Droid X vs Droid 2

1. I don't know too much about the D2. I read the D2 and DX are similar in performance. Hopefully someone else can elaborate.

2. The DX has only been out for a few weeks. It will get 2.2 and will be able to run flash. I expect this phone to get good support for the next year and a half.. at least.

3. People have already rooted the DX. Loading custom ROMs is a different story though because of the bootlaoder. But with root, tethering is available as well as many other good options.

But just saw a tweet from birdman and they fixed the hole in 2.2 for the root. So it is back to square 1.

I did just notice the processor in that leaked Droid 2 training guide. Looks like they share the exact same processor...

Rooting i knew you could do on the Droid X, and i know there's no custom rom loading yet (or maybe ever, i'm new to all this). Sad to see it will be harder to root Froyo, and i would assume Droid 2. Although it would appear someone always finds a way very quickly. I guess the only question is when they'll have Froyo on Droid X. Seems like they'll try to wait as long as possible after Droid 2 releases to force it down more peoples' throats and use it as a major selling point.

BTW, if they do release an update to Froyo for Droid X's (or rather, when), will it overwrite the current root or something?

Yes, you will lose root because they patched the exploit.

I agree that it's more usable... I myself prefer the larger screen.. But that doesn't change the fact that it doesn't gain you any screen real-estate... so it has ZERO effect on the space taken by the on-screen keyboard.

same resolution on a larger screen means bigger keys, and easier typing.

When the froyo 2.2 upgrade comes out for the x, the key is not to rush and install the update, wait for the devs to modify the update so we can remain rooted

Id like to bump this up now that we know exactly what's going on the with the D2. I'm on the fence right about now.

With some of the important issues being addressed with the X and most people having their 30 day return window approaching, what ya gonna do?

The choice has always been clear. Bigger screen vs keyboard. Larger size vs smaller size. Pick what you like best. I also think the D2 color choices are terrible. Fake silver and navy blue. yuk

I was kind of excited when I first heard about the D2, but I already knew that I was still going to stick with the DX. The only other phone that I was even remotely considering getting was the Dinc, but the optical joystick is something that's actually a major turn off for me. I ended up just going with the DX because I simply prefer it overall.

I like qwerty keyboards, but I guess they aren't quite that interesting to me. I'm sure it will be a nice phone, but it isn't for me.

Not trying to hate on the D2 but I think its just more of the same. I was looking for a bigger screen and a thinner form factor in the D2. Its too similar to the D1. I see no reason for D1 owners to get a D2 especially when froyo is on the way to D1.

For what I was looking for in a phone; movies, TV, web, games... the DX was the better option for me.

I thought I would miss the physical keyboard.. but after mastering swype... and BlindType on the way... I do not miss the only thing the D1 or D2 had left to offer.

Droid owners don't say they have no use for the keyboard.. they say they don't use it because it stinks.

For games and heavy texting, a (good) keyboard is great.

Strickly for my personal entertainment, i still can't wait for the day i see some guy with a droid x and a wii mote in public.

Exactly how I feel and what I've mentioned before. The D2 is a tweener phone at best since it's not much of an upgrade over the D1. With the D1, at least the option to overclock, have Froyo, and load custom roms will be more than enough to wait for a phone with FFC and LTE compatible.

The DX has the bigger screen and HDMI out which have been useful to me.

I am probably going to switch from my Droid X to the Droid 2 because I need that physical keyboard. Messaging is such a majority part of my smartphone experience. I just need a phone where I can easily type. I am having a little bit of trouble typing with the Droid X but I am slowly learning. I think it is just the size of the phone that is making it a bit harder. That actually brings me to my next reason and last reason for wanting to switch to the Droid 2, I want a tad bit smaller phone.

Also I hate the size of the spacebar. It's unreasonably tiny. It really annoys me because when I am typing letters that are on the right side of the keyboard and I reach down to quickly press space, I almost always hit the period key. The only problem is that I hated the keyboard for the original Droid. I am hearing that the keyboard has vastly been improved upon so I am going to go play around with it on Thursday and see if I like it.

I looked at the size specs of the D2 and D1 and both phones are almost identical in size.

But did anyone catch this?

D2: Talk: 9.6 hr Standby: 315 hr (13.1 days)
D1:Talk: 6.4 hr Standby: 270 hr (11.3 days)
DX:Talk: 8 hr Standby: 220 hr (9.2 days)

1400mAh battery in the D1, D2 and DX?

Have you tried swipe? I do the same thing with the accidental hitting of the period button instead of space bar though only when I am on landscape mode.

Special Edition of the D2 that looks like R2-D2 and has Star Wars themed content on it. Why didn't they do this for the D1??

Probably because Motorola didn't need to pull out gimmicks when trying to sell the D1.

physical keyboard vs touch screen

which do you prefer...

Physical will always beat software in speed and accuracy. I got used to the Droid keyboard and can surely type much faster on it than on any software keyboard and all friends I text with notice that I reply faster than they can with their software keybooards on Samsung Galaxy S, HTC Desire etc.
