Help DROID Incredible random restart/reboot problem

I don't know for sure. I'm hoping the updated radio and/or Froyo update will fix the problem.

Do you mean the Froyo update? or another OTA?

And what makes you think it will be fixed? Is it because the updated radio fixes the issue, and is included in the new froyo update?

Serious question, not being smartass

This better be one of their fixes in 2.2 for the Incredible or I will not be happy.:(

Dang random reboots... I mine as well go back to Windows 98 where I had to reboot 25 times a day.

I'm not making it up, happens a lot. Went on cruise, if i had not turned off mobile network, phone would keep rebooting

Having the same random reboots as described in this thread. The phone worked fine since June 2010 until about a week ago. Since then, the phone will reboot and then get stuck at the load screen, requiring a battery pull. I did a factory reset but the reboots still happen.

I believe I have narrowed my issue down to the mobile internet. I turned off mobile internet and the phone worked fine 24 hours. Wifi was still on with no problems. I turned mobile internet back, surfed CNN, and it rebooted within 10 minutes.

I turn it back off and use wifi, no issues.

I am located in Huntsville, AL

I am having the same issue with my Incredible. Worked great for about two months with no real issues. Rebooted itself maybe once every two weeks. About a month ago it went into a reboot loop for no apparent reason. I think that I got it out of the loop by going directly to ATK when it started up and then killing the apps.... and then opening ATK again and then killing the apps again (never seems to work the first time). Since this first occurance the reboot loop happens about once per week now. I've noticed that it seems to be trying to sync when it happens and ATK is listed in the notification tab at the top when the reboot occurs. I wonder if there is some kind of conflict between ATK and automatic sync? It really seems to happen at random. I don't see a real trend.

From what I've read, calling Verizon just leads to replacement phones that don't work any better because they don't seem to know what is going on. No need to call them if they know less than us. Very frustrating because I love the phone and I can't go for weeks without a phone while they try to figure it out. I don't have a land line anymore.

Any official news on this?

A misconfigured ATK may be the cause. Make sure you set ATK to not auto terminate tasks and see if the problem reoccurs.

Note that the random reboot issue is different than the reboot loop issue. Most people who had the reboot loop problem had to get a replacement phone. Before you return your phone, you might as well try a hard reset (after backing up any data). Make sure you login to Gmail and export your contacts to a file to be safe.

I have the same problem with my incredible. My first one was rebooting on me so I had it replaced but my replacement does the same thing. So I contacted verizon support and they just told me to do *228 and try a hard reset. Of course that didn't do anything so I contacted HTC e-mail support. They gave me same advice as verizon but I told them that this troubleshooting method is not effective. Eventually after 4-5 weeks my support ticket was given to an escalations team and I was told that the upcoming update should fix this problem. I am hoping that this is true.

think20: that is good news because the update is apparently coming soon!

Intrepid: ATK isn't configured to auto close things.

My phone has gotten worse. I can't even use it anymore. Guarunteed to reboot within 5 minutes of use every time I try it. Only way to stop it is to pull the battery and let it sit for about 30 minutes. The Reboot option on the boot loader doesn't fix it, ATK doesn't fix it, pulling the battery and putting it right back in doesn't fix it. I'm on vacation today and my phone is useless on the trip. Talked to Best Buy in the town that I'm in now and they told me to take it up with Verizon (I bought the phone from Best Buy), claim they only handle warranty if I purchased a "plan" with them. Does this sound right? No sign of Froyo. Anybody get the 2.2 and has it fixed the issue? Times up for me, update now or I'm gonna need a new phone or something.

So on my trip the phone did the reboot loop every time I tried to use it. The phone was effectively useless. I'm back on Central Indiana now and I called Verizon this morning. I told them that my phone keeps rebooting every five minutes of use. They said that there was a known issue in the south that should have been fixed but the would try replacing my phone because i'm not in an area with a reported issue Columbus, IN area. Well... this is where it gets interesting. After hanging up with verzion I've tried all morning to try and get the phone to reboot and it won't do it! Thinking back... I've come to realize that it has only ever rebooted while out of my home area or roaming. I'm affraid that a new phone will not fix it and I won't realize that it isn't fixed until I travel out of my area. So I'm going to probably refuse delivery of this new phone now that no longer clear that the phone is the problem.

