Orange UK 2.1 update news

I emailed Orange the other day asking them when the 2.1 update was expected. I got a phone call from them today, and they advised that they had hoped to have it available for the end of June, but they've had to push it back by a few weeks.

So they're expecting it to be available from middle to end of July. They said Orange customers would receive an SMS to advise that it was available, and there would be a download link on the Orange website.

Good news indeed, and straight from the horses mouth this morning.
Hi i phoned Orange UK today at 10am and tech support told me the update for Android 2.1 on the "htc hero" is ready and would be sent out over the air from mon 26th, this is great news for all orange hero owners! Hope this helps!!!

Well if this is true then why has nobody from Orange made the effort to tell us this.. I`ve had 4 texts from orange this week tryin to sell me stuff, so it shouldn`t be too hard for them to send a text saying "Sorry for the delay, 2.1 will be delivered from the 26th".. Simples !

Sorry, but I don`t think we`re gonna see it tomorrow.

I too have just spoken to a nice man at orange who said either tomorrow or tuesday. Does anyone know of a forum that gives advice of what to expect and how prepare for it? I assume it means i'll loose everything?

Don't panic you won't lose anything. You should have received a text a while ago, that was "part 1". What we've been promised for Monday(or is it Tuesday?)is "part 2". It should go very smoothly but I'd make sure I was on wi-fi and not 3g given the size of the file you'll get over the air.

I didn't receive any texts from Orange. I very much doubt that there will be an update tomorrow.

I didn't get it either.

Sorry to disagree Al but part 1 has not been released by Orange yet, so if anything is to be released tomorrow it will only be part one of the update if like other carriers the update is being released in two parts.

I got part 1 about 10 days ago. It was something along the lines of "we are preparing your phone for an update" text from Orange, I was told to delete the text then restart the phone.

For the record I don't think we'll see any update anytime soon.

I dont think that message you got was for the 2.1 update. I got similar message followed instructions and it broke my mobile internet, i phoned them up and was instructed i would get another text and to do same and it would fix my mobile internet, it fixed it. I asked the guy what was going on and he said they had sent out messages in error which had broke a number of users mobile internet. Probably more orange branding nonsense.

We live in hope that an update message will appear

I am a premier customer with orange and been with them for 12yrs and what they said was that the update had only just been exepted by orange and fully customised with thier software and working fine. I will phone HTC later this morning and orange to get more confirmation but i'm sure it is ready to be sent out! Don't forget you heard it here first!!!

Hi. I'm currently running a custom 2.1 rom, and last week I was even trying out one of the new custom 2.2 roms.

Can anyone explain to me what would be the advantage of using the 'official' 2.1 rom over a custom one?

As far as I can see, I would lose features if I were to revert to the official rom e.g. root access, overclocking, apps on SD card.

I've been following this thread to see if/when the offcial rom will arive. And if it does appear on Tuesday, then I'm not sure whether to use it or stick with my custom rom.

Does anyone have a phone number for Paul the Octopus? I was just wondering if he could see if today would be the day?

Just spoke to orange(again)no official launch date it's still in testing.

Once again they are telling different people different stories.

Conflicting stories have been given to members of the facebook group who have rang Orange this morning too. One saying their just waiting for the OK from technical staff which could come later this morning, another saying she keeps being given different release dates because it keeps getting put back as the update is making the phone freeze and shut down. How hard would it be for Orange to send a memo to all customer service staff to make sure they all give out the same story?

So Anyways.. back on topic and not being told to root or gold card again....

Has anyone had any progress or updates on their phone, I'm still hoping mid day today or tomorrow to be the update? kind of relying on people that may receive it it before me to let everyone know as we may not all somehow have our phones set to sync tomorrow as it only does it every 2 weeks apparently :(

I too had wondered whether we'll just get the option to update when our phones decide to check for updates (every two weeks). So on the off chance that the update was going to be released, every day or so, I set the date on my phone forward at least two weeks (to force the check for update) and as of yet ........ nothing  But there's still just over 12 hours left in the day who knows they might surprise us :D

Same, been doing the date trick alot today :P Only issue is ti messes up my 3g watchdog stats and foces a rnadom mybackup to run. Oh well though, I want 2.1 :(

But back on topic, i really don't know what orange are playing at with the update. I was talking to a guy [in person] who works in the Darlington call center, and he said Orange are rubbish etc etc and that is why he is on o2. He then swore [alot] and said but don't quote me on that lol.

I work as a software tester (NOT FOR ORANGE), and I can't understand why they're giving out so many release dates and not meeting them.

This morning, I'm in the middle of finishing off a release plan for some work I've been testing for the past month. The release date is fixed, and we have to meet it. So all the stops are pulled to make sure we meet it.

If the date has to be moved, it has to go all the way up the chain of managers for approval, and there has to be a very good reason for not meeting a date. Even then, people get a slap for not meeting the date.

It seems Orange either don't have a very good software development/test team in place, with very lax controls and processes, or they're not really sure if/when they'll release it. It's probably more to do with the developers not being able to make the ROM work, rather than the testers. The testers will just be finding problems, and the developers will be working to fix them.

If I thought I could phone Orange and speak to a tester on their level to get answers, then I would phone them. But I can't be bothered with the customer service muppets.

Got to agree with you Messy, in any business deadlines are deadlines which everyone strives to meet simply because in cases like this it

The plain and simple fact is Orange don't care about their customers, they don't have to, because of the way the contract is written and if there are any problems, connections, upgrades the onus is on the customer to prove it, Orange can simply say there is nothing wrong with the phone and hang up.

I was a 12 business customer with O2, in all that time I called them exactly twice, everything was so smooth I didn't have to waste my time calling them, god knows how many times I've been in touch with Orange in the last year, it must run into hundreds.

But walk into any Orange shop and tell them you're looking for the latest phone on a semi decent contract and they'll spin you such a story it's not true, I'm sorry I fell for it, I won't fall for it again.

Al

I wonder if anybody at Orange is aware of the level of resentment this is causing amongst their customer base... anybody pointed out this thread to them for example?

If I ran their customer relations, and saw a thread like this I'd be absolutely horrified. And I'd then start kicking butt all over the company until somebody got the whole sorry business sorted out.

Edit: Just saw the links to Facebook group, and signed up!
