Tried update, no dice. Unrooted and backed out lag fix. Tried update no dice. I have never been able to connect to the server. Rooted again. Here is what info is. Does this seem correct?

Well, the update installed correctly for me. I have stock non-rooted android but I did change some of the settings in the GPS menu trying one of the fixes put on here. If this is the fix for GPS then its a very bad joke from Samsung's part. I don't see any difference at all.
From inside my office next to a window GPS Test sees 2-3 satellites, never locks onto them. Standing outside with a clear view of the sky to the South, East and West I get 6-7 sats but it never locked to any of them, even after 5 minutes. Both GPS Test and GPS Status showed the same things. Google maps showed about the right position but the accuracy was 500 meters.

NOTE: I was able to "force" download the update using the "check for update" feature. If you burned you "24 hour wait", THERE IS AN EASY FIX!
Settings>date and time> Turn off Automatic, then set date> set it to tomorrows date and try again, it works! I undid the lag fix, but left rooted and it worked!
Well, i just force DL'd the update. As far as the GPS goes, it does "see" sattelites quicker. In my basement with 2 floors above me I "saw" 12 sattelites within about 20 seconds and was locked on to 5 in about 30. I took the dog out for a walk. As soon as I walked outside, I locked on to 8. As we walked around the block I remained locked to 7-9 sats with 16 feet accuracy the whole time.
I think one thing to note, is after the update, the first initial "locking" may take a minut or two because it is a "cold start". Once you have cold started, subsequent locks happen quicker. After closing GPS status and trying again on my back porch, I locked on to 6 sats nearly instantly. I walked into the house, up stairs and out on the balcony. I remained locked the whole time. I closed GPS status and fired up Latitude. It found my exact location in seconds. Wireless assist was off the whole time.
Granted, I haven't taken it for a drive yet to test it on the road, I will tomorrow morning on my way for work. Also notable; When I first got (my second) Captivate, the GPS worked flawlessly for the first two weeks. Then went completely dead. So hopefully, it will remain working as it is now and not crap out in a few weeks.
Those of you who this didn't seem to work for, I feel bad. Because THIS IS the intended and promised fix! There will not be another update specificaly for GPS in the next few days. Unless they find that certain phones were not corrected by the fix, they wont try ti fix it again. So if yours isn't fixed, I encourage you all to let them know about it!
FWIW; Engadget is claiming they tested it and it works.

"An update to improve the Samsung Captivate's GPS performance is now available. Captivate customers will receive a notification on their device that an update is available and will simply need to download the file to update their phone. The updates will be pushed to customers' devices over the next few weeks.
They also quote say they talked to AT&T support and said;
"We've independently confirmed with AT&T that this update does include GPS improvements."
So far so good for me. Lets hope it lasts and that Froyo will follow in the next few months!
As far as the other "optimizations" go, I undid my V2 lagfix before the update (but kept root). The update went smoothly. It took a bit longer to boot after the update, but that was to be expected. I didn't notice any difference in the "media scan", it still seemed to take a while. I didn't notice any difference with UI lag or Marketplace lag. I use launcherpro and have the setting optimized so I havent experienced any of that lag since the day I installed LP. The one thing I did notice is that my wifi seems quicker and the signal doesn't seem to fluxuate so much. After removing the lag fix and applying the new firmware, my quandrent score dropped from 2231 to 893.. anyone know if the lag fix will work on the JH7 firmware?

A tale of 2 Captivates - me and my fiance both have Captivates. Today, at work, I saw the posts about the update. My phone had been rooted and had One Click Lag Fix. I manually checked for update, found it, downloaded it, and it installed without me removing root or OCLF. I downloaded OTA - no wireless. GPS locks on to 7 to 12 satellites in les than 30 seconds. At home, it locks to 8 in 30 seconds inside. I uninstalled old OCLF 1.0 and reinstalled 2.0 once I got home. Quadrant says 2208. Screamin'.
My fiance's Captivate had no root and no OCLF - straight stock - manually located update and downloaded w/home wireless. The GPS works great (can't access GPS settings now on either phone with #*#*1472365*#*#). Quadrant was 812. Installed OCLF 2.0 w/root - Quadrant now 2168.
Tried Kies first with fiance's Captivate - Kies did not show update for her phone.
Both updates went smooth - slowed at 50% on download, then sped up to finish. Slowed at 50% on install, but completed with no errors.
We both already had Quickoffice - don't think that updated. There is now a widget available for You Tube I hadn't noticed before.
Both phones crispy fast with OCLF 2.0. Both GPS systems lock quick (even in the house).