My previous "dumb" phone had issues on trips as well. The battery would get hot and dead in about an hour while it constantly searched for available towers. My guess is that this is related. Perhaps the phone is overheating internally? I've noticed that the phone gets pretty hot as it is in the reboot loop. Either way, I'm now going to go to the Verzion store and see if they can upload 2.2. Then I'm going to leave my home area and see if it still does it. If so, I'm going to either wipe the phone and try again, and/or disable roaming data and see what happens.

Anyone else have any luck? Any sightings of 2.2?

This is a bug with the phone and it only happens in certain areas. I just manually flashed to 2.2 and I'll let you know if my random reboot problem is resolved. The 2.2 Over the Air update is being rolled out as we speak. You should get a notification on your phone within the next 1 to 14 days as they are updating phones in batches.

Saturday Took my Incredible to local verizon store here in Alabama as I had several random reboots. He could not reproduce. Siad I needed Advanced task Killer which he installed. Sunday it started rebooting in a loop and the only way I could stop it was to remove battery. I then removed ATK as I've heard I don't need it and I removed a Startup Cleaner app.

Called the special verizon network number from thsi forum and he said do a hard reset.

Is this the only approach. How does one best backup installed apps and such before a hard reset as I haven't had to reset. My contacts and calendar are through Google but i do have numerous apps I've downloaded like Dropbox, Battery left, etc. Is the only approach to make a list of apps I've downloaded, do a hard reset and download them again OR is there a backup app that will fully restore apps and screens after a hard reset?

I think VZW is blowing smoke.

If the phone reboots in a loop, it is usually defective. Random reboots are different than reboot loops. I would wait to see if it happens again. If it does, you can try a reset. If that doesn't fix it, you need a new phone. If you want, you can wait for the Over the Air update that is being sent to all phones now. It will take 1 - 14 days to receive. I have no idea if it will fix this.

Install AppBrain App Market http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.appspot.swisscodemonkeys.apps and create an account at AppBrain - the best Android apps and games on the Android market. It will keep track of all your currently installed apps. You can then reinstall them using the app and online control panel. On the website, be sure to copy your installed apps to another folder before you syc with the phone (Select All, Add to List, Create New List).

I also recommend you use MyBackup Pro http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.rerware.android.MyBackupPro to backup your apps and some settings (but not all). You should also write down the app names as a final precaution.

Finally, You must login to Gmail using your PC or Mac and export your contacts to the gmail file. Save it to your desktop for safe keeping. If something goes wrong, you can always import them back into gmail online and than sync your phone.

Note: There is no charge to reinstall apps you purchased if you use the same gmail account.

Mine reboots several times per day and I'm in N Calif. It will reboot if the battery is almost dead which is poor firmware behavior. It's the times when the battery is good that are worrisome. This might be related to signal strength as has been noted on other messages but mine has rebooted under good signal conditions.
I hope Froyo will fix this issue :(

I am in the San Francisco Bay Area and had the reboot loop when I try to use google navigation inside my car, and even when listining to Last.fm, unistalled several apps, I will let the radio play for at least couple hours, and tomorrow will test navigation again, will post if that made any difference.

P.S. Still waiting for Froyo.

Went to lunch, I had maps application open, and playing music using last.fm, and was browsing using facebook app, and after 40 minutes my phone rebooted, forgot to say that I had set my network preferences to "home" as recommended by somebody else in this forum, I will wait for froyo update, if same problem occurs after that, will go to verizon and complain.

I'm in the Lake Tahoe area. Mine had never had this problem until this afternoon, but now it's rebooting over and over again. At first it was a few minutes in between, but now it's almost instantaneous after start-up. The phone does not feel hot to the touch, nor is the indicator light flashing green/red like it did when it got too hot before, so I don't think it's a heat issue? Or am I wrong to rule it out?

Sorry for the nooby question: are there viruses that could be causing this? I tried to install an anti-virus, but it won't stay up long enough.

Edit: no root, no froyo

Edit 2: The signal is bad in my office, but usually has 1 bar. Phone calls are choppy, however. Still, it's never had this problem before.

Edit 3: To elaborate, I've had the phone since mid-July and never had it reboot once. I bring it to the office every day, where I suspect it has the same low signal. Does it make sense/match a pattern where it worked fine for a substantial period, then developed a problem?
