Help true frequency/severity of current droid problems?

My droid reboots itself about 4-5 times a day with relatively light use. I did a factory reset today to see if some app i had downloaded was causing the problem but it still happens. Since the factory reset about 6 hours ago its rebooted on its own 4 times twice in google maps, once while writing a text and most recently after dismissing an alarm i had set. seems that any app even the preloaded ones cause it to crash. I am gonna take it into verizon tomorrow and see if maybe they will give me another unit to try.

Take it back. That is not normal.

I for one have had no problems. I did see the guy checking multiple things before he gave it to me. They must of known about the issues and didn't want to hand out ones that didnt work fine. I went like an hour before they closed that Friday. As for call quality, some phones work better then others. My droid gets way better call quality then my LG dare did. No more "what did you say?" and "well talk later, i cant hear you". I had to put up with a year of that crap. No complaints from me. My suggesting is if you have an issue, go to verizon. They will fix it.

I've had some random reboots, but didn't think that was a major issue. But today:

First, yesterday was my first time using my new docking station. I received a call while it was plugged in, so I tried to hit the speaker button. The screen turned black as soon as my finger got close. I took it away, back to the call screen, put it back, black. I'm already POed I have to take my Body Glove case off to plug it in, now this?

Later on, I realize I can't access my apps. I can press on them, but they wouldn't open. Same w/ the app store. I tried to make a call, so I go to my contacts. I click on one and try to call. Nothing. After a minute, I get a forced close message.

Most recently, I see I have a missed call. The phone was on my hip, I don't know how I couldn't hear it. Whatever, I call the number back (my g/f). This time it goes through, but the dial tone is very high pitched. It goes to her voice mail and I can't understand her voice b/c it's all scratchy and staticy. When I get home I found out that I had called her twice, prompting her to call me. I have the pattern to unlock feature, don't know how it did it.

Needless to say, this is unacceptable. Will be going back tomorrow to get this mess straightened out.

Oh yeah, one more thing, when I took it out of the dock this morning, it wouldn't get out of the docking mode, w/o turning the screen on and off. But then it stayed in portrait mode (or is it landscape...horizontal, that'll work) and wouldn't go back w/o turning the phone on and off.

Also, in my notifications, there was a message that said it was loading new data. Couldn't get it to leave. Finally gone after a day or so, but still confusing.

Ok, one more, my Taskiller apps don't stay killed. They keep popping up! Not after a couple of minutes, while I'm still in the app! It's crazy. If I didn't know better, I'd say I DL a virus from one of the apps.

Some apps are given permission to launch themselves. Task killer will kill everything, but then several apps will open themselves. Tis is becuase the phone and messaging systems as well as other core functions are really just apps. I belive when in the appstore at the bottom of the app page you can deny certain privileges to apps.

Also, i think i know the problem with your first post. You have a body glove for you phone! Is your phone going scuba diving? A body glove could be extremely damaging to your phones ego.

KeyserSoze, you have an unusual amout of issues. Either you have a error between keyboard and user, or you need to get it replaced. Some of the functions aren't as intuitive as many would think and many people do the wrong things to get to places and then say its the phones problem when in reality they just don't know how to use it.

granted, I didnt read your entire post cause Im lazy
I'm lazy and didn't feel like coming into the computer room to reply but google mail on my google phone didint give me a link to the thread, just text... which also happens to be a total PITA to highlight in android. I must not know how to poke something with my finger... Like the text icon.... And a box that says type to compose....that doesn't work.... THAT is a software issue. I'm no programmer but I know enough about troubleshooting electronics to know that.

I guess I should have known better than to trust a verizon tech that said "oh yeah these are known issues that they are hoping to fix on 12-11". That way they totally don't have to give me a refund and let me out of my contract with no fees.

Maybe most people don't use their phone as hard as I do? I do 20-30 calls per day and up to 100 texts... I'd think that's not outlandish.

Reading the responses here I'd say my issues aren't unusual. At least mine doesn't reboot randomly.

