Help DROID Incredible random restart/reboot problem

I'm in the Lake Tahoe area. Mine had never had this problem until this afternoon, but now it's rebooting over and over again. At first it was a few minutes in between, but now it's almost instantaneous after start-up. The phone does not feel hot to the touch, nor is the indicator light flashing green/red like it did when it got too hot before, so I don't think it's a heat issue? Or am I wrong to rule it out?

Sorry for the nooby question: are there viruses that could be causing this? I tried to install an anti-virus, but it won't stay up long enough.

Edit: no root, no froyo

Edit 2: The signal is bad in my office, but usually has 1 bar. Phone calls are choppy, however. Still, it's never had this problem before.

Edit 3: To elaborate, I've had the phone since mid-July and never had it reboot once. I bring it to the office every day, where I suspect it has the same low signal. Does it make sense/match a pattern where it worked fine for a substantial period, then developed a problem?

Many people are saying that is known issue with verizon where they blame "incompatible cell towers" I had mine since mid may and never had this problem either, until two weeks ago, when I noticed that started doing some random reboots, and then sometimes will be stuck in a reboot loop. (showing the htc screen, then turning off again) most of the times it will do a loop reboot for 3 times, but there was an instance were it keept on loop reboot, for about 15 minutes, nothing I could do since I was driving, I am still waiting for froyo, having my "high hopes" that this will fix it, but if it doesn't, then I will go to Verizon and complain about it.

Sigh, thanks myh510. Mine's been doing it for over 90 minutes now. It got stuck in one quick reboot loop as described, but mostly it's just it starts, stays on for 15 seconds to 2 minutes, then reboots. I took the battery out for 30 min to see if cooling would work, and no dice. I'll try again on the drive home where reception is better. How very frustrating.

Update (in case anyone but me is interested): My wife had her phone shut down today, but only twice. It happened while she was at the grocery store, so presumably bad signal. It had never happened to her before that she's aware of though. The local VZW store's phone has been busy for 30+ minutes, maybe it's a local problem. Will post again if I get through to anyone.

And update: talked to someone at the store, they immediately said come in and have it replaced for a new one. :-/ We'll see what happens tomorrow...

I had that restart problem and got the update last night and SO FAR had no more restarts...hope it stays that way???

Update: Well this is just odd. Got home from work, and my wife's phone had started restarting all the time, as long as she's been the middle of the house where reception is bad. In the bedroom/near a window, stays running indefinitely. Also, there are two reception "holes" on my drive home from work. My phone restarted just after driving through both of them. Also, I work about 20 miles away from home, and there's a mountain in between the two, so I suspect the two locations must be serviced from different cell towers.

My wife and I both ordered and received our Inc's on the same days - late June and mid July, respectively. Neither of us had seen this at all before yesterday, not once. Neither have received the OTA, and neither has root. It is so weird that this started up almost simultaneously, but doesn't seem to be a universal problem in the area.

Heading to the store tomorrow to pick up replacements. I'm debating whether I'll ask them to give me an X/2 instead of another Inc, since this seems like this is far from a unique problem.

Update: I got the Froyo update, and guess what, I have the same problem again, now even in between the call, now I am calling Verizon to complain about it, so verdict, Froyo wont fix the reboot loop problem.

Second Update: After updating to Froyo, as soon as I open an application and start browsing, phone will shut down and do reboot loop. Called Verizon, was unable to get to the "Smart Phone department" but was able to talk to a woman, and she never heard about this problem, and told me to try to factory reset the phone, not doing it yet, will go to the Verizon store and see what they have to say about it.

Froyo did not fix my reboot loop issue. Neither did hot or cold boot or restoring it to factory. phone started doing it near home. Just got a replacement phone. Hopefully it will work.

My issue is just seeing the phone reboot out of nowhere. Actually i dont even know if it is rebooting, or just reloading the UI because it is super fast. I see the HTC white screen, then its back on.

It appears to be happening when i am home, which is a VERY low signal area, and the phone sitting idle. It doesnt happen often, as i am not there very often. I noticed it maybe 3 times this week.

Is this the same thing everyone else is experiencing? or are we talking about different issues

Edit, DAMNIT! The second i posted this i looked down and did something on my phone, it froze for few seconds then rebooted. I am at work now in a decent signal area.

I did however notice that NewsRob was syncing in my status bar, which i am becoming more and more suspicious of, see this thread:
http://androidforums.com/incredible-support-troubleshooting/164274-reboots-freezes-newsrob.html

Can you guys chime in there if you also have it installed?

I don't have NewsRob, but I suspect my phone rebooted while I was asleep, even though I just updated to 2.2, because when I went to Battery Use, it said 2 hours since last unplugged when it had been more like 8 hours.

Damn.

I have disabled newsrob, and will update to 2.2 any day now.

If i see another reboot, my next step will be to do a factory reset, leave it with no apps and check for reboots.

If i see another damn reboot at that point, so help me god ... lol

I flashed to 2.2 on Sunday. So far no random reboots. I will have to wait a week to be sure, but so far so good.

