Help Evo Rebooting on its own

my factory reset fixed the problem. i doubt it's an individual software issue as i removed all apps prior to the factory reset and it didn't fix anything. changing the "data always on" only fixed it until you power down/on the phone again.
i'm also worried this problem will show up again in the future as well.
 
Well after the Factory Reset I have not had an issue opening up GPS apps, it has worked every time. But I was on my walk and was on pandora and I got a phone call, I was on it for about 20 minutes when it just randomly rebooted. :mad:

If it happens one more time I will exchange it. PERIOD!!!

If everyone is having this issue and it needs an upgrade im cool, but if this is happening on only a few phones, I dont want to get stuck with one of them.

While it seemed that a good number of phones had the initial issue, the GPS-related issue does not appear to be that common. The initial issue has all but disappeared after the latest OTA.
 
Mine started rebooting yesterday after using Bump for the first time. Removed it and it has rebooted a couple of times since.
 
So I haven't seen anyone mention this specifically (although I admit I didn't read every post in this long thread), but I believe the culprit (at least on my phone) is Swype. I was only having reboot issues when any app invoked the GPS (Foursquare, google maps, sprint nav, etc). I did a factory reset and then installed apps one at a time and tested google maps & sprint nav to see if it would reboot. I would manually power down and back up then test again to make sure everything had loaded correctly. No issues at all over the course of a couple days until I re-installed the Swype Installer which, once installed and opened downloads the newest Swype Beta. Once that was installed and opened, any time GPS was activated my phone would reboot. I uninstalled Swype, but still had the issues. So I did another factory reset and have loaded almost all of my apps back onto the phone (minus Swype) and have yet to have a single reboot!

YMMV, but for me and my EVO, no issues at all without Swype. And trust me I don't work for some rival company trying to diss Swype...I miss it SORELY, but what I don't miss is having my phone reboot constantly. So for now, my EVO will be using only the factory keyboard input until I hear that Swype has been updated to correct this issue.

Here is the list of apps I had installed on my phone that I'm still in the process of re-installing to ensure that none of them are the culprit as well.

Interesting. My phone has re-booted twice (randomly) since I got my white one last Wednesday. It didn't really bother me, but I'm wondering if it is Swype. If so, I may have to uninstall.

We'll see if it does it again in the next week or so.

Just FYI, my phone would still reboot whenever any app tried to use the GPS even AFTER I uninstalled Swype. I had to do a full factory reset to correct the issue. Without Swype installed this time, going on about 5 days now without any reboots after the factory reset.

Thanks for the tip. I'm going to evaluate on a day-to-day. If I end up having to hard reset, that's fine by me. The great thing about Android is it doesn't take hours for me to get my setup exactly like I currently have it and like it, so I don't mind hard re-setting as much as I did with WinMO.
 
Just recently started having this problem as well I guess I am glad to see that I'm not the only one with this problem even tho it is still fairly frustrating except mine doesn't reboot while using gps or maps or anything it is just random seems like. One time while on the phone another just sending texts. I may try uninstalling swype then factory reset if more people confirm this to be the problem. thing Is I don't even use swype its just installed I still use the factory keyboard.

Yup. Happened to me again today. It's really random. Before I hard reset, I'm going to keep on evaluating "when" it occurs (to see if it's a timing thing). This time, it happened when I brought the phone out of sleep mode (immediately after unlocking the phone). I was trying to pinch to zoom, so I could go quickly go to another home screen. I went to the Photobucket app (which I only use sometimes) and all of a sudden, the screen wasn't responding. Then, the Sprint home screen came on (so I realized it soft re-set the phone).

I don't mind it right now because it's not happening in the middle of my doing something important, but if it does it during a business phone call or email, I'll start to be more concerned.

Had a droid for 7 months and it was wonderful. Rebooting started one day after a few weeks of things getting slower, particularly messaging.

Rebooting continued randomly and the phone got generally slower, including internet speed.

Verizon sent replacement. Same rebooting.
Did a factory reset and didn't install any apps. Same rebooting.
Verizon sent another replacement. Same.
Removed SD card, same. Got new battery, same.

Verizon sent Eris. Used a different gmail account. Still rebooting.

I feel cursed.

My only guess outside of this is that I'm getting refurbished phones with the same hardware issue that eventually developed in my new phone.

This is so incredibly frustrating.

I think you ended up in the wrong phone thread, but interesting to hear it happens to other Android phones as well.
 
Thanks - I wasn't sure if this was just for one type of phone, since someone had mentioned Incredible. I have been searching for definitive answers to this for several weeks and the rebooting seems to be happening in all android phones (??) - for sure droid, eris, incredible, evo.

I started a new thread :)
 
I have been using SWYPE for over a month now, and my rebooting issues stopped after I checked the enable mobile networks button again (or always use mobile networks, whatever it is, you know what I mean). I did have a couple of issues with single reboots when using GPS, but have not had any rebootsin the last 3 weeks or so. I just turn off all things I am not using, when I don't need them, WiFi, GPS, mobile data, sync, 4G, and Bluetooth

Interesting. I have that checked all the time, so I just tried unchecking and then re-checking it. We'll see if it solves anything.
 
Mine is rebooting after I have been talking on my phone for awhile. It doesn't happen every time but often enough to be irritating. I have hard reset my phone and it did not change anything.
 
My phone re-booted again today, but it was after the phone was low battery (around 9%) and I brought it out of standby.

I soft re-set (e.g. took battery out and waited :60). We'll see if it does it again before the next time I charge.
 
Just got a replacement phone after 3 weeks of rebooting. The Hard reset would "cure" the problem for a few days to about a week. The new phone has been good all day today but i won't be sure until it doesn't reboot for a couple of weeks. Also battery life has been MUCH better so far. Don't know if it is related to GPS problem.
 
Did a hard reset and was fine. Rebooted first time I used google maps. All the gps demands on phone were fine but google maps sets reboot.
 
Weird. It did it again, but this time at 30% battery life. Seems like it'll do reboot after coming out of standby.
 
There is certianly something going on with the GPS enabling apps. 5 Days ago, I backed up all of my apps with App Brain, saved my contacts to SD card, and did a factory reset.
Then reinstalled all apps as previous... the phone worked great for about 4 days. I was able to run GPS apps at will without any issues. Then out of the blue, the GPS rebooting started again.
