Help HELP - cannot update firmware via kies

Thanks Stylelite,

Still no luck though I'm afraid... I don't get a list of anything thing after typing 272, I just have the top grey bar that says 'VOD' with 'sales code' next to it and then its a blank black screen all the way down to the install and cancel buttons.

Simillarly in regdedit I have nothing that says sales code/product code - even nothing that mentions VOD!! All I see that could be it although I dont think it is is model name, and that just says GT-I9000.

Don't think this is gonna happen for me unfortunately.

Last question, when you say remove everything for Kies manually, do you mean from the regedit screen > and then delete every sub folder and its contents listed under Kies? - Also unistalling from the main 'uninstall' screen?

there are 2 ways to check your firmware version
1. go to > settings > about phone in here you will find firmware version, baseband version, kernal version and build number. the 1 you want is baseband version.

the other way to check is to, bring up the dial pad and enter the following:
*#1234# this will bring up a version screen with the following:
PDA: I9000XX***
Phone: I9000XX***
CSC; I9000XX***
the last 3 letters are what you are looking for

This may be a dumb question, but if the Froyo update is coming out soon (?!) will this not update the firmware as well or require the latest JM1 firmware?

Shoudl I wait to do the firmward update when froyo is out or is there a benefit in going to jm1 now? My wifes phone doesnt seemt to have the problems with gps that a lot of people have and her phone is running jf3 even though she only got it about 4 weeks ago.

Hi goalc, its really up to you. Froyo is expected at the end of this month, we'll have to wait and see if it arrives.
My phone was on JF3 and I was having problems with it so I updated to JM1 and I have to say it was worth it.

Hi stylelite, what improvements have you seen by going to JM1 compared to JF3?

ive tryed this with no result, first i tryed changing my product code (from VDI) on my phone but XEU was not on the list so i edited my reg files but kies didnt offer me an update.

and i agree samsung prob wont release froyo on time.

Kies is frustrating me sooo much... Samsung really needs to hire a bunch of good programmers cause the connectivity issues are just silly and frankly getting on my nerves!!!!

follow this guide: [HOWTO+FAQ] Get Android 2.2 Froyo (I9000XXJPC) over KIES or ODIN! - xda-developers

samsung are only offering JM1 firmware now froyo update talked about in this link was only a test version.

If you edit your reg files it should look like the pic. save the text thats there before you edit as you may need it to update to froyo when that is relaised.

the JM1 firmware has fixed my issues wit kies hope it works for you too

Hi goalc, my main reason for doing the update was to see if it would sort out the problems I had with the Wi-Fi, it kept randomly turning itself on and it did sort this out. Overall it has made the phone quicker, its smoother and battery life seems better to. there is a new unlock screen and a task manager app. For me it was worth going to JM1

Thanks stylelite, we will have a go at the update tomorrow. Did you used to get poor wifi signal as well as the problem you mentioed, and if so is this sorted now? My wife can be sat right next to our router and only gets 1 bar of signal and it will keep dropping in and out.....

Wi-Fi signal wasn't to bad at all before update and is good now, although it doe's drop out now and again, I just unplug router, wait 30seconds and then plug it back in and that usually sorts it out.
What firmware version are you on?

Hi, its running JF3. The phone is only about 4 weeks old (got it from the Carphone Warehouse) so I don't know if its an old handset or if JM1 has only just come out?
We were in Costa today and my laptop could connect to the free wireless fine with an excellent quality signal, and whilst the phone could see about 4 networks it wouldn't connect to any. There was a woman next to us with a HTC Desire and she said that she connected with no problems and had a full signal.... the wifi really does seem awful :(

I was able to upgrade with Kies by messing with the program's regedit.. isn't this borderline ridiculous?? For every little problem so far it has been the community giving solutions to problems and not Samsung that I paid around 600$.. I like the phone but come on.. won't go with samsung again in the future unless they pull off a 180

JF3 is what mine was on, it was alright but JM1 is much better, well at least it is for me. Some people have said its no better whist others have said it has made a big differance to their phones. AS far as I can tell the WiFi on JF3 was a problem, there are a lot of posts about the WiFi problems people are having on Samsung galaxy S forum. So you may well benefit from the update to JM1. Mine seems to connect now where ever I am and usually with a good signal strength.

My regedit looks nothing like this!!

Admittedly I am having problems connecting to Kies - STILL! - so it probably has something to do with that.

When I try to connect the phone and go into regedit I do get a similar screen as above but my folders are numbered 1,2,3,4. None of them contain lines titled 'product code' or 'software revision' or 'hidswver', basically anything that mentions a firmware code so obviously Im unable to edit them :(

I did manage to succesfully root my phone and apply a lagfix (check me out!! LOL) and am now quite happy with the phone even on the current firmware.... amazing!! Get a quadrant score of 2250 now too!!!!

