Help DROID Incredible random restart/reboot problem

I've had this issue a couple of times. The first time it flashed the HTC splash screen right after initial boot of 2.2 (I received the OTA on Sep 9th). And it has happened three or four times afterward. Usually when I activate my phone from sleeping only once when I was actively using the device. Although it's occurrence is very intermittent and infrequent I've already assumed that it is due to my use of No Lock, but I have no actual proof.

I thought so as well, initially. Uninstalling widgetlocker didn't solve the problem.

I don't think it's FROYO either though. This was happening when I was running 2.1 unrooted. I've never used any task killers either. Seems like there is no common denominator here.

I think that whoever said the problem is heat related is correct!

It seems that the problem is the phone gets really hot, and shuts down for safety. It then tries to reboot, but it is still too hot, so it shuts back down. It does this until it eventually cools off enough to stay on.

To me, it isn't a software compatibility problem. I wiped my phone, but it still did it almost immediately following the reset. It can't be a problem with the 2.2 update, because people have had this problem since Launch. I think the reason the problem has sort of resurfaced is because the download and installation of the update is very intense, using lots of processing power, causing the phone to heat up.

This is just my theory though.

That may be the case. I've rooted my phone and I'm now using SetCPU (will not work unless you are rooted). This app will automatically lower the clock speed if the temperature exceeds a certain threshhold (I set mine to 44.9C.). I'm also using the Virtuous ROM. Virtuous is a custom ROM which is a mostly-stock ROM based on the official Froyo release with only essential changes made. I recommend it to those who are comfortable with rooting their phone.

Note: This guide is for rooting Android 2.1 phones only - if you have the OTA update to Froyo 2.2, you can not root using this guide at this time. However, they are working on an update to Unrevoked which will work with Froyo 2.2: http://androidforums.com/incredible-all-things-root/171287-new-unrevoked-3-21-beta-froyo-up.html

No task killer either.

I never had it happen on 2.1. The only new app for me immediately after 2.2 was Chrome2Phone and whatever other apps updated with 2.2 (maybe Gmail and GTalk?).

Since it looks like the new root tool will be released shortly I'm waiting for that instead of doing a factory reset.

Had the same thing happen to me. My phone was in a continuous loop and wouldn't stop. Took it in to a local store, worker said he had a few come in with the same problem. Also, my sd card was totally erased all data gone (bummer, lots of vacation pics lost). They sent me a new phone (but not a new battery), new phone still says "install sd card"? Not sure what to do now?

@m8rixguy, doesn't sound like the same problem. Yours sounds like a bad SD and maybe a bad Phone. Just guessing.

No task killer here.

Are you running with the GPS enabled? That's one thing I noticed that really heats up the phone. I only turn my GPS on when I need to use Google Nav, and then the phone is sitting in the windshield mount right in front of the A/C vent, so it's constantly getting cooled. FWIW, I'm 10+ days in with no reboots at this point, but Bluetooth got FUBAR'ed somehow and won't turn on, so I will have to reboot if I want to listen to podcasts through my headset.

I reset my phone yesterday, works great since then. It's a time consuming process but it seems like its already paying off. I see you guys are talking about task killers...I don't use them.

I kept having reboot loops that could only be stopped by battery pull, and sometimes that didn't even work. Still was happening after 2.2 update and factory reset. Finally, got the idea to remove the SD card and the reboot loops stopped. I formatted the SD card before reinserting and so far no reboots. Maybe a corrupt file on the card?

Well, my "fix" didn't work for long. It started rebooting again. Just got a replacement phone and so far so good.

Well, I uninstalled Widget Locker and have not had Sense restart once. As much as it pains me I will have to go without Widget Locker until this is fixed. The restarts were becoming more frequent. Back to the boring HTC lockscreen. :(

By the way. After trying Froyo and a full factory reset, the old phone still had the Reboot loop issue. The new phone works great with no issue so far (been several weeks now). I believe that my issue was a hardware problem. Thinking back to the first day that it did the reboot loop I relized that it was the same day that I used it on my motorcycle trunk during a track day to record my GPS position. I had the phone in the rubber protector case and also in the leather belt case, but I think that the high frequency vibration was enought knock something loose internally.

