Root Considering rooting

I read the Rooting Q&A, and most of the rooting guides on this forum, and noticed how most people say its a completely different phone after they root.
I'll be getting my first refurb on Thursday or Friday (it's shipping out today (Wednesday) and after noticing how slow my first Eris had gotten (though I'm getting the refurb because trackball issues, yay for scrolling all the way to the left) I decided I might want to take a shot at rooting.

One question has been constantly nagging me though, my current phone and most likely the refurb will have gotten all the OTA updates from 1.5 up. Is it still possible to root it?

Also, I was on the fence trying to decide if this would go in the Root forum or the normal forum, since it is a root question but I haven't actually rooted my phone yet I couldn't really decide. If it is the wrong section please move it.

I rooted after installing all the OTA updates using the "root for dummies" in the subsection. Worked like a charm, I love my phone again! I chose XTRROM3.0.3 as my primary rom after trying out the latest versions of Kaosfroyo and White widow. Still pretty new to it but it's simple with all the information in this forum.

I think that since it has become such an easy process that is completely reversible, you just need to try it to see if it's for you. There are plenty of ROMs that are very close to the stock ROM such as xtrSense 3.0. I'm trying it out and I'm not sure that I want to stay with Sense, but I am getting great battery life and speed is good. I don't think you will look back.
 
Now I have another question, how do I know what I should give SU permissions to, so I don't accidentally screw something up.

Just about anything that as been discussed on here. If in the market it says it is a new app with a small amount of downloads and is a root only app, I wouldn't download it. But most things will be fine

Alright, and this one might be kind of stupid, but I figured I would ask anyway.
Do non root apps ever require/ask for SU permissions?

You can download any app from the market and if your phone is not rooted, it won't give SU permissions. As you read through the above tutorial, notice that you will backup your current configuration exactly as it is. It really is hard to screw up a rooted ROM and if you do, you can go back to where you last backed up.
 
I did it last weekend following the DETAILED Leak Root Tutorial. I'm on a Mac and the tutorial really made it easy.

I jumped in and went straight to Froyo!

I'm using this rom : { cyanogen tazz v2 update/7/27/10 \market\mms\a2sd\CM6/Froyo Edition

I too am loving my phone again! Very fast and no lag! When I dial the phone is usually ringing before I put it to my ear. Never did that before.

Surprisingly I'm not worried about that (I know that was directed at the post above yours). I came dangerously close to bricking my iPod Touch while I was trying to jailbreak it (It was stuck on the connect to iTunes screen) but I managed to get it off of that and working again, so I'm not really worried about bricking my phone.
 
I rooted my phone this morning and loaded Evil Eris 3.0. Totally different phone.... Using the rooting for dummies was very easy. I'm already ready to try different ROMS.

I thought of yet another question.
I noticed that with some roms you have to flash Google Apps, is that the case for all roms?
 
I just rooted last night with the Stock rom and I'm loving the overclocked speeds. I'm leaning toward installing Evil Eris right now.
 
I'm using xtrSense now and it also requires flashing google apps. It took about 15 seconds to accomplish this and I was done.

Sorry, I was just struck (at the time) at the opportunity for such an easy response (dont' get those that often :D). I'm sure there's quite a few out there that don't require flashing extra things to make them "whole". I don't remember exactly the reasons why they are not included (I think the Cyanogen-based ones are like this because of a cease-and-desist order/agreement due to potential copyright issues; you had to install these apps like this separately so all the lawyers were happy; so, I'm thinking that many non-Cyanogen ROMs will make the "no special extra flashing list").

I would suggest looking through the "[ROM]"-prefixed threads over at XDA (Droid Eris Android Development - xda-developers) for any details and verification, but here's a quick list of a couple that I quickly looked at (I'm sure there's more):

Alright thanks, out of those Eris Lightning and Sense-able would be my favorites. I also noticed KaosFroyo doesn't need Google Apps flashed, but I'm not sure I wanna go with that since it's still got some bugs.
 
I just rooted tonight! Very easy! I installed the Aloysius 2.0.1 v12 ROM. Everything seems to be running good.

I'm having a little difficulty following the apps2sd directions, but I'll continue to research. I noticed that I only have 60mb of internal space available with this ROM.

Also, I lost my Verizon NFL Mobile App. It's not available in the market!! Ugh.

If you Google "verizon nfl mobile apk" you should be able to find it :D
