 1:
android_device_sony_lilac/patches/update-clang.patch at lineage-17.1 · Flamefire/android_device_sony_lilac

The error:

Extra context:
displays_str is not in the MSM8998 source. I'm not really sure what it does, but if I remove it, it continues to compile but runs into a different error later on. I also don't want to disable some core functionality related to the display, so I'd rather not remove it. There is updated and different code for the function in LineageOS 18.1 source, but replacing the old code with the new code only results in a different error relating to displays_str.

Error 2:

Extra context:
I have no idea what this means or how to fix it. It would probably be helpful if I captured a bit more in this screenshot, but I didn't. I would prefer to get more info once I get displays_str fixed instead of bypassing it again.

For these patches I will get into less detail, as I don't think it's needed, but if you need it, I can recompile with the patch to get a full error.

Patch 2:
android_device_sony_lilac/patches/fix-llvm-unwind-warning-and-findUnwindSections.patch at lineage-17.1 · Flamefire/android_device_sony_lilac

The compiling error was command not found and suggested replacing -Wno-bitwise-conditional-parentheses (On line 11 in the patch) with -Wno-bitwise-op-parentheses and it just worked. Not sure what it changes or even if that just invalidates the entire patch, but it worked.

Patch 3:
android_device_sony_lilac/patches/suppress-bool-operation-warning.patch at lineage-17.1 · Flamefire/android_device_sony_lilac

The compiling error was again command not found, but had no suggestion for replacing -Wno-bool-operation (On line 12 in the patch). Not sure what this does either. No fix for it (aside from not including) for now.

Patch 4:
android_device_sony_lilac/patches/update-abi-dumps.patch at lineage-17.1 · Flamefire/android_device_sony_lilac

This causes a bunch of errors but the compiler helped me and I was able to fix it with the four commands below.
$ANDROID_BUILD_TOP/development/vndk/tools/header-checker/utils/create_reference_dumps.py -l libhidlbase
$ANDROID_BUILD_TOP/development/vndk/tools/header-checker/utils/create_reference_dumps.py -l libhwbinder_noltopgo
$ANDROID_BUILD_TOP/development/vndk/tools/header-checker/utils/create_reference_dumps.py -l libstagefright_foundation
$ANDROID_BUILD_TOP/development/vndk/tools/header-checker/utils/create_reference_dumps.py -l libprotobuf-cpp-full
Again not sure if this just invalidates the patch, but it worked.

I would really appreciate some help with this. I don't really know what I'm doing when it comes to coding.

Emergency Backup Power

This was the fourth time in 50+ years living at this address that I experienced a lengthy power outage. Each time I vowed that I'd invest in some sort of backup and I'm still not prepared. Yesterday around 1PM we lost power. Our feed is overhead and with the ice and high winds a tree branch down the street brought the line down. There were towns without power so my ten home outage was not a priority. Power was restored at 7AM and the temp in my home only dropped into the low forties overnight. That wouldn't be a huge problem except for my parrot. I had an old LP heater in my work storage that I grabbed yesterday afternoon but I couldn't get it to light. I had no time to diagnose the problem. I borrowed a Mr Heater and kept the bird warm until I ran out of gas at 4AM. I was at Lowes for more LP and another heater at 6. My power was restored at 7. My 21 year old bird buddy's room dropped to 50°. I hope that the power outage and my impromptu alternative heat was sufficient and he doesn't catch cold. Fifty degrees is about the low limit for large parrots.

So much for my recent saga. I now have a backup heater and plan to repair the large heater I fetched from my work shed. I'd love to invest in a whole house generator. They are a serious investment with a crossover and all installed. Maybe just a small generator for some lights and to hotwire the furnace. I can get by without cooking inside or doing laundry. I can live without AC if I lose power in the summer. A few lights, heat, and power for the refrigerator and freezer is all I really need.

Do you have any backup plan or backup in place? Any suggestions of ideas to share?
