Bigger apps like Mozilla Fennec are the future, not the exception. If you are expecting a full desktop browsing experience with Flash and other plugins and a full rendering engine, you will need to get used to desktop-like memory footprints. I expect that the full version of Mozilla Fennec will have a Firefox-like memory requirement, which will push our 512MB of RAM very hard as well as occupy lots of internal memory.
You are right on the money there, and with 1GHz powerful processors and dedicated graphics chips, you are going to see apps getting bigger, better, more graphical, and more complicated - not smaller and simpler. If you have hardware that can do more, the software will follow. "If you build it, they will come." Anyways, the 2GB might not be a limitation for most users now, but it's a safe bet it will be. And your max on the DX, for example, is 6GB higher (40GB) versus the max with the Fascinate (34GB). That's a true limitation between devices any way you cut the cake. That's a couple of TV shows less, a few thousand pictures less, and fewer total eBooks or music files you can fit on it.
Froyo basically doubled my X's battery life. I can go almost but not quite 48 hours unplugged on a single charge with the extended battery and Froyo. And that's not letting the phone sit there unusued for 48 hours, that's surfing the web, installing apps, listening to bTunes, making voice calls, reading Engadget and Facebook, etc. I don't stream from Pandora or any other Internet radio but that's the only thing I don't do on my X.
You should try your X with Froyo and see the difference between it and the Incredible or any Galaxy S. My friend hates how his Incredible can't make it through a single day of moderate use, though he doesn't seem to be aware there is an extended battery for it which fits in the stock battery space.
With Froyo hitting the Incredible, it should improve as well, but it's great to hear the DX improvements are substantial. Good news, and good signs of continued support on our phones' OS.
So, really. What's the the general opinion here? X or the Fascinate? I have the X. 2 days left in the 30 day window.
Tough choice. All I can say is that I was initially skeptical of the Droid X, and leaning towards just waiting on the Fascinate. The more I read, the more research I did, and the more ways they are crippling the Fascinate or it just plain comes up short (less RAM, less internal storage, Bing - which is actually just a minor gripe, less battery life, and no HDMI out) the more I leaned towards the Droid X. I finally ordered on last night. Unfortunately your window is almost up.
I'd rather have the 8GB over a camera flash ANY DAY. And I'd rather have the capability for HDMI out while playing videos and photos than analog out ANY DAY. The DX has both those features.
But I'm not you. I just wanted to give you my thoughts, since reading the thoughts, reviews, and feedback from others has been essential in helping me make my own decision. You may decide that the things I LOVE about the DX are things you hate, or like better on the Fascinate. If you're preferences are like mine, than maybe you'll be best served with what you got.