Hi, my advice to you all is, if you are having a lot of restarts whatever you do dont update the phone to Froyo. I was having a lot of random restarts and even some looping but I could use the phone. I took it to Verizon this morning (oddly it had just started offering up the update this morning which I had been refusing). The guy said to take it home, plug it in, update it and it would probably fix it. Well, it made it so much worse. now the phone is completely unusable and loops and loops over and over and over. Have taken the battery out probably 20 times to stop it. And it never ends anyway. Took it to Verizon like that and guess what. Now I have to wait til Tuesday to get a new one. Yay, get to go back to my old hobbled EnV Touch for the holiday weekend. Good times. So the moral is, dont update it whatever you do if you want it to work at all (if you already had problems)

As a final step before returning your phone, you may want to consider doing a factory reset. Be sure to backup your contacts and write down your installed apps (or use AppBrain): Install AppBrain App Market http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.appspot.swisscodemonkeys.apps and create an account at www.appbrain.com It will keep track of all your currently installed apps after you sync the app on your phone. You can then reinstall them using the app and online control panel. On the website, be sure to copy your installed apps to another folder before you syc a wiped phone (Select All, Add to List, Create New List).

How to Backup Contacts: All contacts should be at www.gmail.com While at gmail.com, be sure to export your contacts to a file as a backup before syncing a wiped phone: More Actions, Export, All Contacts, Google CSV format.

How to Factory Reset: Menu, Settings, SD & Phone Storage, Factory Data Reset, Reset Phone and Internal Storage.

Reset a phone If the phone won't start properly: With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button (continue to hold the VOL DOWN button). Wait for the screen with the 3 Android images to appear, and then release the VOLUME DOWN button. Press VOLUME DOWN to select CLEAR STORAGE, and then press POWER. When asked to confirm, press VOLUME UP.

From a Working Phone:

It looks like to me that CPU overheats, that's what what cause endless rebooting, I have the same problem too, When I'm in the car I usually put it in front of AC if it start rebooting, it cools it down. That's not a solution, but it's better then nothing. :(

Well, its hard to back up anything while it is just restarting over and over so am thinking I could try the factory reset but not sure it will do any good. It WAS working to some extent but when it heats up after just a short amount of use it starts the endless loop. This morning I actually was able to start it and delete almost all the apps in case something there is pissing it off. It force closes everything that I try to run that didnt come with the phone. Thought I would reactivate it since it seemed to be sort of working so that I could redownload the apps to see if they worked (had already reactivated my old phone). Website wouldnt do it for some reason so I called. They reactivated the droid and just as I was about to test call with it the endless loop resumed. So I went back to my old phone once again. I think it is a heat issue.

PS I wonder if with Froyo on there if I can hook it up to wifi to get the apps back on there. But to what end I guess... will just fail when it warms up.

So I never really had an issue of reboots until recently, before I actually updated to froyo (week and a half or so) I started getting some random reboots. Now I have been having some major problems, I am not sure if it is related to froyo or not, but i suddenly am getting a lot of more reboots, and when it does it will sometimes get stuck in a cycle of reboots and just keep going and going. Tonight it literally just kept rebooting over 10 times. I battery pulled multiple times and still was doing the same thing. Is there a reason this could be happening?
Yes I have done factory reset since install of 2.2, and actually right when i installed and did factory reset it got stuck in this cycle.

I have talked to verzion and they could not make it reboot so they said they could not do anything at the moment but put a note on the account
thanks for the help!

I had the same problem. Random reboot since pate May, which increased to continual reboots by last week. Finally fed up I did a full manual reset. I lost all of my apps but it compl etely fixed the problem. 2 days later on Friday morning, the Froyo OTA was finally offered and I excepted the upgrade. Since then I've slowly been adding the apps I use most. I haven't had a single random reboot since the reset.

Now I know you said that you did a reset. But I'm convinced it was an app that was causing this, just not sure which one. I've gone from 400 apps down to under 100.

I'm very happy with Froyo and very happy to have the random reboot behind me. Hope that helps.

Well I have maybe 25 apps so if it is this then I could probably narrow it down, but some reboots started happening right after the factory reset before I added anything.

The only app i have that "starts up" with the phone which is when it seems to do this the most is battery lite.

It seems like my phone cant really get too warm anymore. Im hitting like 109degrees and it seems like it triggers it to rebot. But I hit these degrees just by using good maps and navi ect. Which also dont seem to run well on 2.2.

Could very well be a hardware failure, which is unfortunately not uncommon. I'm on a warranty replacement now because my previous Incredible suffered the boot loop issue.

Ya I am thinking its hardware because it seems like im always doing something different when it happens. Cant seem to pinpoint a specific app that makes it do it.

Well I called tech support and bitched. They are sending me out a refurb they said it was most likely hardware related if ive already done with factory reset.

It sucks to hear about the continued problems everyone is having.

I was only having the occasional (2-3x/day) reboots, and I'm probably about to jinx it, but since the Froyo update my phone hasn't rebooted once. Maybe I just got lucky, but I'm up to 108hrs and counting. I haven't changed my usage pattern at all, so we'll see how stable it is going forward.

I have major random reboots issue in the last 2 weeks (got my phone 2 days after launch and never had an issue until now) I would go thru cycles of constant reboots. Even battery pulling didn't help. I called Verizon today and they are shipping me out a refurb. Pretty disappointing.

Is there any way that the battery im using is causing this? (siedo). My phone seems to be getting warmer since the update and i dunno what else would be the cause of this...
