Interesting converstation with Verizon (2.2)

The performance increase, battery life increase and the installing apps to the SD card is good enough reason why everyone should want 2.2 & I don't see why Verizon & HTC wouldn't put the Eris on 2.2 since the Incredible is getting it. All it seems like its mainly getting it to work around SenseUi and just take out a few things that 2.2 has that the Eris is not capable of running and wallah that should be the last update the Eris should get beside small patches to fix minor glitches that come up in some phones.

As far as 2.1 on my Eris I really like it much better than 1.5 but there is the lag issues on opening apps. I have tried running Launcher Pro and killing SenseUi but i keep coming back to SenseUi because of the widgets and battery life is still from my experience is better on SenseUi. Luckily I have had no problems with it from day 1 (knock on wood) and the 2.1 OTA went smooth and problem free on that end also.

AdrainC14 Verizon wont announce anything official as far as updates regarding the Eris. Remember when we got 2.1 there was no announcement on their forums like the Moto Droid got. We had to check out the update page and just one day it appeared. So I wouldn't get your hopes up for them to announce anything.

I remember reading in December 2009 on Engadget, Phandroid, etc, that Verizon announced Google Navigation will be coming to the Eris which could be 1.6, 2.0, or 2.1.

Verizon commits to 'newer' Android for Droid Eris with Google Maps Navigation in Q1 2010 -- Engadget

i heard that Verizon is skipping 2.2 and 3.0 for the Eris. Apparently in 2012 we are getting 3.5. The reason being, Google is gonna release 3.5 to all android phones released before 2010 to bring back retro phones

What im hoping for at this point in time at least, is that they are testing it out on the eris before they announce anything.

We can be hopeful with the fact that the eris is not listed with the likes of the Hero... yet anyways...

So don't count us out yet fellas!

Just wanted to quickly add my two cents... I know that the vast majority of the people on this forum think that all Verizon reps are liars, and we can't trust anything they say. And while I understand where they are coming from and the need for these things to be taken with a grain or more of salt I just wanted to share a conversation I had today at a Verizon store. My cousin was looking for an air conditioner for her new place and while she was doing that I wandered over to look at the phones. I played with the Incredible for a bit and then started talking to the salesman about the Droid X. He walked over to a cabinet and grabbed one for me to check out. The phone, while huge compared to the Eris, was gorgeous, and very fast. I told him about how I was kind of bummed that I upgraded 6 or 7 months ago with all these amazing phones coming out so soon after. I then asked him if I could, being on a family plan, use someone else's upgrade (my parents keep their phones until they die or break) and he said that I could. He then asked me if I knew 2.2 was coming to the Eris (didn't specify when) and that that would seriously help with the lag, etc. I don't think he would go out of his way to convince me of the update to the Eris when I was quite clearly smitten with the Droid X... that wouldn't make sense from a business standpoint. I wasn't complaining about the eris, just saying how I wouldn't mind a faster phone. Anyway, just thought I'd share that (pointless) piece of information from my day. The End.

Its not that store level reps are liars or cheaters, its just that waaaaaayyyy to many of them talk out of their rears!

I think the differences between 1.5 and 2.1 were more minor than 2.1 to 2.2.

New icons in 2.1, navigation, new menus but most other things as far as what affects me stayed the same.

I think there was a lot of under the hood changes that you didn't see. For me the biggest change was all the apps that we were missing out on.

I don't think that Verizon reps necessarily give out WRONG information, on purpose.
However, I think that the information that they give out is often wrong.

Garbage in garbage out.

It is getting really hard to distinguish the sarcasm from the sincere posts.

At one point in time it was stated that all 2010 phones would be getting 2.2. Now obviously the Eris was a 2009 phone, but you have to look at some of the 2010 phones out there that will obviously be getting 2.2 and look at the positives while thinking of the Eris.

EVO, Incredible and Aria are all 2010 phones running Sense. They should all be getting 2.2 this year. The Aria is incredibly close to being a GSM version of the Eris/Hero (great form factor BTW). HTC will already be building 2.2 with Sense for other phones. No reason that they can't or won't offer it to everyone even if the carriers don't.

I would bet and say no. I think they Verizon will work hard to get 2.1 working smoothly, but as far as spending more time and money on another update for a discontinued phone, no.

This. They already are going to have the Sense software updated, and it has been proven the Eris can handle 2.2. I won't be upset if the Eris doesn't get 2.2, however, I think it will get it. It wouldn't be like upgrading to 2.1 because there are already more than one or two phones running Sense that are capable of the upgrade.

All I want is the bluetooth voice dialing feature. Used it on my girfriend's Droid running a 2.2 custom ROM and it was awesome.

Not sure if it is Verizon spending the money on the update. HTC will be getting the update for 2.2 with Sense together regardless. It will then be up to Verizon on whether they want to distribute it or not. HTC could also make it available via download if Verizon doesn't want to go through the trouble. It would be a great way for HTC to build brand loyalty in the Android world.

Brand loyalty is definitely an important factor they'll need to seriously consider. Look at all the iPhone die-hards!

I personally don't think that we will see an official ota update to 2.2, but I think we may see some leaked versions of 2.2 pop up in the future. I'm sure HTC has ported a version of 2.2 for the eris and the hero (if not yet than the will soon), probably just for in house testing, but it probably does exist. We just need some good person to borrow it and upload it to the interweb for all to enjoy :-)
