"Missing Droid X Real-World Give-Away" Contest (1st Post:Updated)

"Droid X designate #1 sees blinking lights, levers pulled. It should blend right in."

Anyone in Nevada?? I think it's in a casino in Vegas!! Slot machines!

There's only a couple hundred casinos in Vegas so it should be easy to find. Since I'm a nice guy I'll give you a hint.

Hint: It's near a slot machine.

It has to be in a van parked somewhere. They can't just sit boxes out and not expect a bomb scare or someone to throw it away. Vans also allow someone to keep an eye on it to verify that none of them have been found yet.

I said this before, but I'll say it again. They can't just go to a location and start giving away Droids. What about all the followers that are playing their "game"? All the phones would be given away to random people that had no clue the event was even happening, before anyone from Twitter got there. Unless you have to print the twitter page and bring it with you or something.

Do you normally go up to strange vans and ask for things?

Is it because some guy in a van gave you candy when you were a kid? :p

Who would see a Verizon van parked somewhere and think "hey, maybe i'll go ask if they can just give me a free phone today" I bet they're in vans or cars right in plain sight just waiting for someone to come up to them and mention the hunt after enough clues have been given to narrow the search to that location. If they're in a state with no clues yet given for that location I'll bet they'll just say they stopped for lunch or to find directions if they're actually even in place yet.

LOL thanks smart ___. :)

I think the three worth checking are the Sahara, Caesar's Palace, and the Hard Rock Cafe, for reasons previously mentioned in this thread. This clue is still vague, but it's a sign that better clues are soon to come. I hope.

Someone also mentioned / suggested the Luxor because it has the X in the name

I'm wondering if maybe these things aren't even really in place yet, and they won't be until they start dropping the more specific clues... I mean and this point the people most likely to find them are people who have no clue about the phone or the hunt...

I agree that the followers should be the finders, but what if someone is smart enough to figure it out before more clues are given? Should he/she be penalized and wait until ALL the clues are out that it's so obvious there'll be a bullrush to the spot? No way. If I can give it a damn good guess and go look somewhere, and it isn't there based on that theory, I'll be pissed if I scratch it off my list and it ends up being correct later cuz "it wasn't fair" to those that aren't as smart as me?!!?

Oh, and before anyone says anything. I know it doesn't make sense to leave them lying out in the open. It won't be, trust me. They are not dumb enough to let it get ruined by rain or sun.

Oh, but if I were in Vegas right now... I'd probably be on a blacklist as some nut running around slot machines!!!!!

What about a little hole in the wall casino by the hoover dam? Still far to vague. I am hoping that there is one by me in So. Cal. I keep waiting for a better clue everyone I know thinks I am crazy for following this. That's why finding one would make it that much better lol

i think this has been said already buttt the paris hotel in vegas is an X shape with the iffel towers blinking lights...

Just came back on a little drive in the Miami area going south towards the Keys and heading home north... No luck for me and I wasn't shy asking every VZ store if they have the DX. None did. I asked 'em all again if they got a special one and got dirty looks :D I didn't see any signs/ Vans either. :(

I might go down to Key Largo tomorrow, again :D

I don't know how I feel about this whole contest anyway. It seems like most people that care enough about the droid X to follow DroidLanding from the beginning are already getting fed up.

On top of that is the fact that it's biased to people living in bigger city areas. Those of us that aren't within 30 minutes of a major city have little to no chance of getting it.

I live about 40 minutes from Boston and maybe an hour and a half from NY. I've already seen a number of people from the area say they're following the twitter account. This means that even if I WAS able to figure it out by the time I got to the location someone else will most likely find it first. It also means that since I'm not in a major city I can just pop down town to see if my guess is right.

I think it should either be based on locations in google maps or some type of quiz / riddles you answer online and it draws from everyone that gets it right.

Maybe I'm just sensitive because I'm not close enough to one but I imagine I'm not alone in this.

Man, where are the Vegas folks? I know at least one person was at the Hoover Dam the other day. You'd think he would be all over this one!

Who was that masked man?

You're now the 3rd person to check this area out. lol It's not down there.

I agree that there are many out there that feel this way. But, until we know what to look for, it's impossible to find. I still stand by my previous statement as well. If the phones are only in very large cities, I won't be signing up with Verizon any time soon, and I'll just save up for an iPhone4. At least they don't string their fans along like this. This could end up being negative publicity for Verizon if they handle this contest poorly.