Well my gps had me on all sorts of different roads navigating home today. Fuhk Samsung. I am so sick of their phone and their support I could throw a fit. I also wish my phone would stay on and it would stop deleting my email accounts. So I have a "smart" phone that can't email, utilize gps or even stay on. What a pos.

How long did you wait for a lock. After this update, the GPS will do a "cold start" and could take up to 5 minuts or so for the initial lock.
3g strength should'nt affect your GPS really. If you have "use wireless networks" turned on, it will attempt to use your 3g and wifi signals to help triangulate your initial possition while the sats are locking in. This, I belive, is how "assisted GPS" (or aGPS) works.
Add me to the "can't connect to AT&T server" list. It has been this way for several weeks. Has worked prior to that. Edit: Just called AT&T. Rep found an 'article' mentioning this problem and it said to tell the customer to speak with "Samsung support". He told me since they didn't have a dedicated group like that he sent me to warranty.
i did not let it sit for long. i will try longer for the initial lock.

Anybody else stuck in the Software Update: Communication in Progress window? Mine's been sitting like that for nearly an hour. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact I forgot to turn off JuiceDefender and enable 3G before hand? Rooted with 1 click lag fix and stock ROM.

Add me to the cannot connect to the att server list too. I keep changing the date ahead to bypass the stupid 24 hour rule and still cannot connect to the server. When I go back to the true date I now have to wait 119 hours
Im wondering if I should go bitch at the local att store to try to get a new captivate...

So anyone else having the "No Firmware" issue? I tried to update twice and it failed both times ( first time the update goes to 100%, yet it says it failed. second time it stays at 0%, then phone rebooted and said the update failed ), and now I can't even get into the "Software Update" option. And now whenever i restart the phone it always says "Did not update".
I think my phone is kinda screwed up. It says "JH7" in the "About Phone" part but it seems incomplete... no quickoffice.

Manually checked for update, everything went fine..then when phone rebooted I have a message saying the update was not applied? Yet in settings I have the new build number and all the goodies, no quick office though, and i can still access gps settings with 1472365. Was previously rooted and oclf'd, and have the battery mod. Could that be why I got a partial update? How to I undo the battery mod anyway, anyone know?

My wait time is now 359 hours...and now it will not let me advance the date any further. Why is it just a handful of us cannot even begin the download process??? Defective phones??

Gotta tone down some of this glowing review I posted earlier - now our 2 phones don't want to be so quick to lock on to satellites. I even walked outside with mine just now - it's a relatively clear and calm night in Southeast Louisiana, and I'm still only locking on to 3 or 4 satellites standing outside.
Like they say on ESPN for Monday Night Football ---
"Hey, Samsung/ATT, C'mon, Man!"
Best I can get now is 84 and 96 feet error - it puts me across the street and 2 houses down on Latitude. Just craziness and a shame that Samsung & ATT can't get this right with such a good phone otherwise.
So it looks like we're back to square one, waiting AGAIN for the ship to come in.

I downloaded and installed it about an hour ago, and the operation was a success Doctor! 
The GPS is definitely improved, I had 10/10 satellite lock inside (albeit by a window) in just under a minute, and the GPS stays locked, before it would get it, then lose it and then get it again, then start allover. I fired up Google Maps, and it had a lock in 20 seconds, MUCH improved! However, it has me located about 200 feet from my actual location, I will have to try it and Google Navigation outside tomorrow on my way into town.
