Root unrEVOked Forever is out!

I am a little leery of doing anything that is non-un-doable. Also aren't there more security risks with this. Essentially this is like running a Linux Distro booted to Root. The old way is essentially like running Ubuntu where instead of booting to Root you just use SuperUser commands to allow you to do system level stuff without giving blanket access to everything. With S-off essentially it's like having a Windows level security. Scary thought. I guess though that it sounds cool enough that I kinda want to do it though. I hate having a split mind about these things.

I would feel better about it if someone told me for sure that Assurion will cover it rooted or not.

I just don't get this part of the instructions:

When doing updates, be sure to flash all partitions at the same time. For instance, on Incredible, running a 0.92 hboot and a 2.15 radio with a 2.6.29 Linux kernel will result in the system becoming unusable until reflashed.

So...how can we be sure to flash all partitions at the same time? How do we know for sure that everything is compatible every time we flash a new radio or ROM or kernel?

This is the only thing keeping me from installing. If I could truly wrap my mind around this concept I think I'd be more comfortable.

Sounds like if you update one thing you have to reflash everything else or it will be unstable.

If already rooted through the Unrevoked3 method, do we have to unroot for this or simply save to the sd card and go through the motions again?

Also, would I be losing the wireless tethering and 720p feature that came packaged with my root if I did this?

you are suppose to be rooted and just put it on your sd card and find it with clockwork mod no need to rename it just flash it like a rom or kernel... you will not lose anything jeez its very simple

installed the zip and booting up now.. hoping I don't get a boot loop like the guy above me..... seems to be progressing, and it's on.

This should be kind of nice. I'm running CM6 and installing updates using rom manager has been futile because I've had to toggle off security and install manually, making rom manager 10/10 useless until now. Worse than useless cause I've had to manually find the zip on the sd card, buried 3 folders deep in an obscure folder that rom manager's chosen seemingly arbitrarily. Anyway, this should make flashing roms with rom manager s.i.m.p.l.e.

Indeed. The instructions on unrevoked.com say to use cmd to put the .zip on your sd card and automagically rename it update.zip, but that's needlessly complex. I just placed the zip manually and installed it like any other zip.

This really is not that useful, though, guys. I believe that all this is going to do is permanently turn off signature verification, or whatever it's called, so you don't have to do it manually when you install a new rom or theme or whatever, it really doesn't save you that much work.

it makes things like updating radios painless and making new themes painless and adfree works out the box now... and we can delete anything with root explorer we dont want

I tried this, but I'm still getting the same results. Would it help if I just completely unrooted?

I would definitely try flashing a few different roms to see if it happens with all of them. But if you think it would help to unroot then you can give that a try.

I would also check out this thread at xda developers:

UnRevoked Forever? - xda-developers

Someone over there might have a more specific solution to your problem.

Does this make it easier to go back to the stock radio after having upgraded to the OTA?

Thanks,
Nkk

Hey Iowa I understand your concern. I don't always think unrevoked words everything clearly.

What I think they are trying to say here is that if you have a radio that is not compatible with a certain rom you may have problems. And it is best to flash a compatable radio & rom at the same time.

That's kinda what it sounded like to me too but how do you flash a radio and ROM at the same time? Is there a new set of options that become available to do this in Unrevoked Forever?

Good question, and no it is the same set of options as before. Honestly I think just do one (probably radio first) and than the other. I guess Unrevoked put that "disclaimer" in there to cover themselves in case of anything but I don't think you will have a problem.

And it doesn't sound like these are the things that will "brick" a phone, worst thing that happen is you end up in endless reboots and than you will just have to go into recovery and flash a known working radio with a known working rom. (Like you have now)

But again i wouldn't worry. Most of this stuff is for power users. I am not going to be changing my radio/hboot every other week. And if I do I will make sure it will work out first by checking the reaction on this board.

So, it appears my install of any pb31mimg.zip file is not working, I tried both the radio and the custom splash. Looks like it does something, but the txt scrolls too fast to read and when I reboot, nothing has changed. I check both the radio version and watch the new splash ... nothin.

I don't see anyone else having this issue.

Thoughts?
