I'm pretty certain the CPU/GPU is significantly better, and in the case of the GPU, it is a LOT better.

Stuff like Google Earth will run smoother on Galaxy because of the GPU. I don't know why there's this misconception out there that GPU is only good for games. I don't play games or plan to play game on a touchscreen and I'm a gamer. Just isn't going to happen. The games you can play properly on a touchscreen is well...lame for the most part.

I downloaded some of the Gameloft demos and... eh. They're the same kinds of games you'd find on a PS2 except much harder to control. Not my cup of tea.

Pray tell, other than 3D games and Google Earth, what everyday use will I get out of a souped up GPU?

The reason why most people tie GPU with games is because that's the type of activity that kicks in the GPU for most people. 3-D games really tax the processor, so a good dedicated GPU can really help offload some of that processing requirement. But in my view (and likely yours as well), 3-D gaming probably isn't best suited for touchscreens. The user-interface just can't compete with a dedicated controller (or full-sized keyboard/mouse/joystick).

So the GPU is only used for apps like the one you mentioned: Google Earth. But I for one don't use Google Earth very much. Plus, it's so much better on a big monitor than a 4" screen. And I can't think of any other app I use on my phone that requires 3-D rendering. And that's probably why I don't really care about the GPU on the Epic. But I can totally see gamers caring.

Geesh, I don't know. Live wallpapers that requires 3D rendering? You don't think that will help the offload the balance?

You know the processor is more powerful too, right? Snapdragon isn't exactly 'snappy' for the current standard already out there, which is being set by the Hummingbird and OMAP processor.

Also, the blue tint does not affect ALL SAMOLED. Some have it, others doesn't. I have it. Read it here:

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one with super human eyes!!!!!! Again, even with the baddest GPU on earth, the dots are still there!!!! I saw the dots on the home screen which had a wall paper with lots of leaves I believe. Honestly, I'm not bashing the phone, it could smoke the evo, I really didn't play with it that long, but the dots were very easily visible without even really trying to see them.

Ok, no more ranting about the dots. Promise!!!

Google Earth and live 3D wallpapers do not add up to a very compelling argument that a boss GPU has much more applications than just gaming. From where I stand it appears to be mostly gaming and then a few odds and ends programs that I don't use enough for it to matter.

So really... just gaming.

gaming and the ability for a higher level of 'flash' on things like say a home replacement. Samsung would do well to pair up with Tat to make a kick @#$ home for the Epic, or hell, the whole galaxy S line. The GPU has enough kick to handle about anything, and Tat (supposedly from their 'videos' *I don't believe it because they don't have ANY phones or devices running their software to date) could do a lot with that hardware. Shit, they can do a lot with ANY of the current mid to high end Android phones.

Did you somehow missed the part where the processor is slower?

And its any apps that requires 3D rendering, not games. Spec standard wise, Evo is old. It was good for its time. Samsung Galaxy is now the *best* for specs. It'll be old as well in like 1 more month or something, and probably what Droid 1 is like now in by Christmas. Nothing last forever. On the bright side, both phones meet the specification for Gingerbread, so yea to that.

I'm totally fine with anyone saying Evo have better cameras or whatever. But come on, processor and GPU isn't something that you can argue about. There are benchmarks to prove these things, like they do for desktop CPUs.

Having better of things like GPU/CPU is a good thing. It set standards in the competitive market that other companies have to beat. I swear, half the people who says they don't need a better GPU wouldn't be arguing the same if they were given it. There are apps out there that requires 3D rendering, NOT just games. It also have to do with videos and probably stuff like Adobe Flash videos, and many other stuff you don't realize, which will help offload the balance from the CPU.

And yes, I'm looking forward to the smartphone that will let me play 1080p videos. Right now the Samsung Galaxy can do about 720p without lagging I believe.

You have not given me one single reason outside of games why the superiority of the Hummingbird processor means anything above a spec nerd level. Google Earth and 3D live wallpapers was all you could come up with. Specs mean zilch when there is nothing I am using that takes advantage of them. The Evo is still very fast and zippy regardless of the processor specs. Will it make my email faster? Will it make my web pages load better somehow? Is my remote desktop going to "fly" all of a sudden?

And what is the point of playing 1080p and 720p video on a phone? The max res of the screen is 800 X 640 and the files are over 2GB anyway. Just another impractical tech demo.

If you need me to explain why one processor can be faster than another, and practical effects, I'll have to answer, "Google it".

I'm not here to teach you what a faster CPU can do. Pretty sad if you don't know. Here's a start:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFPtV8I2BRQ
Note the choppiness on some website. And, "it seems the Captivate and Droid X is faster than Nexus One (Snapdragon) running Froyo."

Makes you wonder if you'll be using those excuse when dual cores come running around...I mean, going by that mentality your phone will be the best specced one forever beyond "nerd specs".

Regarding the 1080p. I like to watch my source without converting. I'm lazy. I don't feel like converting a movie that might take upward of 30 minutes. I'd prefer to drag and drop and watch it. I can do that with no problem for some of the codecs that are supported, which is pretty nice.

...and stop downplaying specs. Both phones barely meet the minimum requirement for Gingerbread. It's important.

Hey I know everyone knows what "they" say about opinions! Dang its a phone, pick the one u like and go on with ur life.........just sayin! In my, um, opinion they're both awesome phones, the Epic just grabbed my attention more, oh well in a month or 2 something new will come out and both the EVO and the Epic will be dinosaurs! LOL

The processor debate rings on and on.

