Help 2.1 Problems - Issues - Quirks

When I first updated my phone my BT audio turned to crap and I was having horrible lag issues. So I hard reset it and now have horrible battery life. My BT audio still doesn't work in my car (2010 mazda 3).

Does anyone else have a problem in which you sometimes can't type into text boxes? Every now and then I'll try to type and nothing shows up in the textbox, yet Android displays the auto-correction popups in response to what I'm typing. Extremely annoying and there doesn't appear to be any pattern to reproduce the problem.

I've had that problem too. Noticed it most in Handcent. Killed the app in Task Killer and everything worked fine again. Since i hard reset my phone I haven't noticed it at all.

Hi guys. I'm still having problems with my voicemail. When I'm talking to someone at a good volume, I can hear the other person perfectly. But, at that same volume on voicemail, I can barely hear the message. So I have to max the volume and then I can hear properly. My voicemail version is V.5.1.0.24. Any help is appreciated!

I have a different visual voicemail problem. Sometimes I can't hear them at ALL through VVM. They play but, I can't hear through the speaker or the earpiece. Ugh.

You say "sometimes" you can't hear the VVM? ...other times it does work?

I am not able to listen to VVM thru the Bluetooth built into my car. I have to turn the bluetooth off on the phone to listen to a message. I suspect the VVM is played back as a media, rather than as a phone call. Although my car supports BT media, I haven't tried it for VVM. (calls work fine in BT in or outgoing) When I am in my car I generaly answer the phone...no VM is left. So, not being able to listen to VVM thru Bluetooth is not a big deal to me. If needed, I am able to listen to them normaly with the phone at my ear, or by using the speaker phone button on the VVM screen.

Hey, So I am tired of messing with sprint and them telling me the hardware is at fault with the 2.1 update and am ready to flash my phone. Is there a rom out there that is stable, Bluetooth works (Like it did with 1.5), No phone lag, or typing lag ect? This is for my wife, so I would love to load a rom one time and not have to worry about it again.

Thanks ahead of time.

I believe that the Visual Voicemail volume is controlled by the media volume. Check to see if your media volume is turned up and try again.

Thanks, I'll try that.
Is it also possible that there is a limit to the number of VVMs that can be stored on this phone without deleting?

Hey, So I am tired of messing with sprint and them telling me the hardware is at fault with the 2.1 update...

I went around in circles with an Executive Services Representative named O'Rion McCormick who insisted that I exchange the phone for another one. When I asked him if I should just keep returning the phones over and over again since this was a software problem and not a hardware problem his response was:

"I personally have the HTC Hero with the upgrade to Android 2.1. Currently, I have no issues using my device. If it is determined by Sprint that major issues exist with the software of the device, we will partner with the manufacturer to create an update to fix the issue."
If I'm following his line of reasoning correctly, it seems that if one Executive Services Representative at Sprint isn't having problems with his phone then there must be zero problems with the Hero + Android 2.1 for anyone. If there are this many defective phones, then HTC needs to start working on a recall because there seems to be a really high and consistent failure rate (either that or just a large vocal minority of users expressing issues with their phones).

I suppose Sprint probably doesn't want to dig too deeply into troubleshooting these phones, otherwise they might see that a problem really does exist and then have to live up to McCormick's promise to provide a fix.

I believe that the Visual Voicemail volume is controlled by the media volume. Check to see if your media volume is turned up and try again.

I checked that and the Visual Voicemail volume is controlled by the in-call volume. I turned it all the way up and then I could hear it but then on a normal call I could hold the earpiece a foot away from me and still here them. So volume back down to a normal level for me.

Here is my list of what I think desperately needs changing.

The whole contact syncing issue is horrible. Absolutely horrible. There is no way to sync specific groups from google contacts anymore (why remove that?!) making your contact list completely clogged up. I know you can choose to view only specific type of contacts but whenever you do a search for people you get to see ALL contacts. Even the auto added ones I believe. Why is it syncing everything, why does it waste my bandwidth?

So, this wouldn't be so bad if you could choose not to sycn google contacts. I know there are options to disable syncing google contacts. However, these options don't work. I have tried disabling absolutely all syncing but as soon as I add a google account it starts syncing, no matter what. I can see the little syncing icon rotating and clicking the "cancel syncing" button does nothing.

