Root Guide to Rooting 2.2 for Windows and Linux

I did not read every message in this thread but the Linux instructions are confusing and the title of this thread also. It is titled "rooting" but does more than simply root the phone. To root a phone means only to have root permission and has nothing to do with a complete OS update.

Yea this does give you a custom recovery as well but for the most part that goes along with rooting in android. You do also have to flash a rom to get rid of the 2.1 stuff that is flashed with the SPRecovery sbf but if you use FRG01b link I supplied its the same as stock.

1 && 2: Where do we download these files? The phone or the computer? Seems like the desktop computer but then this makes step six confusing.
Yes you download them to the computer. Im not sure why that makes step 6 confusing. Step 6 puts your phone in bootloader mode which is required for flashing an sbf.

3 && 4: Makes no sense. The only way this works is if you download the files to your computer since md5sum errors with permission denied. So either the phone has to be rooted. OR this is done on the computer. Which then makes no sense because of the following steps.

This is done on the computer

6: What does this accomplish?

Puts the phone in bootloader mode so an sbf can be flashed

Need I continue? there is more, but I suppose once this is sorted the rest may make sense.

I may be totally off here, but I am a Linux admin. for about 10 years and these instructions are confusing though I do appreciate the time you spent writing this.

Hopefully that helps sort it out for you. Honestly you are the first person I have had call the directions confusing. I will try to update them later and make it more clear what steps are done on the computer and what are done on the phone.

Okay so what I am only trying to do is simply gain root privs. Gonna have to do more research.

I think it was step 6 that threw the whole thing off for me. I did step 2 times but the phone does not seem to be in boot loader mode. So I was thinking, ok do these files need to be on the sdcard for this step to do something. I see now that I need to get the phone in boot loader mode.

Only way I know of to do that is to use easy root or figure out how to get the exploit that Easy Root uses to work without using Easy Root. The exploit that easy root uses is exploid and can be found here
C skills: android trickery

So far no one but the dev of Easy root has adapted that exploit that I know of.

When using RSD err basically step 13
RSD gives me this error
Failed flashing process. Failed flashing process. Error pricessing flash file. (0x700F);phone connected

Halp?

I use the UP on dpad when rebooting the mto droid, but the phone does not enter in whatever mode that is. It just boots to the normal android gui.

Any suggestion?

you are probably press the wrong up. Up is towards the screen/capacitive buttons

To be clear so there is no confusion and this is an insane problem, I know. :)

I have been using the d-pad on moto droid ( right side of slide out keyboard ) . I turn phone back on and hold UP as in I press down on the top of the dpad and I hold this through the full boot. If done correctly, I should not see the android GUI but the bootloader, correct.?

If yes, then this is what I have been doing.

I got it to work.

Maybe say something in the guide, since it was noted that this wont wipe the users data, to not do the steps in the guide that WIPE the users data.

In step 18 it says this

So if you use one of these two you can skip steps 24 and 25

The reason those steps are still there is because if you use another rom those steps are required

Quick question for ya OMJ. You said that you prefer ClockWork Mod. How do you switch to it after you root with the SPRecovery?

Just wanted to thank you for a great guide, worked like a charm. One issue that I'm having is that setcpu autodetects max setting of 800 mhz, any suggestions? I OC my PCs all the time and realize that no chip is the same, but I'm wondering if something else is up.

You just need a custom kernel. Check out the froyo kernels sticky for kernels and the guide to all things root sticky has a guide to flashing kernels

Did you run the command Change directories to your C:\ root directory first?

Nice name bro!

I have a quick question as well.
I have OTA 2.1 on moto droid, since verizon isn't giving us wi-fi hotspot i now need to root it. Should i wait for the OTA 2.2 before doing so?

Thanks
J

I was misinformed - and rightly so.

The FRG22 are leaked builds, and as such, cannot be installed on phones with the stock recovery (IOW, phones that have not been rooted yet and / or have not had an alternate recovery installed on the phone).

If you want you can go through the process of rooting your 2.1, and then install one of the FRG22 builds or the FRG01B builds (I recommend the de-odexed if you plan on doing other things) from Pete's website, as they are already rooted. The rooting process will install an alternate recovery onto your phone, so that will allow you to use these stock files and maintain your tooed status.

Or, you can take you non-rooted 2.1 now and follow the guide here

http://androidforums.com/motorola-d...update-motrola-droid-frg01b-update-1-2-a.html and get 2.2, then follow this guide to root 2.2.

Hope that helps (for real this time)