The battery cover on my Droid falls off all the time when I'm pulling the phone out of my pocket. I usually don't even realize it until I hear something clanking on the floor... just waiting for the day when this happens in a bar and it gets lost for good -_-

I realized there was a problem when I received my first call and it terminated a few seconds into it. I gradually realized the problem was that when I held the droid to my face that buttons were being hit by my face, really inconvenient ones like End and Mute. After a bit of internet research I realized this was the "proximity sensor" problem, the phone is supposed to detect when the phone is approaching a face to disable those buttons and vice versa, pretty cool I imagine when it works.

I have to say my calls to Motorola were a big dissapointment, the guys I spoke with in my 3 calls seemed poorly trained and struggled with English. The first call ended with my instruction to try taking the battery out and putting it back in, that didn't work. My next call ended (all these calls I did on speaker phone so I wouldn't hang up on them by mistake) with their suggestion of trying a new battery they would mail me but I didn't have time to give them my information. It was then that I did the internet research, calling them back a 3rd time to say I didn't see why a battery was related to a proximity sensor problem, after putting me on hold multiple times the guy told me he'd send me a new one, fine I thought. He then asked, "is there anything else I can help you with today?" I said, well, you need my address right? Oh yes sir, sorry sir, what is that please? I gave him my street address and he gives me that "is there anything else I can help you with" question at which point I said he needed the rest of my address, he apologized and took the information -- left me feeling not at all confident I'm going to receive anything.

I guess I should have waited a month for these early glitches to get sorted out... Otherwise the droid seems cool.
Just return the phone to Verizon. Why go through all that trouble. Verizon would have just sent you a new phone and you could have shipped it right back.

That is odd that you don't get the link.
And im sorry to hear you cant use your fingers.

Droidood: go to verizon, they will give you one that fits.

quality problems:
random reboots - Sounds plausible
loose battery cover - I got replaced today for free!
app incompatibility - Thats up to the developers to support 2.0
unresponsive proximity sensor - I personally havent had an issue.

usability issues:
jerky homescreen transitions - THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED!
predictive text performance - I havent had an issue
no call/end buttons - This is a huge pain, but im sure you saw that when you bought the device
power button for screen wake - What about it? Works fine.
barebones music player interface - Thats Android for yah.
camera, in general - This plain ol SUCKS!
lack of ring tone customizations/profiles (wondering if this is just a case of rtfm) - LOL! So many apps for this man. Do a search.

quality problems: Haven't had any
random reboots None for me
loose battery cover Battery cover is quite tight. Actually took quite a while just to get the darn thing off
app incompatibility: All the apps I have downloaded were compatible. I have hard more time trying to find apps that were worth while in my opinion. This phone does quite a but that you really dont need that many apps.
unresponsive proximity sensor: Every once in a while if I take the phone away from my face too quick this may happen. I just put it back to me head and then remove and it takes care of the situation.

usability issues:
jerky homescreen transitions: Haven't had this issue
predictive text performance: I actually like this because I can speed up my typing. Coming from the Storm and Storm2 this keyboard is very different. I don't even use the physical keyboard I don't like it. But that is just me.
no call/end buttons; I could do without the call button. No end button does irritate me a little. But that is more because from habit I want to hit the keys at the bottom. It is more about me getting used to the change. Most of everything on this phone really is change management.
power button for screen wake: I changed the screen to 10 minutes before it turns off. and just have to get used to hitting the on/off switch and then unlock the phone. But I can tell you i like this because with the Storm and Storm2 i was always unknowingly unlocking my phone and pressing the screen in my pocket. I don't use a holster.
barebones music player interface: Works for me I am not sure what people expect this to do. Play music. Because it does for me. It is really easy to move music from the computer to the phone. Its the same thing as copy mp3s from the computer to a jump drive.
camera, in general: Camera is not the best but I am sure it will get better. It is a phone camera after all.
lack of ring tone customizations/profiles (wondering if this is just a case of rtfm): I dont see where there is a lack of ring tone. You can customize your ringtone. I never did profile on BB so I really don't miss it. I can add any ringtone that I want just like an MP3

I really think most of the problem are attributed to a few things. people not reading the manual that is has been posted and people really coming from dumb phone to a smart phone which is a real big change. The phone too me seems to do everything my BB Storm did and my friends iPhone the main difference is the way the task are accomplished.

random reboots (I had it twice in one day.)
loose battery cover (My droid battery cover is a very tight fit.)
unresponsive proximity sensor (No problem here)
no call/end buttons (I don't care had an iPhone.)
power button for screen wake (What's wrong with it?)
lack of ring tone customizations/profiles (I don't really care... Had the iPhone before and lived with it.)