I tried many workarounds but the bottom line seems to be I can either have a clogged up address book or I can choose not to link my google account.
I really don't understand who could make a design like this and think it is good. Sometimes I wonder if developers actually use these phones.

Another, smaller, issue has to do with the stock browser and the google webpage.
Ever since google changed their design I found it quite annoying to search with the stock browser.
I type a sentence and click search.
I now want to change my search somewhat. This means I'll just copy a part of my sentence and change the end.
Woops, can't do it. I can't select only a part of the text in the search field anymore. I can select all but I can no longer fine tune the selection with the trackball.

So these are the two things I noticed. The browser thing is no biggy, but the contacts thing is a huge deal for me. If I knew this is how it worked I wouldn't have bought this phone.

Voice search Interferes with Camera. Voice search turns on when I am trying to focus the camera. I think one of my apps or settings must be triggering this. Anyone else seen this? How can i stop voice search when I want to use the camera??

I have this problem where sometimes after I end a phone call, the audio will not work at all. It won't ring or make alert or application sounds. The only way to fix this is to reboot the phone but even then it still happens.

Am I the only person who has this problem?

I hate this phone. Everytime you call Sprint for assistance, they tell you I need to do a hard reset. This cannot be the only solution. I know if I had to reformat my computer evertime something went wrong, I would just shoot myself.

1. Phone takes like 30 seconds to make a call.
2. MMS stopped working.
3. My email doesnt update unless I hit refresh in each account.
4. I cannot get my exchange account to work with google apps. (I previously had to import my contacts to google and set up an IMAP account on my phone just so I could get email.
5. I'm on my 3rd Hero Phone and it hasnt even been 1 year.

** Worst phone I have ever had. I remember my voice stream phone was better and more stable than this POS and this was back in like 1999.

I've been waiting for the 2.1 update from Sprint, but after reading these posts I think I will stick with 1.5 unless Sprint comes up with a patch or something.
I have a couple of question though,

Is PDAnet working with 2.1?
Can anyone give a good reason to switch to 2.1?

So you can spend more time on this forum and get to be friends with everyone here, while looking for help. :D

Actually, just kidding! Not everyone has had issues with 2.1. In fact, I would bet that there are way more Hero users that are satisfied with it than not. One of my sons has had 2.1 on his Hero since the day it was released, with the (.6) OTA update, and he is very happy with his.

Remember, there are 3 basic types of people who frequent forums.
1. The people with a problem, looking for a resolution.
2. Gracious folks who are knowledgable and want to help others
3. (a distant third place) Trolls, who just want to stir up things.

The folks who hve no issues, rarely frequent forums. (Likely this group is by far the highest percent of Hero users)

Thanks JB,
I guess you are right, but I just don't feel like having to deal with new bunch of new issues with my phone, I'll wait and see how these develops.
After all, does this update make our phone more responsive or easy to use? It doesn't seem like according to all the thread I read so far. May be I'm in the wrong forum, ja, ja.:D

Currently Running 1.5 -
ONLY reason I want to update is to get LauncherPro -
Installed it on my wifes Samsung Intercept and Love it.

Does LP solve the 2.1 Lag Issues ? and other complaints?

BTW - ADW SUCKS on 1.5 - SUPER laggy between screen.

I have found that LP does help with the Lag Issues, but doesn't resolve them 100% I still have a terrible lag when ending a call and trying to make another, but other than that, LP helps.

So I gather there is no fix?

Started this thread in the wrong section got moved and now I find this thread so here is the thread i started:

I've been caught up lately with my evo got it to where I loved it and then froyo happened. Anywho my wifes hero has gotten worse since the launch of the evo and doing the provided updates for it. DUNNO Y Here are the issues: 1 when making a call whether from contacts or a dialed number it takes forever to intiate/connect. 2 screens aren't smooth moving any more very choppy. 3 keyboard lag 4 overall generally slooow. I'm sorry if this info is somewhere search is not my friend right now I'm sick and can't focus just really need to fix it for her due to her job. MUCH thanks Dan

Are any of these problems known to occur when the Hero comes preloaded with 2.1? I have one that I bought last month, and I'm not noticing any serious problems. I have seen the HTC screen once or twice but it took little time to recover. The web is fast, etc.