So what does JH1, JM3 all mean? Is there a table that explains this to those of us not in the know?

JH1, JM3 JM1 JF3 are all different versions of firmwares used on the Galaxy S. There are a lot of different versions, some are just for the UK, others are for different countrys. If you google it Im sure you will find a list of all firmwares and the order they were released in.

Hi every one, I found the following on XDA developers, so I thought I would post it here to help every one who is having trouble updating from JF3. This worked for me

From what I have gathered on other forums (XDA Developers) its all to do with how your device is identifed in its product code.

I bought my Galaxy S sim free from Carphone Warehouse and I get the same "can't be upgraded" and "is already up to date" from Kies. Others on XXJF3 have however been able to update to the JM1 build through Kies.

It seems that the updated build has only been issued for "stock" ROMs. Despite buying SIM free from Carphone Warehouse my device seems to be treated as provider ROM.

There are two ways of checking what the "product code" is. On your device use the code *#272*HHmm# (where HHmm is the current time in 24hr format that your device is displaying. Mine says the product code is CPW (which obviously means Carphone Warehouse is being treated a provider build). Others have seen things like VDI (vodafone ireland), ORA (orange) and so on.

It seems (again from the other forums) that the stock ROMs have a product code ending in XEU (for UK - sorry I don't know the full set - go the XDA Developer forum for Galaxy S and search).

The other way to check apparently (which I haven't tried yet) is to fire up Kies, connect the Galaxy, then before doing anything else go into the Registry Editor and look for the following key:
HKey_current_user\Software\Samsun\Kies\DeviceDB\12
Note the number at the end could be anything so you will need to look through

This key you are looking for will contain the following value:
"Product Code"= "GT-I9000KHDCPW"
The CPW bit is the key information (at least for my device).

As this is an HKey_current _user setting it is only there when Kies is running and the device connected.

Now apparently (and I don't know whether this works), if you change the registry entry to the value GT-I9000HKDXEU (again only for UK) and close the registry and then try the firmware update (all while still running Kies ovbviously), Kies will now think you have a stock ROM and offer the ROM upgrade to JM1.

I will try this when I get a chance and feed back if it works. But at least it may offer an explanation and/or workaround.

Registry Hack
xda-developers

Thanks for this - I just tried it on my wife's SGS that she got from Carphone Warehouse, modified the registry and it went like a dream :D

The phone is generally faster (she was on JF3 before), GPS seems to be accurate to within a couple of metres and wi-fi signal is improved as well (which was her big problem before).

I just need to decide myself now whether to get an SGS ofr the new Desire HD when it comes out....

Thanks again for the info to allow us to do the upgrade :)

None of these steps works for me either. Once installing the latest version of Kies, then spending the half an hour updating it, Iall it does when I connect my phone in ANY mode, test or not, is give me an error message that says: "Reconnect the device on Samsung Kies (PC Studio) mode. Kies doesnt support this connect mode".

I can't figure out how to put my phone in Kies mode.

Maybe I'm just an idiot.

This is also something that worked for me. Look for DEVCONINFO, follow it along to the right until you find PDR, this is also the product code. Double click DEVCONINFO, A box will pop up and the contents will be high lighted, remove the high light and use the left and right keys to move to the right until you find PDR then change the last 3 letters to XEU (UK) and then click on OK

Do the same with the product code further down.

The ones you are looking for I have marked with a red outline.

This may help

Hi there, check out the post on the 28 september, it seems to work for most people.
As for getting a firmware update through android market, I've never heard of that and Im fairly certain you can't.
The registry hack is quit easy to do, just follow the guide and it should work.
Can you get your phone to connect to Kies alright, this is the first thing to do, then check your firmware version.
Good luck

the reg hack bit, that doesnt break the warranty does it?

I did check the 28 sept post and read about it,but I also found another post

This is what you should see when you enter *#272*HHmm#(HHmm= 24 hour clock)
Attachment 10433
scroll down until you see XEU click on it and then on install. Beware it will reset your phone back to how it was originally so back up anything important, contacts photos ect.
If this doesn't work try the registry:
open kies and connect your phone,
open regedit,
kies should already be shown, if not this is the registry key HKey_current_user\Software\Samsung\Kies\DeviceDB\1 2(this number may vary)
under kies there are sub folders 1, 2, ect click on each one in turn and check the right hand pane until you find the product code/sales code, double click it and change the last 3 letters from what you have now VOD to XEU(for the UK)
close regedit and go back to kies and click on firmware update and then ctrl+ant+U+P this will put kies into test mode it should now show a update to JM1.
REMEMBER WHILE DOING THE ABOVE TO KEEP KIES RUNNING AND YOUR PHONE CONNECTED
good luck

does both of these works,it seems after putting XEU on preconfig you dont need to do the reg hack?,

and I see that hes from the UK and says that it only works in the UK,can anyone clarify?
