Help DROID Incredible random restart/reboot problem

I have the Froyo update. Phone still randomly reboots once a week. Oh well, the phone has bugs but I can live them.

i've probably gotten 3 times for a random reboot..for owning it for 1 month(not including froyo)..i been getting reboots because playing baseball game and battery runs out..but nothing random reboots

I have major random reboots issue in the last 2 weeks (got my phone 2 days after launch and never had an issue until now) I would go thru cycles of constant reboots. Even battery pulling didn't help. I called Verizon today and they are shipping me out a refurb. Pretty disappointing.

Is there any way that the battery im using is causing this? (siedo). My phone seems to be getting warmer since the update and i dunno what else would be the cause of this...
I kept having reboot loops that could only be stopped by battery pull, and sometimes that didn't even work. Still was happening after 2.2 update and factory reset. Finally, got the idea to remove the SD card and the reboot loops stopped. I formatted the SD card before reinserting and so far no reboots. Maybe a corrupt file on the card?

hmm didn't think of that, I will try that see what happens. Already got my refurbished on on the way but we will see if it continues.
thanks for the idea!

My Incredibale had been experiencing random reboots and occasionally a reboot loop that i could only stop by removing the battery. After the 2.2 update that installed last friday it went into the reboot loop all day. Finally took it to verizon. They asked if i had any antivirus on it. I told them i installed Lookout. they thought it might be the cause. they did a hard reset and that didn't fix it either so they have ordered me a new one due here today.

They asked if I had Adv. task Killer on mine. i said I have heard some that said install that and some said it was unnecessary. they said they put that on all Android phones. I had it on for a while and then removed it when i read the O/S didn't need it but I know some do use it.

I guess when I get my new one I'm going to be careful about what I put on - no Lookout I expect and not sure about ATK.

I love the phone but don't want to get back into the reboot problem again. Is there ANY consensus out there about how to fix this issue on Incredibles and on the value of antivirus like Lookout and apps like ATK? Also, is it a must to upgrade to 2.2 if my phone comes with the original O/S version?

Any advice on this would be most appreciated.

I got my phone on launch day and didn't have this problem until a few days ago when I got the 2.2 update. Did a factory reset like 2 hours ago and have still gone into the reboot loop twice since then.

Tbeas, I got my phone too on launch day. Had no issues. About a week before update my phone did a few resets. Got 2.2 and it got way worse. Tons of resets and than into loops. I talked to Verizon they are sending me a phone because factory reset didn't fix it which is what they will ask you to do.

I received the 2.2 OTA update. The phone is not rooted. Ever since 2.2, the Sense UI restarts dozens of times a day. By "restart" I mean the while HTC screen, followed by (loading...) with a spinner for about 10 sec. It happens sometimes when unlocking the screen, sometimes when returning from some app (totally random, no pattern that I can see).

I know, "Factory Reset" ... or ... "Wipe and do RUU" ... or ... whatever other old wives' tale you want to dredge up from the posts here. Those drastic measures seem to have created new problems for as many (or more) people than they've helped. I've read my butt off here before posting this.

Meanwhile I've seen references to this issue woven within threads on the many battery life and browser lag threads, but no thread on this issue itself. At the risk of creating more old wives' tales ("Uncle Festus told me I should..."), I'd like to see if folks can detect a pattern or an app that might be making it happen.

I suspect it's a bug in Sense on 2.2 and not some app. It started immediately after my 2.2 OTA, and before I installed any new apps. It seems to happen more often after some type of notification like an alarm or something that puts a notification into the pulldown list.

So are others experiencing this? Did it start right after 2.2? When do you see it? Has someone found a cure apart from "reformatting the hard drive" (the ultimate sledgehammer)?

Got my refurbished phone today, havent activated yet, since i was unable for some weird reason, will need to call verizon on day time, so far installed froyo on it, and using maps on wifi, no reboots, tomorrow will be testing navigation, I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Hi all, i've had an HTC Incredible for about three months now and for the first 2.5 months it worked flawlessly. About 10 days before the Android 2.2 update started to come out it started the dreaded shutdown and restart scenario....

i called support.. no real help.. went to the store.. told me the update to 2.2 should fix it.. (in reality i think it made it worse)

Yesterday, i was on a call and my phone started the reboot cycle in the middle of a call, and continued to restart over and over again, so i drive to the verizon store with it rebooting. when i got to the store the (lady who was truly good) of course thought it was an app i had loaded (i loaded a startup manager app. as i wanted to stop loading stuff like skype (which i learned i can not.. hmm.. go figure)).

Well, she restarted it after uninstalling the startup manager and it started doing the reboot scenario over and over in her own hand..lol

She ordered me a replacement. And i ordered a Droid X in case the problem is not resolved soon (ie. with replacement or update).

