Help Droid X navigation trouble

All great info and tips. Thank you.

The fact remains that I was having serious issues with the navigation app until I installed the task killer. I don't have the X loaded up with lots of apps. In fact until Saturday it had only the apps that came on it as delivered new and I have not activated most of them. I did, remove the "city id" files to the extent allowed without root as per guidance from a VZW tech. I added Google Goggles Saturday and that is all. Doesn't quite make sense but it is working and I don't seem to have any unusual battery life issues. It seems good for a long day without a charge. I do use the car charger dock while using the gps nav.

I had the same problem, read somewhere that it is a "feature" of the car dock app launching the Nav app. Was told to close the car dock app and start Nav up from the apps drawer/shortcut. I tried it.... it worked for me. No more closes when running Nav.

sort of similar nav problems here...

nav would quit and dump me back to the home screen, but after a few seconds the nav arrow would reappear in the notification bar. at this point, i could pull down the notify bar and tap the nav line and it would resume as if nothing had happened.

i drove ~300mi over the past couple days and saw this happen dozens of times.

thought it might be roaming notification and/or loss of data causing the problem. not positive, but after some more observation i'm doubting this hypothesis. also thought it might be some other always-updating app killing things. again...after some uninstalls and more paying attention, i'm not so sure.

this is one damn buggy phone. 2.2 can't come soon enough.

Has anybody had this issue with 2.2 installed? I had the same type of issue with 2.1, but haven't used Nav with 2.2.

Absolutely. I disagree with the blunt recommendation that all task killers are bad. I'm simply explaining why task killers can potentially bring undesirable results.

What you are experiencing is a misbehaving app somewhere. So if the task killer fixes your problem and you're happy with that answer, great. Since I'm a pretty curious guy, I'd probably try to use the task killer to pin down the misbehaving app, though.

Seems like a good idea. I need to step up a bit on the learning curve.

Can you explain what/how you got rid of the City ID crap...to the extent allowed without root? Thanks.

Also having the same issue with nav on 2.1. Did not happen for the first 3, weeks last week on long road trip, happened every 5-15 minutes. Did not have task killer installed at the time. Will give that a try to see if I can pin point the issue.

I had my Droid X for almost a month now. I use Navigation twice a day for a total of 2:30 a day to/from work. Very selective about installed apps and widgets, keep them to a minimum, and also run ATK with "safe" auto kill level and "1hr" auto kill frequency. Up until last Friday I never had an issue running Nav app. Since Friday I haven't installed any new apps, except for one widget last night to monitor bat temp and cpu speed, but it was installed after I discovered Nav screen shut down problem.

So basically starting from yesterday morning I'm having the same problem as you guys above. Every 3-5 minutes the Nav screen shuts down and DX goes to home screen. I tried in both Car Dock and w/o Car Dock setting. What I have noticed is following, at the moment of shut down the blue "arrow" indicating Nav application that stays in upper left corner of notification area disappears and so does SAT icon in the upper right corner which is next to BT/3G/bat icons in notification area. It is VERY consistent. EVERY SINGLE time NAV screen disappears I can see the SAT icon disappear and blue arrow NAV icon disappear. After a second SAT icon comes back up and so does blue arrow NAV icon, and I can click on NAV icon either from home screen or from pull-down notification area and NAV app comes back again with all the destination data still in there setup correctly.

Please, everyone who experience the same problem, take a notice if SAT icon disappears. If so, this is a hardware problem or maybe system software problem which periodically shuts down the satellite receiver thus causing NAV map screen shut down. I do not see any freezing of the screen or map.

Can't help you with the city ID stuff, but for the Nav issue try switching to the default blur UI and see if the problem goes away. This is assuming you're using one of the others like LP or ADW.

.

Yes....GOOD QUESTION..... I have no use at all for crap like this that comes with the phone and then without provocation seems to want you to either subscribe or activate the free trial with no available option for a nice simple NO THANK YOU! If you don't do the following it will likely continue to try to rope you in. The free trial is for 2 weeks and then you get charged monthly. This type of garbage (I'm being kind) ought to be outlawed.

On the Droid X:

Got to Settings
Applications
Manage Apps
Menu key (lower left hard key)
select "Filter"
select "All"
select "city id" from list
then select "clear data"

Done !

While this will not remove the app, it will remove the data that triggers it's attempt to interfere with your well being.
Enjoy the freedom!

Damn, disconnected the battery and put it back in and NAV is working fine now. wtf?!? How does it fix a problem? And for how long is it going to be fixed? lol!!!

I'm having the same problem as everyone else. I can't wait to get 2.2. I hope it fixes some of the bugs.

One thought.
Is it set to get a signal from Wi-Fi or GPS? Maybe this is one possible problem? You can set it to do Wi-Fi, 3G or GPS, can't you?? Or am I just nuts .....don't answer that, please.

Just looked and you are right. However i did have my gps enabled but the location by wireless network was enabled as well. Ill try it both way tomorrow

To clarify im going to use navigation with wireless and gps enabled and then just gps and see what happens

So i drove about 60 mile through mountains etc where i had no cell service, same route when my nav would mess up.
It worked like a charm but three things were different.
1. I did a factory reset
2. Rooted
3. Was not in the car dock
