Froyo results RUU Leak vs Official OTA release

lol true story, Frisco became a God over in the Eris threads for encouraging those to factory restore upon the OTA2.1 arrival. I would STRESS this same encouragement going from 2.1 to 2.2, to the point that it actually surprises me that Verizon doesn't suggest doing so upon any problems, or make it a wipe install.

And just to add to this everyone, a member here posted in one of the other threads that they had some choppy scrolling on the home screen after the OTA to 2.2, did a factory reset and now the phone is humming.

I'll try to find the post, but I cannot even remember which 2.2 thread its in!!
I agree a factory reset is going to wind up "fixing" choppy Incredibles.

I want to keep most stuff. I don't want to have to reinstall apps and junk. Between the internal storage and the SD card, do I have to back up both?

The SD card goes untouched, but the internal gets wiped completely, so a back will be needed if you want to save some stuff.

This is said to be the exact same thing but as mention previously OTA will update RUU wipes.

Yes it is the same version of everything as the OTA.

However, it WILL wipe your phone...though it is recommended to wipe after the OTA anyways. People running the OTA are having slowdowns and stuttering, that is fixed by a factory wipe.

For apps you should be able to use appbrain ( I don't personally use it. I'm not a huge app person, but from what I've heard of it, it should do the trick. Keep in mind any data in the apps would be lost though, you will be back at a clean install. ), and contacts you can use the built in backup assistant. For pictures, video, etc. just transfer them off to your computer before you wipe.

If your contacts are linked to your Google account, they'll be fine. They'll be synced back to your phone when you setup your phone after the 2.2 install.

Using the instructions on that page and the instructions here, last night I updated from stock 2.1 (a clean install since I needed to revert to stock, as I had previously rooted my phone with Unrevoked3) to the RUU leaked on 8/26. It was painless. The actual process is surprisingly easy, but setting up my phone after the fact took some time because I forgot to do an updated full Titanium backup before I reverted to stock 2.1.

My quadrant score is 1127. I didn't test before I updated to 2.2, so I have nothing to compare this against. However, I will say that my DINC is a bit snappier - I really didn't think would be possible, but it is. And I am happy. Very happy.

If its saved as "phone" then you will need to back them up. I believe Backup Asst does that for you automatically as long as you got everything setup correctly and using it.

This is why I save mine under "Google" it always saves and restores when I plug in my email adress on setup. Wiped three time in the last few days and it worked as a charm!

To be safe, go to contats > Menu > Import/Export > Export > Phone > and then let it do its thing.

When you get done with the update, do the same thing but IMPORT to GOOGLE (NOT TO PHONE)

I am trying to install the RUU update but it cannot find the phone. The USB cable is connected to the phone and to the computer. In windows, I can see the two drives from the phone. I think it has something to do with the drivers. Does anyone know where I can download the correct drivers so the ruu will find the phone? Thanks!!

I'm pretty sure this is all you need plus the RUU exe file. Easier than I thought. This download took a little while with the install and everything. It's a good idea to restart your computer after you install drivers. Here:

I did the RUU earlier and got a 1275 quadrant score. My phone has no issues and seems alot faster.

Megauploader is pretty slow however, the above linked exe will download a lot faster.

Just connect the phone to your computer and run the EXE from your computer.

I believe I had the phone set to Disk Drive and Enable USB Debugging.

If you get a USB Error install HTC Sync.

I agree, since how on earth would a carrier expect people to be trouble free with current data and apps when going from something as framework dramatic as 2.1 to 2.2? Very understated update increment of 2.1 to 2.2.

Seems by default, the device would be sluggish with some cache, setting and app issues unless starting with a clean slate.

Please keep in mind that all framework changes up until 2.2 were update refreshes of the original. 2.2 was more dramatic of a change. Kind of like going from Windows 95 to XP.

When your phone gets to the HTC Logo, and waits for bootloader, let it time out, don't unplug ur phone, leave it at the HTC logo and open the RUU installer again. Worked for me.

I think the best analogy is the OTA is like a Windows 7 Upgrade from Windows Vista. The RUU is a clean install of Windows 7. The clean install will almost always perform better.

Well I can say that I had a rooted 2.1, then installed a rooted 2.2 (built from OTA see xda site) and decided to be brave/foolish? - didn't wipe anything. Phone came back up alive and 99% of my settings were as I left them and the phone runs great.

With my Eris, resetting cache on a number of apps was required to prevent FC but not here, it's all good.

Many have already posted that the RUU wipes the phone memory, but leaves the SD card alone.

I posted earlier about having to factory reset and activate because of this problem and I will have to say since then, not one issue, speed is great, memory, the 720p camera, everything runs smooth.

Well I decided to bite the bullet and go the RUU route, not because I couldn't wait for the OTA but because I knew I was going to end up doing a wipe/reset afterwards, so I figured since the RUU install did that anyway it was the way to go.

Very painless. The worst part was getting the USB drivers right for the Inc...I had "manually" installed them awhile ago so I could play with Eclipse and the ADK, but the work around for the the windows drivers posted on FLEXJUNK didn't seem to work for the RUU exe. The solution is to install HTC Sync and it will upgrade the USB drivers.

Used Astro to backup my Apps and Backup Assistant for my contacts. Both worked great.

Very noticable performance increase. Quadrant went from around 550 to 1139. Linpack from 5.56 MFOPS to 31.504.

If you can't stnd the wait for the OTA or if you plan on doing a wipe/reset then I suggest using the RUU.

Oh, and thanks to the countless members that posted multiple tips and install directions!!

As mentioned, being the same update you shouldn't see the OTA at all.

HOWEVER: If you do get the update, DENY it! It is the same update, and I can see if acting like installing an OTA twice which has caused major problems in the past.

But since it asks you every 30 minutes wouldn't that be a pain in the A or am I missing something?
