No, my phone is not rooted. I have never been able to get more than 2 satellites. Never a lock.
Tried those settings and no luck. Took a drive around the block with google nav, and just kept searching. Phone froze and wouldnt turn on for a minute but now is operating. Frustrating!

Rooted with the one click lag fix, searched for the update installed it and everyrhing worked. Going to test the gps on my way home for work but so far I seem to be getting a faster lock.

downloading the update now. I installed the voodoo lag fix but disabled it the other day. But I know that it changes the FS to EXT4 (?) so I'm hoping that wont screw up this update. we'll see
This is THE update that both AT&T and Samsung have been talking about. As with any software release, it will include many fixes and changes not included in the official changelog. I, along with many others, have validated that there are GPS improvements in this release.
For those testing GPS, make sure you have a good working 3G connection. aGPS with the default setting will use AT&T's servers to get the quickest lock. When I first attempted a GPS lock it wasn't working and I noticed I was getting the "data connection lost" messages from Google Maps. I reset my 3G connection and the next time I got a lock in less than 10 secs. You can also see it working if even if you are on Wi-Fi you see the 3G connection symbol pop up for a few seconds when you turn on GPS.
I'm not saying it's perfect and it doesn't sound like it's working for you. But don't get your hopes up of something else coming shortly, and don't believe there are no GPS improvements in this release.

Rooted with the one click lag fix. Searched for the update and downloaded it, everything installed fine and the gps seems to track faster. Going to test it on the way home from work to see how it really performs now.

Update went well for me, completely stock. GPS checks out fine. Editing docs is a big plus. Media scanner certainly appears to be a little quicker (I have over 12GB of audio files). Might be my imagination but the phone seems a little snappier in performance.

Alright, I manually updated my phone. I had a little more than 5 hours to wait before I was allowed to manually update the software, so I forwarded the phone's date 24hrs. That worked, and then I was able to update the phone.
The update did its thing...and now comes my impressions...
First, Media Scanner: It is faster. At first, when the phone restarted itself after the update, the media scanner took just as long as before. I was bumbed and annoyed. I restarted the phone again, and the effects, well, took affect. Before, my media scanner would take longer than 3 minutes without fail. Within that time I couldn't do anything, and my Fancy Widget would take minutes to load. After I restarted the phone again, it all took place in less than 20 seconds. MUCH much better, and what I expected to happen. Again, I had to manually restart the phone, after the phone restarted itself after its update.
Second, Screen Quality: I personally do not see a difference. I think some people have higher expectations with an update, and what it can or SHOULD do, thus sometimes imagining a change in something unrelated to an update. Just a thought to some previous comments on about a possible change in screen quality.
Third, actual changes: I'd be curious to know what others have noticed besides the "I think" this or that responses. For example, I physically see a design change with the YouTube widget. Anything else people actually see a difference with?
Fourth, and most likely the biggest deal for most people who own the Captivate, GPS: First, let me start off by saying my GPS was working as good as my Navigon unit. Everything from finding the satellites and locking on, to navigating. Where I DID notice a difference, and one that makes me happy since living in NYC, is being able to successfully navigate with the cell towers. Before, there would ALWAYS be a huge blue circle around the little blue arrow on Google Maps. Even with perfect 4 bar receptions! Now, the blue circle is gone. Only the little blue arrow remains, and it is accurate down to the block I'm standing on. The thing is, for me living in NYC, it's faster and easier to use wireless networks for guidance rather then GPS, and not to mention the battery consumption while using GPS. Though my GPS works, I'd prefer not to use it if I don't need to. But now, I'm very very happy and content with using the wireless networks for guidance, because of it's now improved accuracy.
Fifth, Lag: I've been running RyanZ one-click lag fix. That worked amazing amazing wonders for my entire phone, and thus I can't tell a difference because of this. I would like to hear others who were bone stock, and if they actually, truly have noticed a difference in performance. The biggest thing for me was EXCHANGE mail! Took minutes to send and minutes to receive....after RyanZ lag fix, it was instant. But this isn't about RyanZ lag fix, it's about the update. So please share your experience in this department as well! I'm sure others are really wanting to know. If I could go back to bone stock without needing a lag fix, that would be great!

I had the same problem but I figured it out using the app Anycut. After installing just insert the steps "Anycut" and then "Activity" instead of "activities".
I used GPS Test and Compass apps today, both at one point or another, had me going in the wrong direction. Unlike everyone else, I don't have aGPS on, strictly GPS. This continues to tell me that the so called improvement is not there. I don't know if Samsung is expecting us to use aGPS to truly solve the position issues this phone has. But, with that said, using strictly GPS I stood outside my office building for 5 mins and still had no lock. Got in the car and started driving, a few mins later, GPS Test started showing a lock on satellites. I'll do a driving test on the way home tonight and if that fails, will be calling the local AT&T store and asking for the manager. So far, I'm not happy with what I'm seeing.

Yeah, I found Anycut and was able to do it. I changed my GPS settings several times and I am still not having any luck with connecting to more than 1 satellite or using the Assisted feature. Maps says it can't find my location with Assisted MS enabled.
is this update a GPS fix only and if so has anybody in California recieved a message from AT&T about the update ?
If you're not happy I encourage you to go to the store and do what it takes to get your satisfaction.
That said, my understanding of how GPS works is it needs to have an idea of where you are so it can get a list of satellites to look for. If it doesn't have that list, the initial lock will take a very long time.
Perhaps try a lock with aGPS then switch it off and see what your results are?
I don't know if this hardware is even supposed to be capable of GPS but I can tell you my iPhone 3GS could never pinpoint my location closer than 1000m or so if it didn't have a wireless signal so I'm not sure what we're supposed to expect with this phone but it's already been better than my old phone.

It was never promised to us that the Samsung Captivate on AT&T (USA) would get Froyo in September... or any other month specifically. That rumor came from wishful-thinking and misreading.
All that has been said is that the Captivate will get Froyo. Not "when".
