Want incredible battery life? (OFFICIAL HTC INCREDIBLE BATTERY THREAD)

my phone idle takes up most of my battery life is this the case with anybody else, i have everything is this thread pretty much done and using wifi and my updates and refresh rates are pretty spaced out any idea y this is or is everyone else have this going on.
Nothing wrong, unless you're having horrible battery life.

Read post #33 you bitter know-it-alls.

Blackberry Storm chargers work with Incredible - Page 4 - Android Central Forums

and there's more to come....

I agree with u on one this, I bought mine from ebay, and the charger came with the phone was not the oem one. When I use it to charge my DInc, the touch screen's touch sensing ability immediately died, however when I disconnect it from the phone, its all back to normal. Thanks for your thread, I only charged for 30 mins, so hopefully I didnt kill my DInc yet. =S

The charger I got was bb compatible with 5-11V / 400-900 mA output which is quite different from the 5V 1A output from the standard HTC OEM charger. I guess not all chargers obey the rules. ;p

Your issue appears to be twofold... the phone itself and shoddy aftermarket charger that does not conform to the standard. An unresponsive screen is commonly seen with improperly grounded Incredibles. I'd suggest searching the Incredible forum and subforums using the keyword "grounding" as there are a few discussions relating to this.

Is charging the phone for 5-6 hours before you use it a big deal to your battery life? My phone's supposed to come in on monday, and i have a 3 and a half hour ride to and from the doctor's office (not counting the time that i'm actually in the doctors office) and i would love to be able to use my Incredible while i was there.

And if charging it first is a big deal to the battery life, would a car charger work fine or would it be bad for it?
I guess I didn't get that memo about the charge-8-hours-while-off (and I typically don't read manuals), so I plugged mine in and started playing with it immediately while it was charging. I'd say I did that for a couple hours, then left it on to charge the rest of the way. A couple days later I let it drain all the way to give the batt gauge a zero and span adjustment. No problems so far; after an average day of some calls, a few texts, and 30 min off and on of surfing and showing off the phone, I typically have 75-80% battery left.

I figured the battery life would suck (I mean, 1GHz processor and a good-sized screen won't run off stray cosmic rays), so I sort of preemptively dealt with any possible battery issues by buying numerous microUSB cables and chargers -- one for office, one for car, 2 or 3 for the house and traveling.

Would like to know what you think, since you actually know what you are talking about, is the best way to treat my Incredible - keep i hooked to charger when possible? Let it drain to the end of the day, then turn it off and charge? (Current plan, based on someone's report that the Incredible charges 30% more when turned off . . .)

Would really appreciate any suggestions / advice.

Thanks.

I hate to drudge up the issue that sparked a fire storm, but I tried to warn people. Have a buddy who's gf's Incredible is doing funky things right after using BB charger.

All I know is that my Inc will be here in 3 days and I have the power of knowledge and EXPERIENCE to avoid frying my phone. How sweet it is!!

What's funny is people on here saying "mine works fine with my 99 cent charger from eBay", and now they say its your "shoddy aftermarket charger". RFF!!

All I know is that my Inc replacement will be here in 3 days and I know better than to use my BB chargers so my phone doesn't get fried. The power of knowledge and EXPERIENCE. How sweet it is!!

FWIW - I bought a micro-USB charger off ebay a couple years ago for my Env2. I figured it should also work with my Dinc, so I tried it. It appeared to charge fine - but when I turned the phone on while charging, there was no response to the touch screen. Unplugging the charger restored that. So buyer beware. YMMV.

watch your battery life closely. not sure if you are in your 30 days or not, but Verizon is catching on this matter and you can return it.

Not sure if this has been posted here yet, but dreamersipaq on xda-developers came up with a way to recalibrate the battery meter and possibly help battery life. I'm trying it right now, not sure how well it works. Requires root.

Battery recalibration

If you're experiencing higher than normal battery drain, try the following:

1. Charge the phone to full battery; let it keep charging until the battery says it is fully charged. Do not wait until the light is green, it isn't always fully charged, causing a lot of inaccuracies. (You can check by going to: Settings -> About Phone -> Status -> Battery Level = Full.)
2. Boot to recovery mode and go to console (or adb shell) and type:

mount -a
rm /data/system/batterystats.bin

NOTE: Newer Amon_Ra recoveries have an option to delete the battery stats, do this in place of the console commands above.

NOTE: To have the most accurate of battery stats, reboot the phone immediately after wiping the battery stats and wait for CM to boot completely to the desktop. Once your entire boot is done and you have full access to the phone, go ahead and pull the charger and continue with this troubleshooter.

1. Do not charge the phone until after draining the battery completely, resulting in it automatically shutting off.
2. Recharge the phone completely and then use as you normally would.

