"Missing Droid X Real-World Give-Away" Contest (1st Post:Updated)

FYI, I was in DC today and took a stab at getting the X.

I live in Chevy Chase DC, other side of the park and north of Ben's Chili bowl. I saw the tweet about 20 seconds after it was posted, and knew I could get to Ben's in about 15 minutes. Given that no other ones had been found in less than 35 minutes, I figured I had a good shot. I flew down there, parked a few blocks away, and was walking up at 1220. The guy who won was already signing forms and had it in his hand. Completely disapointing. At least I got a $20 gift card out of it. But that clue was way obvious to anyone who's been in DC for a while (I grew up here).

I did check out a demo unit. Seems not as big as I was worried it might be. I only checked it out for 30 seconds cause I had to get back to my family, but it seemed pretty snappy.

I know they wouldn't put it in one of the parks. "Ok guys if you want #6 you'll have to pay $14 to park, $78 to get into the park. Wait in the 30-45 minute line to ride Pirates of the Caribbean. When you get to the treasure room part of the ride, jump off of the boat, swim over to the side, watch out for those fans underwater that push the current around (they sting a little). Break through the plastic jail bars and claim your new Droid X!"

Guys, I think the way this contest works is pretty clear: it is up to the discretion of the Verizon Reps.

They basically give you clues when they feel like it about the state, city, the general vicinty, and finally the exact coordinates. I'm willing to bet that their managers told them to simply give a Droid X away via twitter, give some gift cards, take some video footages and pics. That's it. As long as they do that, they can give the Droid X any way they want via Twitter and google maps. I'm sure they aren't allowed to collude with friends.

Some Verizon Reps may be in the spirit of a hunt and think of more elaborate ways to give it away. Some probably don't care and would just give it away asap. Some in between.

So i wouldn't read into these clues too much, just when that "vicinity" clue pops up, you better hope you are in that area with a smartphone and a cab ready to go (Pay that cab driver to keep the meter running). Once the coordinates pop up, make the mad dash.

I'm glad they are not giving one away in NC now. I probably wouldn't have any chance of getting one. I'm not sure where in Raleigh they would stash it but I do if it were in Charlotte.

Oh..Sorry, I didn't mean for my response to be offensive. I thought you were serious, as i read a couple pages back people were suggesting things like that.. I'm sorry, I meant no offense nor did i mean to provoke something..

I've applied at verizon mutliple times, not sure what they're looking for but I guess it isn't me, but I would love to do any kind of work for them.

I agree with this, but it would be nice if some of the diligence from some of the more hardcore followers were rewarded.

I got a gift card @ 1220ish, the coords weren't tweeted until 1230. Someone said they came by @ 1245 and they were out of gift cards already. There were like 6 or so people already there when I got there.

So, if you want the gift card, you better be quick. If the clue is obvious and it'll take you a 1/2 hour to get there, its probably not worth the bother because you'll end up with nothing to show for it.
 
Ok. No doubt this was fun...until the last one was dropped. No biggie. VZW doesn't owe me anything for being a loyal customer. Props to them for getting folks fired up over the phone and the hunt. I do not agree that they calledvit a hunt, but I'm not getting bent over semantics. Good luck to the rest of you with the other phones. Guess I'm out $200. See you all on the official X owner forums...

Um, the final clue IS NOT the GPS clue. This @droidlanding twitter confirms it.

Designate #21 was at N 38 55.028 W 77 01.727. Blake Ourso was on hot its trail & found it before the coordinates went out. Congrats!