You have a 30 day guarantee if you don't like it return the phone and get something else or go to another carrier. I returned the storm2 no questions asked. Just return it and call them and tell them you returned it. If you got a NE2 then just have the person reset your date back to when you purchased the phone

One of the first and coolest things I noticed was this proximity sensor thing. I was on a call and when I say goodbye I turned my phone to hit end call and the screen popped up from blackness. I initially thought it was the accelerometer but I guess not

same here. almost no issues. there is a bit of lag in the screen scrolling (in comparison to HTC Hero), but that's a software thing that'll (hopefully) get worked out. I did have 1 freeze where I was using the navigation and didn't turn it off and shut off the display and then the phone froze. Nothing else though. Dunno about everyone with all these issues

You got to think most of the people here are just coming to the forums to get some answers about a problem they are having.

Me, well my phone is working perfect, minus camera focus, and Visual Voice mail, which has to do with me being a former Alltel customer (so says verizon tech support).

Light sensor works awesome compared to my HTC Diamond, which would lag a bit and often would not leave me enough time before someones voicemail started recording. The droid is light sensor way fast and super sensitive.

The battery has been great, i never feel the phone get hot. It also last all day (this is with me playing with it all the time).

I have only had one freeze (google nav), and Android promptly let me end the unresponsive program, without freezing the whole phone. Coming from my HTC Diamond with Windows Mobile, i can live with a rare program freeze.

All animations are fairly smooth, this includes scrolling and screen transitions.

I have seen a few complaints about the power button, which i don't really get. It seems fine for me, just takes some getting use to reaching with a finger from the back. Again my HTC Touch Diamond was much harder to push.

Battery cover on mine is real stiff, gotta really try to get it off.

I really don't understand why you guys are putting up with reboots, you can be sure if mine start to randomly reboot, I will be at the Verizon store asking for a new Droid.

They weren't offering a Droid Speedo...

I'm planning on it. Haven't had time. Getting the phone took two hours and I'm sure returning will take at least that long.

My batt door is fine but my brothers falls off once or twice a week. His audio output is not right either. I'm not sure if it's software or hardware but it sure sounds like software. We tried playing a song from slacker on my HT the other night and within 3 bass drum hits I hit the latching power switch on my amp. Most horrendous distortion I've ever heard from a source (6+ yrs work exp in audio). VERY hard clipping. Pandora does it too and he says some songs are worse than others... Makes me think software is the issue but it's from two diff apps...

I updated my Droid with *228 and the bad echo went away.
I then added Itunes and a few other apps to the phone and now it is buzzing and has the bad echo making it impossible to talk.
Also it now won't update and I have to call customer service.
I love the phone but not if I can't talk on it.

I got my first Droid Friday. Sound quality through the. Earpiece was horrible. Brought it Back for another. After the the tech tried to tell me all phones sound like that I put up a stink and they reluctantly replaced it. Sound was better. Unfortunately the new one would Randomly reboot itself and I'd be surfing the web and it would take. Me BAck to the Droid startup screen. Woke up this morning it was totally hosed the bottom icons were all lit up and I. Couldn't do anything. Took it back to the Verizon store and I'm on my 3rd one. Hopefully 3 times a charm!!

I hope the 3rd time is the charm for you too! I went to the Verizon store today and the 'data guy' basically said I was wrong-and they couldn't reproduce the problem. I said it didn't matter to me whether they could reproduce it or not-if people couldn't hear me the phone wasn't good.

They said it was the other phones (they are the same phones I used to call), the geographic location, the network, etc. But nothing has changed.

My sound was fine on my 3rd phone until i installed the skin - degraded the sound quality - so i guess my first return was due to the skin. I exchanged the skin for another and everything is good now.
