Android 2.0 on Hero - HTC, this is an outrage!

I'm with the OP.

Sense is HTC's baby so they should know it inside out. I am bored of waiting for the 2.0 update that is already commercially available already.

Come on HTC. We took a leap of faith by investing a lot of money and patience in ther Hero. We appreciate that you're working on it - but you MUST have a release date by now. It's simple project management.

Simple project management for phone companies is a lifecycle of phones for about 3-6 months then a new phone released and if you want an upgrade - you will buy a new one :)

So let's thank HTC for working on our phone and be patient)))

What rubbish.

By "project management" I mean that HTC will have engineers on this project. They will have deadlines and schedules to work to, and the whole thing will be managed.
They don't just say "oh, we'll get started on it sometime. It'll be done when were finished"

This is an international trader - not some guy in a shed.

It has nothing to do with project management and everything to do with the bad PR that will result if the give out a date and then miss it. The ranting that results from slipped release dates will make the whiny, self-righteous and utterly, utterly clueless rant from the OP look like a drop in the ocean in comparison.

And even then... why do you need to know the release date so badly? It's not going to make it get here any quicker. What exactly is going on in your life that requires you to plan it in advance around a firmware upgrade to your phone? Do you have am important bluetooth file transfer scheduled for 22nd december or something?

Just lol!))))

i like to think that htc are taking there time with the update because they want to get it right. After all the Hero is their flagship android device at the moment. If i was htc i'd focus all my attention on the hero and develop it as a brand.

on the other hand, maybe they see windows mobile as the future and are just releasing the hero update because they feel like they have to.

Of course I want to know when it's coming out.

Do you just float along in life, oblivious to what's coming up? Do you understand PR? Are you involved in PR, or marketing?

They said 2.0 was being released for good reason. With 2.0 already commercially available, they HAD to say something. I really don't see why they don't have a release date. It's just good practice and good PR!
Nobody is saying that they shouldn't include contingency in there, or time for testing - that's common sense.

If you don't care when it comes out, then why bother to even comment on a thread with a release date as a subject? Some people aren't bothered, some are.

I think it's a bit slack of HTC to say that it's coming, but have no idea when.

I feel like I've been in the vinegar strokes for weeks! ;)

They didn't tie into any agreement with us about providing this after care, or system update. If they did I would fully agree with you, but they didn't. They simply do not have to put additional pressures on themselves to reach a deadline and possibly handing over a defective product by trying to reach said deadline.

I understand your frustration in wanting the update, but honestly you are wrong in this instance.

I think that's also a bit slack.

I'm not talking about literal or contractual responsibilities here. I'm talking about what is common practice in the marketplace.
Smartphones get updates - it's part of why they're smart I guess.
We are all (for the most part) early adopters of the Android system. My personal opinion is that HTC should have a little more respect for us.

Updates are as important for them as they are for us. If they don't keep the "flagship" device updated, then it suffers (as does their brand).

My only annoyance with this is that any project of this type is undertaken to a schedule and a plan.
I would have thought that a little more clarity on an expected date would not be difficult.

If you guys remember the last hero update was first released in denmark... and on the denmark htc support there is a rom update dated the 27th November.

Ive not downloaded it myself but if anyone is from denmark maybe they could let us know? Of course I may be completely wrong and it may be nothing.....

I feel like I'm getting a pissy here, but that's not my intention.

I am a self-confessed control freak, and there's no quicker way to annoy me than to tell me to wait.

Just eager to have my Hero running the latest schizzle.

Installationsvejledning:
ROM version : 2.73.405.6

My knowledge of Danish saying to me that it's something new, but don't think it has Android 2.0

The update from 27th is because they messed up some billing for MMS for one phone company. The update was just a fix for the APN for that specific provider (Telenor).

On a side note, the released version from September which put the phone to Danish etc, was so faulty and buggy that you cant run it in danish language unless you want to have weird signs as translations. HTC Nordic CEO promised an updated to fix all that in 2 days - thats 3 weeks ago and nothing have been released yet.

I do however take this as they (HTC Nordic) may have been told no to release an update because 2.x was on its way - close on its way - Or it could just be bad judgment on internal procedures yet again from their side :S

I really don't get threads like this.

2.0 is coming and we want it to be right. So be patient.

It's not like we have a useless brick which doesn't function with 1.5 is it?

I don't know about you other Hero users, but I think it's an outrage that we still do not have Android 2.0 (or at least 1.6) update for our Hero!

This device is supposed to be one of the most powerful Android devices, I went out an bought it for more than $500, and still have to use the old 1.5 version while more than 75%(!) of android devices already have Android 2.0 and 1.6.
This is according to androidandme.com:

I also want to use Google navigation, install new apps and enjoy all the new features.
It seems that HTC is ignoring its current clients, who bought their devices not so long ago.

I call for every Hero user to respond to this thread, let's create a petition and send it to HTC.

WE WANT ANDROID 2.0 RIGHT NOW!

Firstly, I'm confused. Are you saying you want Android 2.0 before it's finished? You want buggy software on your phone?!?!?

Secondly, "WE" do not all want Android 2.0 "RIGHT NOW". I, for one, want it when it's ready.

If you're gonna complain about something, try doing some research on it first. And no, that doesn't mean digging up charts about other handsets.

Calm down lol. If u really dig down into the guts of HTC Sense you'll see that most of the "new" features of Android OS 2.0 are already on the Hero. Actually it seems like Google combined features of the Sense UI with MotoBlur to come up with Android OS 2.0....well except for Google Nav. But when the Sense Eclair update does drop its gonna make stock 2.0 look pathetic. Patience is a virtue
ps. WOW not only are there still people using 1.0, there are more people using 1.0 than 1.1? WTF? LOL

agreed, I'd take my sense UI over stock 2.0 any day. all the functions my bf is looking for from his droid is built into the cupcake sense ui already. just wait for them to make sense ui even better with 2.1. what's the rush? I want them to get it completely ready, bc if they do it right it will make 2.0 look like a beta release. sense ui on cupcake pretty much already does.

Anybody given any thought that the only announcement we have had about android 2.0 is through Twitter and u tube ?.

Nothing from the official HTC site.
Which makes me think that their is going to be no update for the hero.
Hope I'm proved wrong.

Now you are just being stupid.

If you don't release a sketchy ETA then no one is majorly disappointed, just wait FFS.

But my point is: why would/should it be a sketchy ETA?

Overestimate. Whack a load of contingency time in there. There must be a PLAN though, and a schedule. There isn't some team of stoners sat around scratching their collective arses and doing it as fast as they can (dude).

I am hearing December the 11/12th from a few different sites. Granted; that could be from the same B/S source - but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm not outraged by any stretch, but I am growing impatient.

could you please explain what exactly you will get out of Android 2.0? Google nav and maybe some hardware optimization? Besides that what benefits are you looking for in terms of a sense UI built on 2.0. I mean, it's one thing if you're running stock android then yes 1.5 is missing a lot of the things 2.0 has. But from my understanding, Sense was made to put these things in place. 2.0 seems to give people with stock android some of the stuff that people with sense UI on 1.5 have had all along

if I'm wrong please correct me and explain what exactly you'll be getting out of having sense on 2.0 besides being able to say that you have android 2.0...

I really want multiple account support in a big way.
I want the app store to clamber out of the stone age.
I want nav app (although I bet us limeys will have to wait, as always!)

I want, I want, I want.

I'd have vanilla android on 2.0 over sense on 1.5 any day.