In my opinion there obviously is a problem here, and the brains should be able to fix it as the phone worked flawlessly for 2.5 months before this restart problem started.

IMO this problem is not app or signal related.

Rob.

note: i use my phone for work, and these problems cost me more money than the phone is worth. I hope the vendors realize people use these devices for work, and they are not just "play toys".

note: Verizon never even gave me one bit of guff re. replacing the phone and i do not have a replacement policy or anything like that. they have been very good with my account, but the stuff needs to work!!!

I have been having the exact same issue since 2.2 updated as well. Would love to hear some feedback on what the cause and resolution is??

Would you care to post some links to these "many" problems that were caused by doing a reset? Because I have been on this forum (and others) everyday since 2.2 was released and I haven't seen them.

I realize that many people consider it a PITA to reset up their phone, but if you are not willing to do the one that will most likely solve your problem then I don't know what you think you are going to get out of this.

Call it an old wives tale all you want. My computer degree and years of experience in the IT field tells me otherwise.

I had a similar problem and after the 2.2 update all worked better but the other day the phone started restarting and upon boot up it started force closing all of the apps on the phone.

I tried everything to fix it and nothing helped until I wiped it and reinstalled everything. At that time I found that I had about 6 apps on the previous setup that were not 2.2 compatible and so I didn't re-install those. Since then I have not had a single problem and the phone runs much faster and better overall.

i did a wipe on mine awhile back and it did not seem to help.. but then again i installed a couple apps back on the new config... at this point i've become an expert at reconfiguring my email.. :)

Also after my visit to verizon y'day it has not restarted once in the last 24 hours.. not holding my breath.

Sense has been restarting on me many times a day after updating to 2.2, just as the OP noted. This did not happen to me with 2.1. My update was not OTA, I updated to 2.2 via the RUU method.

There was a thread about this early last week, but it didn't go anywhere.

Happens to me too - applied the patch OTA, with no reset. I haven't figured out a pattern yet either, but on my phone it seems to be linked to how long you're away from sense. Ie, after a certain amount of time in an app, on a call, or asleep, sense restarts. I can't force it to happen, though.

I've also noticed the occasionally Sense is messing up folders as well - if I leave a folder open and switch to a different homescreen, occasionally when I return to that screen the folder is now in the background and unresponsive. Tapping on the folder icon (to reopen it) doesn't do anything. Tapping on any other folder icons opens a new folder, which then closes normally.

I have this same issue, but thought it was due to using Widget Locker. I've not yet uninstalled Widget Locker to see if that is indeed the cause. I like Widget Locker too much. :D I upgraded to 2.2 via the RUU which completely wipes the phone (had to reinstall all my apps). Is this not the equivalent of doing a factory reset?

I have been able to make Sense restart with the following steps:
-Add the folder for Pandora My Stations to any screen.
-Open the folder.
-Open a station.
-Menu
-Quit

I get a force close on com.htc.bg about 10 times per day but not sure what it is actually doing to the phone. No HTC logo though.

@Terabethia - I'm looking for the actual cause of the Sense restarts. I've been a software developer for most of my life and I'm not some rusted out FORTRAN guy. I'm doing Android development right now (CSipSimple VoIP phone app and others). I prefer to zero in on the actual (physical) cause of a problem before coming up with a solution. Combined with solving by exclusion (what the problem cannot be) I've been very successful in solving problems where others have failed or used a sledgehammer. And my phone is running like a dream in all other respects.

Since my first post, I'm starting to focus on the Android OS task pruning as a possible physical cause. I am working on a theory that Sense is getting pruned to free up memory. I'm guessing that when Sense is needed again for home screen (unlock, back from app, home from app, exit app like Dolphin), it has been killed and thus needs to initialize. I'm using a little app called aLogCat that lets me save off the last x hours of the system log to a file on SD. Slogging through the log entries is time consuming, and interpreting it is a learning process.

I hope to eventually find the smoking gun. Only then will I be comfortable formulating a solution (which may best be done in an OS update!). Without the smoking gun, I hold no weight with the Sense developers; with it I can authoritatively file a bug with cause and they will find it difficult to ignore.

Same problem here...but for me it generally (not always) happens when I receive or make a phone call. Very frustrating but fortunately Sense restarts and loads very quickly. Looking forward to a fix!

I've been experiencing the same problem. I thought it was widget locker, the more I read the more I think I to do to a reset. Kinda sucks but whatever, better start backing up my stuff!

I thought so as well, initially. Uninstalling widgetlocker didn't solve the problem.

Are any of you using a task killer? Sounds like a task killer is auto killing the sense process. Uninstall your task killer and see if you have the problem still. Then install system panel instead of a task killer