Shouldn't fail that easy! Hopefully the replacement works better.

Good luck.

For what it's worth, my phone began to behave erratically a few days after delivery to the point it would reboot on me several times a day. 35 days in it took what felt like a visit to the last chance saloon and rebooted itself to oblivion.

I ended up having to do a recovery and since then it's been pretty gosh darned stable. Post Root, S-Off and FroYo'd it all seems good. Of course this was my mileage :)

exactly what i have had to do since the upgrade (which i did the gold card route). Sense always reloading - turned off WL and now all ok again :/

I started having this same problem a fewdays before receiving the Froyo update and I've read in a different thread others did as well. Once it reboots, it really doesn't stop for a while. Also itnseems the reboot loops get longer and longer. The first loop lasted a few minutes, the last one i had a couple of days ago lasted over an hour. Also, twice this week during the reboot loop my phone seemed to have hard reset itself, so twice now I've had to reinstall all of my apps. Another awesome feature I've gotten from this reboot problem is having to accept the terms of service on my apps each time i use them and nothing remembers my login info. I called Verizon once, they were supposed to call me back on a different line a few minutes later, but never did. I'll call again as soon as I have time, and if any solutions that are offered work, I'll report here.

Alright , I had these same issue for awhile, was driving me crazy . Anyways , as some of you mentioned it seems to be widget locker. I went under options and click on advanced , now this requires root, click on the bypass five second rule, after that change the loader from home helper back to sense, now restart your phone( turn it off then back on) . Since doing this I have not seen it do the loading screen . If your not rooted you seem to be out of luck . Hopefully this works for you guys as well.

edit: just crossed this post by the developer of widget locker as well, he briefly mentions the reload deal

Yep, that's right. If you buy Black Tie protection (like I did) they hadle the claims service for you (and it covers accidental damage such as dropping it on the floor and spiderwebbing the screen like I did). If Verizon can't fix it, you get a new phone. They were able to fix mine though.

But now, months after I got the phone, I'm starting to have this issue. I'm seriously considering breaking my contract and switching to Sprint/Evo in January.

My phone has gotten worse. I can't even use it anymore. Guarunteed to reboot within 5 minutes of use every time I try it. Only way to stop it is to pull the battery and let it sit for about 30 minutes. The Reboot option on the boot loader doesn't fix it, ATK doesn't fix it, pulling the battery and putting it right back in doesn't fix it. I'm on vacation today and my phone is useless on the trip. Talked to Best Buy in the town that I'm in now and they told me to take it up with Verizon (I bought the phone from Best Buy), claim they only handle warranty if I purchased a "plan" with them. Does this sound right? No sign of Froyo. Anybody get the 2.2 and has it fixed the issue? Times up for me, update now or I'm gonna need a new phone or something.

I had my replacement over two weeks, and no more reboots, I have everything that I was using before installed on it, I hope it will stay stable for a long time.

I disagree. My phone is inside in air conditioning, haven't been using it, and it's rebooting over and over. It's cool to the touch.

That's not the typical random reboot problem - return the phone for an exchange.

My random reboot problem went away after I rooted and installed a custom Virtuous Android 2.2 ROM, Virtuous custom Kernel with a leaked radio version 2.15.00.09.01. Don't know what did it.

I get the random reboot mostly mid-call... quite annoying.

Usually, no unless you took out Verizon insurance. But they sometimes make exceptions if you complain. Also, the phone comes with a manufacturer's warranty but you would need to return the phone for repair and activate you old phone until the Incredible is returned.
Really? Hm... I'm past my 30-day return and my phone's been banged up a bit. Am I still allowed to do that? Thanks.
