Hero vs. Evo: my experience

great idea about the email application. i'm gonna try tonite and see if i notice a difference. like u said, all emails go to my gmail account already.
 
But it's not $200 for some of us. Thanks a alot for the info though. I've been reading quite a bit on the Evo forum too. TC
 
I don't mean to naysay but my experience with both devices in the household says the Evo is several orders of magnitude quicker doing just about everything.
 
Dr g, if you put these phones side by side on a table and press the same functions at the same times, you will likely see that there is usually little difference. Opening the same email takes maybe .3 (1/3) seconds longer on the Hero. Launching most apps takes maybe .5 (1/2) seconds longer in my experience. Of course there are a lot of variables in terms of how the phones are set up...

What about dialing lag on hero? I see that on mine and there is a whole forum discussion (very heated BTW) about the hero dialing lag since going to 2.1.

I love my hero but the lagginess is driving me crazy.

Launching a single app is one thing and in the best case I suppose a single action can be fairly quick on the hero. However where the evo just blows its doors off is moving from action to action, viewing a lot of data, etc. Basically in any kind of actual use other than doing one thing to test launch speed of one thing.

For example something I do fairly often, take a photo then share it via email or facebook. On the Hero there is significant lag at each step, while on the Evo each step just happens in a snap with no lag.

It's not even close and the Evo I have is loaded with probably 5x or more the stuff the Hero is. Not to hack on the Hero, I think it's a great device, but it is really far outclassed by the Evo.
 
Granted there are speed differences, but nothing I would pay $450 for, unless I wanted the huge gorgeous screen of course ;-)
For $200, get it.

Doug: I have no lag what so ever using 2.1 (Aloysius version) on my rooted hero.

Of course, as others have pointed out, it's really $200 PLUS $120, if you keep it a year.

Which is of course better than $450 plus $120 per year. :)

I am not willing to pay $120 per year above and beyond my "Everything" plan when I don't even get 3G in many areas where I would use it, and rarely go anywhere with 4G coverage.


I would like to thank all EVO owners for subsidizing 4G and allowing it to roll out further, and eventually be ready for the masses.
 
You should ask for the corporate discount at the Sprint store - they offered it to me, and now I get 25% off the monthly bill - so it ends up being LESS than the $69 I was paying with the Hero.

Or get the discount with the Hero and pay even less... :)

I have been on a plan with a corporate discount (based on my employer) for the 10 years or so that I have been with Sprint.

Yep, I get the 25% corporate discount as well. So instead of $70 (69.99), I pay $52 (before taxes). I have seen a few people mention they got an extra 10% loyalty discount on top of that, so I did some figuring. :) If Sprint were to give me that discount as well (a total of 35%), even with the extra $10 a month charge it would bring me back to $52. And since I am not elegible for an upgrade until October, I figured I'd ask them if they could give me some credit off my bill to offset the difference. Well I called them and it was a no-go on both counts. So I will have my Hero for a while, which is fine because I really am enjoying my Hero. By the time I'm eligible to upgrade, either something better will be out or the price of the EVO will have dropped.

You add the other accounts under your main gmail account via web interface. It's in the settings. Then all email comes pushed through the gmail service.

I spent full retail price on my Evo.... I loved it, and now I'm down to liking it. The horrid framerate cap and choppy video playback really chaps my ass when I use it every day. Pisses me off... the Hero is actually better for mobile gaming, if that's your thing. The Evo has a clearer screen if you read a lot of articles on the go (I do, tech sites and what have you), but scrolling through the pages is annoying because the Evo jumps, stutters, and stumbles it's way through the page. The scrolling, and graphics in general, are superior on the Hero for the moment, that is, if HTC keeps their current plan up to continue botching the Evo patch by patch.

If it weren't for the lag in-keyboard with the Hero, I think I would have definitely returned my Evo by now. That's about the ONLY thing I don't miss from my Hero.

You can either view it all together as I do, or view each account in its own folder (or "label" as they call it.)

It's simple and works faster than the Mail app with pop set for every 15, for example. You can not specify how often gmail pops your accounts, but it seems to be quite often. Usually I get pop mail within a couple minutes.

I second that. I have no lag with Aloysius. Which is keeping me happy until my year is up, then its decision time.