Personally, my car has a full tank of gas in my driveway, I have my car GPS ready for areas and addresses and I have my hand-held GPS ready for coordinates. I can't guarantee I'll arrive anywhere first, but I'll get there as fast s I can. ^_^

PS: I've been all around Kissimmee/St.Cloud. There is nothing here, and every Verizon store/kiosk knows nothing. I even went to three area Best Buys. Nadda. I do have to say 4 of the 17 people I've talked to at stores knew about the contest but told me they didn't know where the phones were and went so far as to say they cannot participate in the contest because of their job. Tomorrow I'm going to hunt through down town Orlando. If there's even the smallest poster up on a wall or parking garage...I'll find it.

Just got done searching the Sahara. No luck. Not quite sure what I'm looking for other than the phone or a big x or the red droid eye, but didn't find any of them. There weren't actually that many slot machines where levers could be pulled. I asked some of the people that work there, but they were clueless. One guy thought I didn't have enough clues yet. Anyway, maybe someone else found it, but it was not anywhere obvious as of 10 minutes ago.

Didn't check Luxor, Excalibur, Caesar's Palace, Hard Rock, or the Paris. I don't think the clues really support any of those yet. I think we may be one clue away though from finding it. Just depends on what they decide to do. Maybe someone already picked it up at the Sahara. There are a lot of people there and if it was laying out anywhere, it would be picked up. Also, I have a hard time believing it is going to be very concealed because having people come into a casino and start searching behind every slot machine with a lever is going to look awful suspicious.

So, back to waiting unless I have some epiphany before the next clue.

Wait you won't go to Verizon because you cant win a free phone? Seriously, at least they are playing games and trying to make the wait fun for people. Did AT&T do anything of the sorts for the iphone4?

Of course At&t did something for the iPhone 4. They kept it to themselves and didn't allow anyone, not even reviewers, to get their hands on one before the release date. The wait built up the suspense. That way when everyone opened the box and tried to use their shiny new phone, they were surprised by yellow spots and calls dropping from the "death grip".

That was their way of "making it fun" :D

At least we know what we're getting into. Don't expect to get a freebie, but expect to get what you paid for, a quality device.

It's not about what Apple did or does, because quite frankly I loath AT&T's coverage area in Polk County, FL.

However, if the contest ends up with the phones only being given away in large cites, ie. Miami, New York, Las Vegas, etc...I would personally feel disrespected and left out. I don't care if they even pick a small town in Washington state that it would be physically impossible for me to find. At least it would be enough for me to not lose respect for Verizon and still want to support them.

I'm talking about perception and feelings here. Not facts or logic. If Americans only cared about facts and logic when making purchases there would never be a single boycott. Also, even great salesmen and PMA speakers acknowledge that sales are emotionally driven most of the time. Especially for luxury items such as cell phones. No one 'needs' a cell phone. Especially a phone on the scale of a Droid or an iPhone that costs up to and over $100usd per month.

I'm just simply stating that if Verizon only drops phones in such large cities where the chances of a "Droid Hunter" finding them are very rare....I'd feel like they strung me along and wasted my time. Sometimes it's better not to get people's hopes up and let them down, and just consistently treat them like dogs, like Apple does. Since I feel that Verizon is a better company than Apple, I hold them to higher standards.

I look at it this way, why would they take a chance and drop one in a small city where maybe they have a little chance anyone will actually know about it, or drop one in a big city where they are more likely to have more people know about the tweets.

It is all about marketing, I am sorry that you feel disrespected but I don't see why they would one in a smaller city than a bigger one. Who has more people with knowledge of the Droid X, Miami or Clearwater Florida? I would say Miami, and I think that is how they are looking at it.

I live in Indiana, and I am sure they won't release one in my state, will this make me stray from Verizon, no. Also if they did release one here, would they do a big city or a small one. So lets see, release one in Indianapolis or Terre Haute Indiana, I would say go with Indianapolis, way more people.

I don't get the logic behind your argument. There are 12 Droid X out there (As far as we know)/ so this means that only 12 states will get them. So going by your logic VZ customers from the other 38 states should feel disrespected? And coming from Miami, FL should I feel disrespected if the damn thing will end up popping in Jacksonville/ Orlando/ Tallahassee/ Tampa, etc? Or should I feel disrespected on behalf of all fine city folks if it turns out to be in Smallville, USA? Maybe you should just enjoy the hunt? No one is forcing you to participate btw. And who is getting his hopes high? there are about 13,000 people following @Droidlanding. Do the math of the winning chances. We are ALL wasting our time, but it's a fun way to waste it and for a few of us there will be a cool prize at the end ;)