When I initially charged the phone, I did so with the power off and with the unplug-replug back in trick to get it to max battery, then executed the shell commands. Not sure how well it works yet, but figured I'd post it so others can try it as well.

Thanks for the tips above.

Not sure how much you all care but here are some stats from my battery levels:

2 yellow bars under about phone-> battery->
Up time: 61:00:22
Awake time: 4:22:30

Battery use:
2d 13h 0m 0s since unplugged.
cell standby: 39% (time without a signal 0%)
phone idle: 39%
Android system: 10%
wi-fi: 10%
display: 3%

I will leave the phone charging overnight and then do the turn off and charge trick until green LED lights up. I do a little web browsing. facebook and twitter checking. not too many calls, some texts, some emails. I haven't used the phone too much (clearly) over this period overall. Thoughts?...

awake time seems to be the key. My awake time with facebook, news, etc syncing every 4 hours or so, was about HALF the total uptime. Way too much.

It's too much of a pain to try to isolate a problem if there was one, so I went nuclear. I turned off mobile broadband always on, turned off background data, turned off all automatic syncing. If I want to check recent tweets and statuses, I will do it manually.

I'm not sure if google voice texts and voicemails will still come in, but unfortunately that too will have to be sacrificed to the battery life gods. I don't use the phone enough to warrant constant checking for that stuff.

Now my awake time is 2% or so of my uptime (very light use in the last 24 hours) and battery is at over 80%. Bluetooth had used 30% of that, so off it went as well.

Now I have a phone I don't have to plug in constantly. To hell with syncing.

I use my phone somewhat like this too. turning off all the background stuff, and checking msgs manually once an hour. It actually helps me concentrate on other work instead of being interrupted by notifications that come in randomly. Wish there was an app that queued up all the notifications and only let them thru on a defined interval (15/30/60 mins.) Reminds me of some articles I've read recently about how our lives are constantly interrupted by gadgets all the time.

I have a very newb question. How are you all getting the battery remaining percentage? I see all kinds of posts where people say after "X" number of hours I have 85% battery left? Where does the phone show this? I have looked all over in settings and do not see where I can display the percentage.

Any help would be appreicated

Edit: Nevermind I found the info in another thread. I finally asked the right question in the search form to find it...lol

I have noticed that by turning off the "enable always-on mobile data" has helped out immensely with the battery life. Days where i was barely getting the phone to last to the end of the work day are now lasting till i go to sleep and still have 30-50% left.

A lot of people are discouraged with the battery 'problems'. Here's what I experienced/found:

After installing and trying out several apps with my new DInc, I was experiencing a battery drain problem- I was only getting 5-7 hours on a full charge- with minimal usage. I installed taskiller, and started shutting down apps when I knew I was done using my phone for a while. Guess what- I now could go all day and only use half the battery with moderate usage. The majority of my problem was a few apps, especially Bubble (level), that drained the battery rapidly.

Now not everyone has this app, but it is a good example that there is no single solution: everyone's usage is different. Maybe you have another app that is draining. Maybe it is a widget that is constantly syncing.

You just need to experiment, and through process of elimination- determine what your battery culprit is, and make the needed adjustments.

Remember too, before complaining about poor battery design: This is more than a cell phone. It is a computer! You wouldn't expect to run a laptop all day on a single charge (how big a battery does that have?!) There are certainly faulty batteries, DIncs, and SD cards, that can cause battery drain, but they are the exception rather than the rule.

In Soviet Union, battery drains YOU!

That entire post read like a Smokey the Bear PSA :)

I have the Incredible. I charge it overnight, every night. Its brand new. as soon as I use the gmail or facebook feature, within 10 minutes, the battery symbol goes down......I keep it on and use advanced app killer then turn off screen, I check Facebook, gmail 3 times a day and maybe send 10 txts, maybe 2-3 phone conversations, 10 min each.....on my way home, the phone is dead, its on 8am - 5pm........is this normal?

Yep, it's normal unfortunately. Not right...but normal.

People will tell you all sorts of widgets and apps and tricks you should use to get "normal" battery life out of your phone. My point has always been you can't get "normal" battery life out of it if you use it "normally" - meaning as it was advertised you could.

Best bet is to have an extra charger at work and plug it in while there - and/or purchase the extended battery from Verizon.

my android system is 36% of my battery usage. Is this normal?

There really is no "normal". It depends on what you've been doing with your phone. It's showing you which things have drained your battery so far. Which processes have drained your battery will depend entirely on what apps you have running and which ones specifically you've been using.

Every person's battery usage statistics are going to be different because everybody installs different apps and uses their phone differently.