The truth is that none of the super processors, in the stock configurations as distributed out of the box, really shines nor shows what either's really capable of - that's just a fact that drives so many to rooting to gain better performance.

http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/141489-fast-evo-2-2-custom-kernel.html

BTW - all three processors - Snapdragon 8x50, OMAP3 and Hummingbird - are already announced by their makers as superseded by existing or forthcoming models - dual-core Snapdragon, OMAP4 and the dual-core Orion respectively.

And because of that - if we're going to have any honest debate, let's lower the temperature, mmmk?

Invective is counterproductive - I'm just saying... let's stick to the issues, and not personal remarks.

Thank you.

I'm definitely looking forward to the dual cores, probably from Samsung, unless they finally decide to open the gates to the SAMOLED, or screw me hardcore with my current Galaxy ;).

That's precisely also the reason why I rooted my Galaxy. Stock is crap...and it had issues. Lag fix+Launcher Pro=bliss. But that's the beautiful of Android -- we're not stuck with the crap. :)

Welcome to the forums!

Max file size on Android is 2GB, a 1080p movie is 4-8GB. So good luck with that.

"We still consider Samsung's Hummingbird application processor to be among the very best for mobile computers, but this morning Sammy itself is stepping up the charge to make it look real old real fast. The freshly announced dual-core Orion promises to whip us all into a frenzy of geek lust with "5 times the 3D graphics performance over the previous processor generation from Samsung," 1080p video encoding and decoding at 30fps, embedded GPS, a native triple display controller, and on-chip HDMI 1.3a interface. Those last two bits mean you can drive two displays on your mobile device while feeding a third, such as a HDTV, all thanks to the one all-powerful chip inside. Availability for "select customers" is coming late this year, with mass production set for the first half of 2011. To say we're looking forward to it would be a massive understatement."

I'm sure by the sound of that, they'll have something in the works to get it to work ;).

Pixelation? Man you must have super duper microscope eyes! I have 20/10 and there was no pixelation from a normal viewing distance, at all.

Your eyesight "sounds" (lol) sharper than mine but the pixels are obvious like the clouds in the sky. I complained about it when i first saw the galaxy for AT&T, as they jumped right at me when I looked at the text. For this reason, coupled with a much bigger screen, I prefer the EVO since I do a lot of reading and web surfing.

Just to throw my 2 cents in, I like the EVO but I admit, the camera and screen of the Epic puts the EVO to shame. Not even close. I'm sticking with my evo because I love the form factor of it, but I wish HTC would at least improve the camera. I talked trash to a fellow co worker about how my phone did HD, we did a comparision of videos (both on his EPIC) and the difference was pretty obvious.

I don't know man.. seriously. I only checked out the phone for a total of 20 minutes but I really didn't see any pixelation. Didn't load up any text though. Consider it on my to-do list.

So I don't post much... but I have been keeping up to date with all the comments and posts in both the Epic and Evo forum. I happen to own an Evo, but with other lines with upgrade availability I am still open to getting the Epic. A couple things though:

1. I think the Epic vs Evo vs ??? is great because it allows people to weigh the pros and cons (particularly those they never thought about) before buying. If its that much of a problem for some users then its fairly easy to just avoid threads labeled "evo vs epic". That said, the discourse should stay constructive.

2. I am still not completely understanding why there is all of this tension surrounding the EVO vs the Epic all of a sudden. Where was this when the Captivate and Vibrant came along? As I understand it, the Epic is basically the same phone as the other two with a keyboard, flash, and front camera no? So why weren't people (and by people I mean former Evo owners) talking up the Captivate and Vibrant as surpassing the Evo already? If anything the epic inherited all the issues of the previous two Samsung variants and then added some unique issues of its own because of the keyboard.

3. (So its more than a couple things) I also do not trust Samsung to provide any fixes or upgrades in a timely manner if they even do so at all. By the time the likely do, we may all be gawking at the next best release. I think its not a bad idea to hold off on my upgrade until I see how Samsung decides to support these phones, and in particular, fix the obvious GPS issues and build issues they have been struggling with so far. I am not they type of person to want to sit there in the store testing my phone right there in case I need to swap it out for another one only to have to sit and quality test that one as well.

So for now, my EVO is doing fine, and thats without root (waiting on 4G fixes with the mods before I go that root - pun intended).

Edit - I just thought of this... but I am aware that the Epic may appear snappier than the Vibrant and the Captivate for now because its actually running a different variant of touchwiz. But this is not exactly a pro since the variant the Epic runs is actually an older version. If the Epic is ever updated to touchwiz 3.0 WITH landscape it just might revert to the same lag performance levels of the previous Samsung phones. In fact there is a good chance it will since it has the exact same processor.

great post.. i agree... with most what u said....

to respond to the above portion.. my guess...
it is because both phones are on the same network.. and direct competition to each other because 4G (the only 2 phones that have this)

People get carried away. It's like the Red Sox vs. Yankees (Red Sox ftw). Some people know it's just a game. Some people will brawl in the stands.

In the end, we all want to root for the team/product we support. Some of us can be objective. Others cannot. But hopefully, people can sift through the subjectivity and find what they need to find in this huge-ass thread :)

And some people enjoy a good rivalry and look forward to the ongoing trash talking. I prefer to take it out on Apple rather than an Android brethren.

I'm just glad Sprint is out in front with 2 great phones + 4G. That seems new to them, and I hope they work hard to stay there. I love my EVO and will stick with it: I've learned how to Swype, and I like the cool sleekness of the phone. But I also greatly admire the screen/graphics on my coworker's epic (and she preferred a hard keyboard). So now my wife needs a new (Sprint) phone, and gets to choose...she wins either way.

The lag performance comes from using Samsung's RFS filesystem (it cannot buffer). The lagfix creates a virtual ext2 filesystem to buffer it.

The processor itself is quite good, and currently rated the *best*.
