Your thoughts on dxTop! Droid owners!

I just downloaded this and love it better than GDE PandaHome and Home++ all which I have gave some time trying out. I love the idea of being able to have 5 icons on the bottom that stay for all screens... but for the life of me I cant figure out how to set it! can someone point me in the right direction?

THANKS!

I have been waiting for any of these home apps to get up to speed for Android 2.0 and Droid support. I have installed and uninstalled Pandahome 3 times and have been running Home ++ (beta) for the past few days with a couple of lock-ups, but apart from that not too bad.

Just slide the tabs to one side and drag and drop your shortcuts on it. These five icons are worth a screen by themselves!

If you need to get to the tabs just slide them back, also you can long press the two left soft buttons and get these functions.

what's Mixer? is that the same as AudioManager Widget? I can't find Mixer in the store and if it's an EQ program i would absolutely love to install it!

thanks for sharing - i love seeing other people's home screens.

edit: also, what's the SMS widget on your last screen? :)

The SMS widget he's using looks like "Beautiful SMS" from the Beautiful Widgets collection.

i bought it on the strength of this thread after trying many other laggy, buggy, crashy home replacements.

i absolutely love dx. no problems whatsoever. WELL worth the $3.

if it's laggy, try going back to your home screen and removing widgets before switching to dx permanently. with other home replacements, i read (not sure) that they run as a layer over the default home screen, so you may have *two* copies of each widget running now.

i removed all them from the start, so i can't say if that contributes to the lag or not.

I'm not sure I'm ready for that big of a commitment right now :D But I will test and see what it does to memory.

Edit: did not help, Home ++ runs fine, but when I power off and pwer on, I need to task kill camera, and several other programs to free up enough memory for it to start properly, then it is good to go and the Android O.S. handles closing apps as needed, must be a priority thing on loading.

Trying out the demo, so far so good however I have another question:

I have some apps (like phone, contacts, messaging) on the dock, love that feature!

However now the "desktop indicator" is gone and so is the trash can. How can I toggle the dock on/off?

It is the first home screen replacement that I have actually paid for. I like it alot and it doesn't force close.

You can long press left 2 soft buttons on the bottom for this functionality or slide the dock to one side.

If you long press the icon or widget and release you will get all the options you need.

Seems so obvious now... I slid the drawers to get to the dock, didn't think about sliding the dock to get back to the drawers :)

Thanks!

How did you make your tool bar widgets normal size. What clock is that?

PS. Why are you using the dxtop picture widget when the normal one has a much smaller border so it wastes less space?

1) It is the Beautiful home clock.

2) Have not thought about the Droid picture frame. Generally the native widgets are lame.

3) I do not know what you mean by tool bar normal size? I think it just looks that way.

I think I have a similar question. On the screen shots above the Application tool bar icons seems larger than the default size. How do you change that size cuz right now they are pretty tiny?

I think it is simply an optical illusion. I have not done anything special to the icons.

I will say you can change an items icon although I have not tried it yet.

i quite like dxTop so far. the screen organization is just pure genius: one extra screen AND less swiping!

the dock is also great...i put all my toggle widgets there (mute all, bluetooth, wifi, etc) and it freed up a bunch of screen space.

the way icon options work (long press then immediately drop) are also very useful and make the droid feel more like a computer, which i love.

finally, i like that dxTop is "lightweight", meaning that it doesn't try to change Android's overall look and feel very much.

things i'm not sure about yet: not really sure i'm gonna get a whole lot of use of the 2nd tab at the bottom and it makes it harder to get at the apps tab. also, i have come back from unlock several times with a force close, but if i ignore it, there appear to be no ill effects...weird and annoying.

Set the default lock screen as Droid and rebott twice it should solve the problem.

The right tab is a task manager long press an icon and you will see what it does.

Works pretty good except the google search widget. There is only an option for the dxtop one and when I do a search it hiccups and reverts back to the original. I like the original better. Anyone else have this issue?

Am I the only sucker that has bought and liked multiple home screen alternatives. I am running the demo version of dx now.

OK so I just bought the full Dxtop app and now the 5 apps at the bottom are not small anymore. they are almost the full icon size like in the images above.

So to iterate, buying the full program will grant the larger icons. Hope that helps!!

It lagged a lot. It was too slow for me so I removed it. However, I really like Home++. It's a lot better than any of the other desktop replacements out there.

Home++ is working well for me also, very stable compared to other free home alternatives. The developer is hoping to enhance it further after getting it more stabilized. I preferred PandaHome, but it locked up too much. I miss the side docks.

I think if everyone listed there widgets and programs running in the background we would find the culprit to most of these laggy problems. The fact that dxTop and other home alternatives run great for some indicate incompatibility with certain programs.

Sometimes a couple of reboots will solve laggy problems.
