Loosing emails

I have just noticed that I an now looking emails when I read them in the mail app (not gmail but the HTC mail). I have my mail set up to the pop on my googlemail account. I can go into mail and see my new mail, but if I then refresh all the mail will disappear.

I upgrade to Froyo last night and prior to that all was well. I have not changed any settings on mail or my googlemail account.

What's going on?

I've lost a load of mine over the last 2 days.
Yesterday, 3 new mails appeared and within 3 secs, 2 just vanished.
This morning, about 8 existing ones were there. Half an hour later, all gone.

Not sure as well why my phone gets some emails my pc doesn't (no spam filters) and vice versa.

I had that yesterday as well. I was checking my mail using the Yahoo app and there was one I was going to reply to but it just vanished  I tried refreshing but it didn't come back. I then went into my K-9 app and the email was still there so I was able to reply from that.

I've also noticed that many of the emails never seem to arrive on my PC. It makes me wonder if they were getting lost before I started checking emails on my phone.

I don't have Froyo yet so it can't be that.

If you are using gmail and want to access it on multiple devices you should all be using IMAP on all your devices instead of POP (this is how the Gmail app does it). This way everything is synced over all your devices instead of one coming along and downloading them from the server and the others missing out. I access my email on my phone, work pc, ipod touch, home pc(s) a laptop and a netbook all using IMAP and they are all still stored online in my gmail.

POP is really an outdated email technology designed for when you only had a single machine to download your email and when it downloaded it deleted from your ISP's mail server.

They all have their own local cached copy of my email in the folders that I set up and any change I make on any device (e.g. moving\deleting an email) is automatically updated on any other device I sync.

I suggest you look into how to set up IMAP for gmail and everything should be so much easier for you.

Yes IMAP is loads better than POP. I think my problem yesterday must be a different issue as I am already using IMAP.

Same happened to me....I had a couple of important emails in K-9 from a personal POP email account and a few days later they vanished. Looks like they went after I checked email on my home PC. Glad I finally found out where they went!

Make sure in the mail settings (settings > send/receive) that "delete mail on server" is off. That way a copy will remain on the mail server to download on your PC later.

I can't see why emails disappear from the phone though.

I have the same thing. Before the update everything was fine. Now, all mails gone all of sudden.

I did manage to localize the problem a little better. The mail is stored on my phone until I go to Outlook on my pc and receive my mail there. After I've received it there and taken all he mail from the server, all mail disappears from my phone.

I can't find the correct settings in my phone to undo what Froyo changed though.

I didn't change anything in Outlook. Everything worked fine before Froyo.

Somehow the phone doesn't store the incoming mails anymore but reads them from the server, so SD soon as outlook (pc) has received them my mails in my phone vanish. I'm looking for a way for my phone to store the mails again.

Reading the froyo bugs topic and I'm not the only one with this problem unfortunately.

IMAP is w*nk - the technology is good but the conversation style in gmail is horrible. Conversations are for messaging clients NOT email.

If using POP from PC and phone then create another gmail account. So you will have account A (your current one) and account B (your new one)

Set your phone up to use account B - then set account A to forward everything to account B but keep the emails in the inbox as well.

The PC pops account A and phone pops account B. Never any problems :)

Also works with IMAP.

Isn't that more to do with the way the gmail app is set up rather than the IMAP technology? I have my mail set up using IMAP in K-9 and it doesn't do that.
